WoodyRE v1.0.8
WoodyRE 1.0.8
New in 1.0.8: Graphics options
- Options has a new Graphics page with four extras the original game does not have. All are off by default, so the game looks exactly as before until you change something. Changes apply at once when you choose Continue, also from the pause menu in a level, and are saved in woodyre.cfg.
- Ambient occlusion: soft shadows in corners and where objects meet the ground.
- Texture sharpness: Original, 2x, 4x, 8x or 16x anisotropic filtering. Floors and walls seen at a shallow angle stay sharp further away.
- Edge smoothing: Off, Low, Medium, High or Ultra (SMAA). Smooths jagged edges, including leaves and fences.
- Multisampling: Off, 2x, 4x or 8x (MSAA). Smooths polygon edges, and can be combined with edge smoothing.
- The HUD, menus and text are never smoothed or darkened, and the new menu texts are translated for the Polish, Spanish, Brazilian and Russian CDs.
- Available on Windows and Linux, and on Android and Switch with OpenGL ES 3.0 or newer (nearly every phone from the last years). A setting your device cannot do shows "Not supported".
- The cost is small on a desktop GPU (well under 1 ms per frame with everything on). On phones and the Switch, start with one option at a time; reports on how it runs there are welcome.
- Edge smoothing uses SMAA by Jorge Jimenez et al. (MIT licence).
Windows: unzip, start WoodyRE.exe and point it to your Woody Woodpecker CD (or a mounted ISO image of it). Linux / Steam Deck: unpack the .tar.gz and start woodyre (needs SDL2). Android: install the .apk and choose your ISO image or a copy of the CD at the first start. Switch (homebrew, experimental): unpack the -switch.zip onto the SD card and put your ISO image into /switch/woodyre/. The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.7
WoodyRE 1.0.7
New in 1.0.7: Nintendo Switch (homebrew, experimental)
- WoodyRE now runs on a Nintendo Switch that can run homebrew (custom firmware such as Atmosphere). Unpack WoodyRE-v1.0.7-switch.zip onto the SD card, which puts woodyre.nro in /switch/woodyre/.
- Game files: put an ISO image of your CD into /switch/woodyre/. The first start unpacks it into /switch/woodyre/data (a few minutes, once), then asks you to press + and start WoodyRE again; the ISO can be deleted afterwards. Copying Data, Common, Logo, Game and Music.bf into /switch/woodyre/data yourself works too.
- Controls follow the button labels: A jumps and confirms, B ducks and goes back, X attacks, Y is the special attack. Joy-Cons (attached or as a pair) and the Pro Controller work, with rumble; the Controls page shows the Nintendo button names.
- Tested in an emulator so far, not yet on a real Switch: reports from real hardware (speed, anything odd; woodyre.log is in /switch/woodyre) are very welcome. Starting it by holding R on a game is recommended over the Album, which has less memory.
- Other builds: a Switch Pro Controller on Linux now shows Nintendo button names as well. No other changes.
WoodyRE v1.0.6
WoodyRE 1.0.6
New in 1.0.6: Linux fix for unpacked ISO images
- Linux: the game no longer stops after the logo films when the game files were unpacked from the ISO with a tool that keeps the CD's trailing dots (Data/House/code. instead of Data/House/code). Those names are now found as they are, so there is no need to rename anything.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.5
WoodyRE 1.0.5
New in 1.0.5: camera speed
- Options, Controls has a new "Camera speed" setting (25 % to 200 %, default 100 %) for turning and raising the camera with the right stick. A slower camera is gentler if fast camera movement makes you feel sick.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.4
WoodyRE 1.0.4
New in 1.0.4: translated menus and a turnable camera
- The port's own menus (Display, Controls and the key names) are now in the CD's language: Polish, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese or Russian, with the game's own accented and Cyrillic letters.
