Soup Engine v0.1.0 (beta)

Choose a tag to compare

@jiijii0 jiijii0 released this 23 Oct 11:04

First public build. Thirteen film stocks, a full-screen picker on the
back of the camera, and a second JPEG beside every raw.

This is a beta, and a toy. Unofficial code on a twenty year old
body. Try it in a spirit of curiosity rather than on a wedding. It is
easy to remove, and your raw files are never modified.

Installing

  1. Install Magic Lantern and check the camera boots and their menu opens. Soup Engine never touches your camera's boot flag; that is their job.
  2. Back up their autoexec.bin from the card. Putting it back is how you undo all of this.
  3. Unzip soup-engine-v0.1.0-beta-card.zip to the root of the card, replacing AUTOEXEC.BIN.
  4. Put the card in and switch the camera on. Nothing to enable.

Press the trash button to open the picker, wheel to choose, SET to
pick. Your choice survives a power cycle.

What is in the zip

AUTOEXEC.BIN Magic Lantern's program with 215 bytes changed
SE.BIN the engine
ML/FILM/ the thirteen film stocks, as plain text

Renamed in this build: the halation stock is Soup 800, not the
name it carried when first posted. CineStill is a registered trademark
and respoolers of the same base stock use their own brand plus the
speed, so this does too. Same look, same file, new name: if you
installed an earlier copy, delete cinestill.fs and its line in
ML/FILM/INDEX.TXT.

The films

Acros, Astia, Bleach Bypass, Soup 800, Classic Chrome, Classic
Neg, Eterna, Gold, Nostalgic Neg, Portra, Provia, Reala Ace, Velvia.

They borrow their names from films because the names are useful
shorthand, not because they are exact copies. They are still being
tuned and will keep changing. Soup
Stocks
is a browser editor for
them, previewing through this engine's own code compiled to
WebAssembly, so what you see there is what the camera writes.

Known limits

  • Set your Picture Style to Standard, Neutral or Faithful. On Monochrome every look comes out black and white, because the camera hands the engine a grey picture to start from.
  • While this is installed you do not have Magic Lantern's own menu, since it replaces the file that provides it.
  • SOURCE: RAW works but takes minutes rather than seconds, and several looks cannot apply there at all, so films come out tamer and Acros is not black and white. SOURCE: JPEG is the default and the one to use.
  • About twenty seconds a frame at SIZE HALF. You can keep shooting while it works.

Removing it

Put Magic Lantern's original autoexec.bin back. To pause without
uninstalling, delete SE.BIN. Do not delete AUTOEXEC.BIN while the
boot flag is set
or the camera will not start at all.
