Matriz 2.3.0 · Windows and web backgrounds
Matriz 2.3.0 · Windows and web backgrounds
What's new
- Matriz for Windows. Portable x64 and ARM64 packages with native WinUI 3 settings, top navigation, grouped controls and local preferences. The background uses WebView2 behind Explorer desktop icons.
- A component ready for your website. Includes
<matriz-background>, a canvas API, TypeScript types, ESM, a classic script and an example. No AI, music or visible settings: values are configured directly in code. Respects Reduce Motion, pauses when out of view and releases resources when unmounted. - The same look across all three platforms. A shared shader and a tested contract for values and limits keep waves, palettes, shadows, color noise, displacement and concavity consistent. Fixes a reserved GLSL word that prevented WebGL2 compilation.
- Desktop app integrations. Windows adds microphone-free WASAPI loopback capture, colors from artwork published by media players and local connectors for agent states. These are optional and excluded from the web package.
- Settings preserved. Existing macOS preferences are not reset. Windows keeps separate settings and preserves a backup when recovering an invalid file.
This version retains the organic color, protected highlights, particle, music and Wallpaper improvements introduced in 2.2.0.

Windows
Download the ZIP for your architecture from this release and compare its hash against SHA256SUMS:
Get-FileHash .\Matriz-Windows-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256
Expand-Archive .\Matriz-Windows-x64.zip -DestinationPath .\Matriz
.\Matriz\Matriz.exeFor ARM64, substitute the ZIP name. Keep all extracted files together. When updating, close Matriz before replacing files and preserve %LOCALAPPDATA%\Matriz. The app has no commercial signature and Windows may show SmartScreen. Requires Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
Integrate into a website
Extract Matriz-Web-2.3.0.zip, serve the folder over HTTP and open example.html. Its code shows configurable values without adding controls. For an npm project:
npm install ./matriz-background-2.3.0.tgz<section style="position:relative; min-height:500px; background:#000">
<matriz-background settings='{"palette":5,"speed":0.7,"colorBlur":0.65}'></matriz-background>
<h1 style="position:relative">Your content</h1>
</section>
<script type="module" src="./dist/matriz-background.js"></script>Validation and limitations
- Shared tests, web package installation with types and actual WebGL2 rendering passed. Checks cover independent instances, context recovery, absence of music and AI APIs on the web, and Windows adapter palettes.
- macOS, Windows x64 and ARM64 builds checked in CI; native self-test run on Windows x64. On the Mac, checks cover Metal, synthetic audio, preferences, screensaver and Wallpaper without replacing the installed app or changing its settings.
- Physical checks of the Windows desktop, audio devices and media players remain pending; ARM64 is built but has not run on ARM hardware. WorkerW is undocumented Explorer behavior and may change. Windows includes no
.scrscreensaver or animated lock screen. - macOS retains local signing without notarization and a Wallpaper extension using a private API. The physical lock/unlock cycle remains untested. Passwords and FileVault are unchanged.
Matriz 2.2.0 · Organic color, AI agents and Wallpaper
Matriz 2.2.0 · Organic color, AI agents and Wallpaper
What's new
- More organic color. The palette follows the wave relief with a more irregular distribution and a new color noise blur control.
- Better balanced light and shadows. A new control brightens deep areas, while a brightness curve reduces blown highlights and harsh bands.
- More expressive particles. Gentle drift around bright areas and gradual size-based concavity: smaller particles are more concave and larger ones are more open.
- Stronger music response. Bass and treble have more presence, affecting upper and lower waves, center-wave width, and orb size and irregularity.
- More faithful artwork colors. Extraction better preserves dominant colors, accents, pastels and tones in monochrome or grayscale covers.
- Redesigned settings. Pure black background, Liquid Glass top navigation on supported systems, grouped panels and color strips beneath hue and the active palette. Interface available in 20 languages.
- Colors that follow your agents' states. A new section for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Hermes, LM Studio and other agents: idle, running, permission, human input, error and completion. Includes local connectors, smooth transitions and priority across concurrent sessions without storing conversations.
- Wallpaper extension. Matriz appears as a selectable wallpaper in System Settings and supplies its shader to the desktop, session lock screen and screensaver. The standalone
Matriz.savermodule remains included.
Existing settings are preserved. Agent colors are optional and require connecting the corresponding hooks or client. See the English agent guide: LM Studio observes requests from the connected API client, not every chat in its app.
Requirements and compatibility
- ZIP built for Apple Silicon (arm64). On Intel, build from source.
- App and screensaver module: macOS 14+. Audio response: macOS 14.2+. Wallpaper extension: macOS 26+.
- The extension uses a private macOS API and may need adjustments after system updates. Registration and appearance in the wallpaper picker were checked on macOS 27.2; the physical lock/unlock cycle remains untested. Passwords and FileVault are unchanged.
- Music and artwork are processed in the desktop app. Agent colors can also reach the extension through connectors.
- Local signing, without Apple notarization. Remove quarantine only from the package downloaded from this release, after verifying its SHA-256.

Matriz 2.1.0
What's new in Matriz 2.1.0
GPU performance: 15.4% less time per frame
Average frame time at 1440×900: 4.62 → 3.91 ms (1.18×), measured using 46 cases × 8 interleaved passes (median per case, same reference shader):
- Waves (styles 0–5): +16.9%
- High load (deformation, DPR, extremes): +15.0%
- Orbs: +14.0% · Other: +14.4%
No visible changes: the 50-case byte-for-byte suite and deterministic harness pass. The shader is also precompiled (Matriz.metallib, with source fallback), and duplicate frames are no longer drawn.
New settings
- Wave position (lower, upper and center, up or down).
- Orb center X / center Y (filled and hollow), alongside the existing size control.
New defaults and icon
Lower wave, maximum drift, Pink palette, audio and artwork enabled — with a matching pink icon.

Matriz 2.0.0
Matriz 2.0.0 · First official release
Procedural background for macOS: waves of light, geometric sparkles and color that reacts to your music.
What's new
- Six compositions with soft moving edges: full screen, lower wave, upper wave, center wave, orb and inverse orb (scalable from 20% to 600%).
- Nine palettes and a custom four-pigment palette, with independent color variety, hue, brightness, saturation and contrast.
- Sparkles with character: stars with adjustable concavity, circles or squares; depth-based size and particle displacement from 0 to 400% without clipping shapes.
- Mac audio response (macOS 14.2+): bass, mids, treble and system output energy, without using the microphone. Audio is not recorded or sent anywhere.
- Artwork colors: automatically follows Music and Spotify, extracts up to four dominant tones in OKLab and blends palettes with interruptible transitions.
- Included screensaver that shares desktop background settings, with protection managed by macOS.
- 20 complete languages, including Arabic and Hebrew with right-to-left layouts.
- Careful performance: a single SDR pass, a 30 FPS energy-saving profile, and support for Reduce Motion and Low Power Mode.
Requirements
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Audio response requires macOS 14.2 or later.
- Apple Silicon Mac (the release is built for arm64).
