v0.3.0-alpha — saver-only mode

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@jpettitt jpettitt released this 06 Sep 03:57

What's new

  • Saver-only mode — keep your own desktop wallpaper and run just the screensaver: turn off Settings → Map → "Show map on the desktop". The app renders hourly while the saver is idle and at your configured cadence while it runs (it watches the system's screensaver start/stop notifications and refreshes immediately when the saver kicks in).
  • "Install screensaver…" button (Settings → Map) — sets up frame publishing, then opens the download page, so frames are ready before the saver first runs.
  • Instant re-render on display hot-plug — a replugged monitor gets its map within seconds instead of waiting for the next refresh tick.

Internal

  • Mac App Store groundwork: Release-MAS build configuration whose entitlements replace the /Users/Shared exception with user-granted folder access (security-scoped bookmark), plus scripts/release-mas.sh to produce the store .pkg. Store submission itself still pending.

Both GeoClockWallpaper.app and GeoClockSaver.saver are signed and notarized. Requires macOS 13+.

v0.2.0-alpha — GeoClock screensaver

@jpettitt jpettitt released this 08 Aug 14:47

Alpha caveat: config schema and persisted-settings layout are still settling. Settings migrate forward automatically, but expect breaking changes between alpha versions.

What's new

  • GeoClock screensaver — the new GeoClockSaver.saver turns the same live map into your screensaver: each display shows its own rendered frame (your aspect-fit and per-display settings respected) under the identical clock/marker overlay, ticking live at 1 Hz. Fully offline — no web engine in the saver; it composites frames the app publishes to /Users/Shared/GeoClockWallpaper (Settings → Map → "Publish frames for the GeoClock screensaver", on by default; the app must run at least once).

    Install: unzip GeoClockSaver.saver.zip, double-click the .saver (or copy it to ~/Library/Screen Savers/), then pick GeoClock under System Settings → Screen Saver → Other.

    Known cosmetic limitation: the saver-selector grid shows a generic tile on macOS Sonoma and later (true of all third-party legacy savers); the preview and the running saver show the real map.

  • Version reporting fixed durably — the v0.1.1-alpha Info.plist fix could be silently reverted by project regeneration; version keys are now pinned in project.yml. This build correctly reports 0.2.0-alpha.

Files

  • GeoClockWallpaper.zip — the menu-bar wallpaper app (signed + notarized)

Alpha caveat: config schema and persisted-settings layout are still settling. Codable migrations carry 0.1.0-alpha settings forward, but expect breaking changes between alpha versions.

What's new

  • Multi-monitor support — each display renders at its native resolution with per-display configuration (center, markers, aspect mode) from the menu-bar Settings.
  • Bundled card updated to v0.2.10 (was a v0.2.3-beta snapshot) — picks up the ultrawide/letterbox rendering fixes (night mask, twilight glow, and zone overlays now wrap-tile across the seam), day/night marker colors, the WebKit mask-clip workaround, and the v0.2.10 robustness fixes. Also restores the shared geoclock-config.js module the current wallpaper page imports.
  • Correct version reporting — the app previously reported "1.0" in Finder/Get Info regardless of release; versions now flow from the project config (this build: 0.1.1-alpha, build 2).

Internal

  • Unit-test target (projection + solar math, settings migrations); the release script refuses to ship on test failure.
  • Render-chain single-flight and perf fixes from the audit pass.

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple — launches with no Gatekeeper warning.

v0.1.0-alpha — initial public release

@jpettitt jpettitt released this 13 May 20:30

First signed + notarized public build of GeoClockWallpaper, the macOS desktop companion to geo-clock-card.

What's new

  • Live desktop wallpaper — day/night terminator rendered by the same wallpaper.html the Lovelace card serves, refreshed on a user-set interval (default 5 min). Painted into per-screen overlay windows so the projection math and the rendered image share a coordinate space.
  • Markers by place name — type "Tokyo, Japan" and the app forward-geocodes lat/lon + IANA timezone in one round-trip. Each marker shows its local time + abbreviated weekday.
  • Day / night-aware fills — markers (and the home dot) flip colours as the terminator crosses their location. Global day + night defaults plus per-marker overrides.
  • Home marker — pinned to your Core Location fix (with the IANA-tz centroid as a coarse fallback when location auth is denied). Editable label, day/night colours, show-name / show-time / show-date toggles.
  • Aspect-fit modes — stretch, letterbox, or crop-overflow. The Swift overlay and rendered image agree pixel-perfect under all three.
  • Login Item integration — registers via SMAppService on first launch (default on; toggle in Settings → Schedule).
  • Sandboxed, offline-first (geoclock-app:// scheme serves the bundled card + imagery; no network at render time once the app launches), universal binary (Intel + Apple Silicon), GPL-3.0-or-later.

Install

Download GeoClockWallpaper.zip below, unzip, and drag GeoClockWallpaper.app into /Applications. macOS 13.0 or later.

Signed (Developer ID Application: John Pettitt (7QWPRXJ3WW)) and notarized — Gatekeeper accepts it on first launch with no extra steps.

Known limitations

  • Schema for persisted markers is still in flux; expect to lose some saved fields when alpha-bumping.
  • No automatic update channel yet — check this page for new releases.
  • Multi-monitor support is best-effort; the wallpaper renders at one aspect and macOS slices/letterboxes per display.
