Releases: jimblom/Hexfield-Deck
Release list
v1.1.0-rc.1 — Tags as sole organizational label
What's changed
- Projects removed — tags promoted — The
[project-name]bracket syntax is gone. Tags (#tag) are now the sole organizational label. - Per-tag color configuration with border/fill style, driven by a user-defined priority list for cards with multiple tags.
- Legacy
[bracket]tokens in existing files are silently stripped from rendered titles — no file migration required.
Installing via BRAT
Add jimblom/Hexfield-Deck as a beta plugin in BRAT and it will pick up this pre-release.
v1.0.0-rc — Obsidian plugin + v1.0.0 candidate
Release Candidate: v1.0.0
This is the release candidate for v1.0.0, which ships the full Obsidian plugin alongside the VS Code extension.
What's new
- Obsidian plugin — Full feature parity with VS Code: drag-and-drop, native context menus, filters, search, quick add, jump-to-source, sub-task checkboxes, project color config, wikilink rendering
- Native context menus — Right-click any card in Obsidian for the full context menu (priority, state, move, edit, delete) using Obsidian's native Menu API with checkmarks on current values
- Tag pill badges — `#tags` render as oval pill badges (separate row, purple); `[project]` bracket syntax is the distinct project identifier
- "All Slates" view — Combine all H1 slates into one board view
- Optional H2 headings — Tasks under an H1 with no preceding H2 fall into an implicit default row

