A small, fast text editor. One executable, no runtime, no installer.

Just want the editor?

note.min.exe — 113 KB. Download it, run it. That is the whole thing.

29 languages and 17 themes are inside that file; nothing has to sit beside it.
It is UPX-compressed, which some antivirus heuristics dislike on sight — if
yours objects, note-0.1.0-windows.zip below has the uncompressed 156 KB
build, which is byte-for-byte the same editor.

The rest

The Windows binary and the 16-bit MS-DOS binary are the same file. Every PE
begins with an MZ header describing a real-mode program, and in every other
executable that program prints This program cannot be run in DOS mode and
exits. This one is an editor. So note.exe starts on MS-DOS, on Windows 95
and on Windows 11.

Windows note-0.1.0-windows.zip The 156 KB build and the packed one, plus syntax.pack — which takes the language count from 29 to 142. Also runs on MS-DOS.
MS-DOS note-0.1.0-msdos.zip DJGPP 32-bit protected mode, with all 338 themes inside it, and the 39 KB 8086 real-mode build.
Commodore 64 note-0.1.0-c64.zip cc65, 6502, 40x25.
Game Boy note-0.1.0-gameboy.zip 32 KB ROM, 40 columns on a 160x144 screen, with a tokenising BASIC.
Themes themes.pack The full catalogue, 338 palettes. Drop it beside the executable or in %LOCALAPPDATA%\note\.

Each archive carries a READ-ME.txt saying what its files are, plus LICENSE
and NOTICE.md.

What is in it

Tabs, session restore for unsaved work, line numbers, syntax highlighting, a
command palette on Ctrl+K, a key sheet on F1, and a Find backed by a Pike
VM rather than a backtracking engine, so no pattern can hang the editor. On
Windows the editing itself is done by the platform's own text control, not a
reimplementation of one.

Languages and themes are plain text in the same format the built-in defaults
are written in, converted from
tinted-theming/schemes and
micro.

The core is strict C89 with no CRT, no floating point and no assumption that
int is wider than 16 bits, which is what lets the same editor reach a
machine with 64 KB of RAM in total.

Verified

All five targets build from this tag, and the six test programs pass:
312,000-odd checks across the gap buffer, the regex engine, the syntax
registry, pack lookup, palette reduction and the Game Boy BASIC.
