Flint is a Mac and Windows app: drag files in, click once, get web-ready video, audio,
images and documents. Everything runs locally on a bundled FFmpeg - nothing is uploaded.

Download the right one

Your Mac File
Apple Silicon, macOS 12+ ...-macOS-arm64.dmg
Intel, macOS 11+ ...-macOS-x64.dmg

Apple menu > About This Mac tells you which you have ("Chip" = Apple Silicon,
"Processor" = Intel). The other architecture's file will not launch, so it is worth a look.
The .app.zip files are the same app without the disk image, for anyone who prefers that.

Windows x64: download Flint-1.0.0-Windows-x64.exe.
There is no Linux installer. Windows FFmpeg source and license evidence are included.

The bundled FFmpeg, and which licence covers your download

Flint ships ffmpeg and ffprobe inside the app. They are not ours and
they are not MIT: they are GPL, and the two architectures are under different
GPL versions, because the two community publishers configure their builds differently.
Find the file you downloaded:

Your download FFmpeg version Licence Licence text Corresponding source
...-macOS-arm64.dmg / .app.zip 7.1.1 GPL-2.0-or-later GPL-2.0.txt ffmpeg-7.1.1-source-for-macOS-arm64.tar.xz
...-macOS-x64.dmg / .app.zip 9.0.2-tessus GPL-3.0-or-later GPL-3.0.txt ffmpeg-9.0.2-source-for-macOS-x64.tar.xz

Every file named in that table is attached to this release, and the same texts ride
inside the app at Flint.app/Contents/Resources/licenses/ (right-click the
app > Show Package Contents) together with FFMPEG-BUILD.txt and WRITTEN-OFFER.txt.

You do not have to take our word for which one you have - ask the binary you were given:

"/Applications/Flint.app/Contents/MacOS/ffmpeg" -version

--enable-version3 in the configuration: line means your copy is GPL-3.0-or-later;
--enable-gpl without it means GPL-2.0-or-later. The exact lines this release was built
from:

Source code, and where our position is imperfect

WRITTEN-OFFER.txt (attached) is our written offer under GPL-2.0 section 3(b) /
GPL-3.0 section 6(b), valid for at least three years, with the contact route on it.
Plainly, so you can judge it yourself: we did not compile these binaries. They are
community builds (osxexperts.net for Apple Silicon, evermeet.cx for Intel). What is
attached is the upstream FFmpeg source for exactly the version each binary reports,
plus that publisher's complete configure line above, which is what makes the build
reproducible in principle. If a publisher patched their tree on top of upstream, we do
not hold those patches and we do not claim the tarball builds bit-for-bit into the
binary you got. If you find a discrepancy, open an issue - that is a compliance bug and
we will fix it by building FFmpeg ourselves rather than leaving it standing.

Flint's own code is proprietary, with all rights reserved. It runs FFmpeg as a separate process and
never links it, so the GPL covers the bundled binaries, not the app around them.

First launch: macOS will refuse, once

This app is not code-signed and not notarized (that needs a paid Apple Developer
account, which this project does not have). macOS therefore blocks the first launch:

"Flint" Not Opened
Apple could not verify "Flint" is free of malware that may harm your Mac
or compromise your privacy.

To get past it:

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Flint into your Applications folder.
  2. Double-click it. The message above appears - click Done. Do not click
    Move to Trash.
  3. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security. There is a
line saying Flint was blocked, with an Open Anyway button. Click it,
then confirm with Touch ID or your password.
  4. One more dialog appears - click Open Anyway. From then on the app opens normally.

On macOS 14 Sonoma and older you can instead right-click the app and choose Open. That
shortcut was removed in macOS 15 Sequoia, so the steps above are the reliable route.

Same thing from Terminal, if you prefer:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Flint.app"

That last command also fixes the rarer case where the app opens but every conversion fails
immediately: the bundled ffmpeg was still quarantined.

Verify your download

SHA256SUMS.txt is attached and covers every asset here - the disk images, the zipped
apps, the FFmpeg source archives and the licence files. In Terminal, in your Downloads
folder:

shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt --ignore-missing

Build it yourself instead

Clone the repository and double-click Build.command. FFmpeg is downloaded by
scripts/fetch-sidecars.sh on first build; a locally built app is not quarantined, so
none of the Gatekeeper steps above apply.