v0.8.0 — The Board Comes Alive
Hexfield Deck v0.8.0 is the most polished release yet — and the last stop before v1.0.0 hits the VS Code Marketplace. This one is less about adding surfaces and more about making every surface feel like it belongs in your editor.
What's new
The board talks back to your files
Click any card to jump to its source line. The editor opens, cursor lands on the task, view centers. No hunting through the file. This is the feature that closes the loop between the board and the markdown — the thing that makes it feel native instead of bolted on.
Your day, front and center
Today's swimlane row auto-expands on load. Everything else collapses out of the way. Open your weekly planner and you're already looking at today — not scrolling through Monday to get to Thursday.
Overdue work is impossible to miss
Cards with past due dates now show a red top border in addition to the existing date badge. You'll know at a glance what's slipped, even in a dense board.
Comments surface where they belong
The // comment syntax has been parsed since v0.7.0, but the text was silently discarded on the board. Now it shows up as a small italic note beneath the card title — your annotations are finally visible without opening the file.
Find anything, instantly
A search bar in the toolbar filters cards by title substring in real time. Works alongside the existing metadata filters. Great for boards with a lot of cards where you know what you're looking for.
Know where you stand
The header now shows Slate progress — 7 / 23 done with a progress bar. Won't Do and Blocked cards don't count against you. A quick read of the header tells you how the week is tracking.
Column counts in Standard view
Each column header in Standard view now shows a card count badge. Small thing, genuinely useful.
Status bar integration
While a board is open, the VS Code status bar shows the active filename (tasks.md — Hexfield Deck). A small signal that the extension is alive and which file it's watching.
Empty states
Two cases that previously showed a blank void now show helpful prompts: one when a Slate genuinely has no tasks, one when active filters are hiding everything (with a "clear all filters" link).
Bug fix
- Swimlane grid with Blocked / Won't Do columns — The CSS grid template was hardcoded to 3 columns. Boards with Blocked or Won't Do cards had broken layouts. Now computed dynamically from the actual column count.
What's next
v1.0.0 — VS Code Marketplace submission. The icon is the last open item. Everything else is ready.
Named after the Hexfield Viewscreen on the Satellite of Love — your window into the work.
v0.6.1 — ProjectPanel bug fixes
Patch release fixing two bugs in the project color panel introduced in v0.6.0.
Fixed
-
Project clear button (✕) — Clicking ✕ now correctly clears the color and style, retaining only the URL if one was set. Previously the button had no effect due to a spread bug that re-wrote the unchanged config.
-
Project URL input — URL values now save reliably. Previously, clicking outside the panel closed it before the
blurevent fired, silently discarding any typed URL.
Full changelog
See CHANGELOG.md for the complete history.
v0.6.0 — Project color panel + Hexfield Text compatibility
What's new
Project Color Selector Panel
New Projects button in the board toolbar (left of Filter). Opens a popover listing every #project tag discovered in the active file — no more editing settings JSON to configure project colors.
Per-project controls:
- Color dot → 12-swatch curated palette + native color wheel for custom hex + clear button
- Style dropdown — Border (3px left stripe), Fill (~10% opacity background tint), or Both
- URL input — makes the project badge a clickable link
Changes persist to hexfield-deck.projects in global VS Code settings immediately, with optimistic UI update for instant feedback.
Configurable Badge Colors
All metadata badge colors (project tags, priorities, due dates, time estimates) now read from hexfield.colors.* VS Code settings with hardcoded fallback defaults. Colors stay in sync with Hexfield Text when both extensions are installed.
Hexfield Text Compatibility
Hexfield Deck now accepts hexfield-markdown files promoted by the Hexfield Text companion extension — context menu entries and the openBoard command guard both recognize the new language ID. hexfield.colors.* configuration ownership moved to Hexfield Text (ADR-0007), eliminating "already registered" warnings when both extensions are installed.
type: hexfield-planner Frontmatter
Documented as the canonical file identity field for the Hexfield product family. Present in all examples, USER_GUIDE, and the week template generator.
Hexfield Ecosystem Spec
docs/hexfield-ecosystem.md — the integration reference documenting shared contracts between Hexfield extensions: file identity, language ID, configuration namespace ownership, CSS variables, and the shared color palette.
Fixed
- Project clear button (✕) — now correctly clears color and style, retaining only the URL if set
- Project URL input — URL values now save reliably regardless of how the panel is closed
Full changelog
See CHANGELOG.md for the complete history.
v0.5.0 — Metadata Filtering
What's New
Metadata Filtering
Filter the board down to exactly the cards you need. The new [Filter ▾] button in the toolbar opens a multi-section dropdown:
| Dimension | Options |
|---|---|
| Project | Multi-select from all projects active in the current file |
| Status | To Do / In Progress / Done |
| Priority | High / Medium / Low |
| Due Date | Overdue / Due Today / Due This Week / No Due Date |
| Time Estimate | Short (≤30m) / Medium (30m–2h) / Long (2h+) / No Estimate |
- AND logic between dimensions, OR logic within each dimension
- Active filter count shown as a badge on the Filter button
- Filters persist when switching between Standard, Swimlane, and Backlog views
- "Clear all filters" button restores the full board instantly
Upgrade Notes
No breaking changes. Open any existing planner file — filtering is off by default and the board behaves identically until you engage it.
What's Next
Phase 8: Week Navigation — Browse forward and backward through weeks directly from the board, with auto-creation of new week files from a configurable template.
v0.4.0 - Inline Markdown Rendering
Phase 6: Inline Markdown Rendering
Card titles and sub-task titles now render inline markdown formatting across all three views — Standard, Swimlane, and Backlog.
What's New
- Bold, italic,
strikethrough, and`code spans`render directly on cards - Markdown links
[text](url)open in your default browser - Sub-task titles support the same inline formatting
- Clicking a link on a card or sub-task does not trigger drag-and-drop
- Columns are now equal-width thirds regardless of content length
- Long titles and rendered links wrap cleanly within cards
Bug Fixes
#fragmentin a URL (e.g.https://example.com/page#section) is no longer mistakenly extracted as a project tag — project tags require a space before#- Sub-task titles with markdown links now render correctly instead of showing raw markdown
Usage
Write standard inline markdown in any task or sub-task title:
- [ ] Ship **v0.4.0** release #hexfield [2026-02-15] !!!

v0.4.0-rc.1 — Phase 6: Inline Markdown Rendering
Phase 6: Inline Markdown Rendering (RC)

- Drag-and-drop is preserved — clicking a link in a card does not trigger a drag
- All three views (Standard, Swimlane, Backlog) updated
Notes