- The right stick of a controller now turns the camera around Woody (left/right) and lowers or raises it (up/down). It stops at walls like the normal camera, and "camera behind" (L1/LB) brings it back. It does nothing in side-view sections, cinematics and other scripted camera shots. Hold R1/RB for the first-person look as before.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.3
WoodyRE 1.0.3
New in 1.0.3: more languages
- Supports the Brazilian Portuguese ("Pica-Pau: A Fuga do Parque do Zeca Urubu!"), Polish ("Wielka Draka w Parku Buzza Buzzarda"), Spanish and Russian (1C) CDs, besides the English 1.00 CD. The game is in the CD's language.
- The Brazilian, Polish and Russian CDs carry a later version of the game data (February 2002) with a few level fixes; WoodyRE plays them as they are.
- WoodyRE.exe --verify now names the CD your copy comes from (in woodyre.log).
- The port's own menu texts (Display, Controls) show every letter in every language, e.g. "Duck: X" on the Brazilian and Polish CDs.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.2
WoodyRE 1.0.2
New in 1.0.2: runs on older processors again
- Fixed a crash right at startup ("illegal instruction", 0xc000001d in woodyre.log) on PCs with an older processor. The Windows exe was accidentally built for new CPUs only (AVX2/AVX-512); it now runs on any 64-bit x86 processor. Nothing else changes in the game.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.1
WoodyRE 1.0.1
New in 1.0.1: enemies, bombs and shooters fixed to match the original
- S1A (Splinter, Space part A): the chicks in the push-block room no longer lie flat on the floor before they wake up. They stand still until you walk in, as in the original.
- S2A, W2A and K2A: the bomb from the peck trigger at the end of the level now falls out of the cannon's mouth and bounces forward off the cannon, as in the original, instead of dropping straight down and rolling to the cannon's foot. Bombs also keep their forward speed correctly when they bounce.
- S1R (Splinter's space race): the flying saucers that shoot at you are now visible for the whole race; from the second saucer on only their shots could be seen.
- Turrets and other shooters only fire while they are in view, and no longer fire an extra shot right at the start of a level, as in the original.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v1.0.0
WoodyRE 1.0.0
New in 1.0.0: Android, and the last differences from the original fixed
- Android: WoodyRE-v1.0.0.apk runs on 64-bit phones and tablets with Android 7.0 or later. At the first start it copies the game files from the CD image (ISO) or folder you pick, with every file checked. Touch controls on screen; a Bluetooth or USB pad works too. Install the APK by hand (sideloading); later versions install over it and keep your saves.
- Saving works like the original again: only "Yes" on "Do you want to save?" writes your progress. Earlier versions also saved after every level when you answered "No".
- The save page has its empty line back, and the "overwrite?" question starts on "No".
- W3C: the platforms that drop away under Woody now carry and drop him exactly as in the original.
- Objects that should start a second animation after the first (in S1R, S3R, K3A, S3A and W3A) no longer freeze.
- The end of a cinematic resets Woody like the original does.
- The thunder of the lightning in the storm levels could read freed memory; fixed.
- Safer saving: woodyre.sav is written to a new file first and then swapped in, so a crash or power cut cannot damage it.
- WoodyRE.exe in Program Files or started from inside the zip keeps its settings, saves and log in %LOCALAPPDATA%\WoodyRE.
- Keys no longer stay pressed when you switch to another window.
- Damaged or crafted game files, saves and settings no longer crash the game.
The game files are not included - see README.md.
WoodyRE v0.9.5
New in 0.9.5: fixes
- Peck climbing: an air peck that hit a climb wall just below its top could make Woody climb over in mid-air and drop to the floor below - in a side section straight into the pit. The grab now works like the original: during the air dash the beak sticks in the wall for a moment, then he climbs and goes over the top onto the wall.
- An air peck into an object that is not a climb wall now bounces Woody off it, as in the original.
- W2B boss lift: the lift no longer throws big dark shadow triangles on the walls and ceiling during the boss cinematic. Like the original, no shadow is cast when the light sits inside the object's box.
- Character selection: the bonus arcade cabinet now stands correctly on its black circle from the start, not only after it has been selected.
Windows: unzip, start WoodyRE.exe and point it to your Woody Woodpecker CD (or a mounted ISO image of it). Linux / Steam Deck: unpack the .tar.gz and start woodyre (needs SDL2). The game files are not included - see README.md.
