Opensidian 0.9.1

Canvas is complete: selection, arranging, navigation, menus, edges, touch, drag and drop, PNG export and every file type on the board, and a 500-card board now pans smoothly. Built from d327325, tested on Fedora 44, Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04 (slim AppImage, portable AppImage, Flatpak, RPM, DEB and a source build: 15 of 15 cells pass).

New: Canvas

Select, move and resize

  • Drag on empty board to draw a selection box, Ctrl/Cmd+A selects everything, Shift-click adds or removes a card.
  • Resize a card from any edge or corner. Moving a group carries the cards inside it, and cards snap to each other while you drag.
  • A toolbar above the selection sets the colour of the selected cards.

Arrange

  • One command tidies a messy selection: align, distribute, arrange in a row, column or grid, and justify.

Move around a big board

  • Shift or Space with the wheel or a drag pans, and you can zoom to fit, zoom to the selection or reset the zoom.
  • Jump straight to a group, open a help panel with the shortcuts, and see a grid that scales with the zoom.
  • A settings menu on the board, including read-only mode.

Menus for everything

  • Card and board context menus: convert a text card to a file, swap the file of a file card, narrow a note card to a heading, groups and backgrounds.
  • Add a card from the vault or from a URL, use the toolbar at the bottom of the board, or drag a note in from the file explorer.

Edges

  • Draw a connection by dragging from the handle on a card's side to another card.
  • Select, delete or reconnect an edge, give it a label, a direction and a colour, and follow a connection to the card on the other end.

Touch

  • One finger pans, two fingers pinch-zoom, a long press opens the card or board menu, and a tap selects and shows the selection toolbar.

Drag and drop

  • A folder dragged from the file explorer becomes one file card per file, laid out in a grid.
  • Files dropped from other applications are copied into the vault and placed where you dropped them.
  • Drag a bookmark from the bookmarks pane onto a board to add it as a card.

Export to PNG

  • Save the whole board or the current view, at a zoom you choose, with the pixel size shown before you export. You can hide all text. An empty canvas cannot be exported.

Every kind of file

  • PDFs and canvases inside a canvas show as previews.
  • Text cards edit with the note editor, and link cards have their own menu.
  • Renaming a note keeps the file cards that point to it working.
  • A malformed .canvas file can still be opened and looked at.
  • A new canvas is one click away from an empty workspace.

Speed

  • A 500-card, 800-edge board opens and pans within the frame budget: cards off screen are not drawn, and dragging a card only redraws the edges attached to it.

Also new

  • Drag a tab into the bookmarks pane to bookmark its note.
  • A canvas no longer opens a local graph: the local graph is for notes only.

Fixed

  • Resizing a card from its left or top edge, and a group from its border, works again. The connection handles no longer take over the edge.
  • The vault picker builds its list of recent vaults in one step instead of showing a half-filled list.
  • Dates with an out-of-range year no longer overflow while being formatted. Found by the new fuzz tests. (#22)

Testing

  • Fuzz tests (five targets) run on every pull request and for 30 minutes per target each week.
