Trial accounts, so you can try StreamCut without setting up any addons. Also Nuvio 0.1.27-alpha underneath, and a smaller Mac download.

What changed

  • Trial accounts. A trial account comes with its addons already installed: sign in and search, play and clip right away, with nothing to configure. Those addons are not listed under Addons (the page says how many came with the account), and you can still add your own. A trial runs for a set time; when it ends, the app signs out and says so. While a trial is active, the account reports what it is used for (app opens, titles played, clips exported). Regular accounts report nothing.
  • Nuvio 0.1.27-alpha is now the base, with its fixes and translations.
  • Smaller Mac app. The Mac build ships only its own TorrServer and only the icons it draws.

Installing

Windows: StreamCut-Windows-x64-0.3.7-alpha.msi. Installs over 0.3.2 or later. Not signed, so SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. ffmpeg is included.

Mac (Apple Silicon): StreamCut-macOS-arm64-0.3.7-alpha.dmg. Ad-hoc signed and not notarized, so macOS blocks the first launch. Press Open Anyway under System Settings → Privacy & Security, or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/StreamCut.app. ffmpeg is included. No Intel build.

If you're on 0.3.2 or later, the app offers this update itself.

An MCP server, so an AI assistant can find and cut clips for you. Also everything from 0.3.5-alpha, which was never published.

What changed

  • MCP server (new). StreamCut can now be driven by an AI assistant: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, or any other MCP client. One message with half-remembered quotes is enough: it finds each film in your addons, finds where the line is spoken, picks a source, trims to the shot and saves the MP4s to your Clips library. It can:

    • search your catalog addons and list the sources for a film or episode;
    • find a line by its dialogue, even misquoted, and re-time it against the stream being cut (a subtitle file can sit most of a minute away from a given stream);
    • look at the picture, as single frames or a contact sheet, for moments nobody speaks in;
    • detect shot cuts, so a clip starts and ends on one;
    • cut the clip, with a choice of audio track, burned-in subtitles, aspect crop and size cap;
    • list, rename and delete clips, and open a title in the player at a range.

It is off by default. Turn it on at the end of Settings → Clips and press Copy setup command. It listens on localhost only and needs a token. Claude Desktop reaches it through the app's own launcher (--mcp-stdio), which starts StreamCut when a tool is called.

  • The cut is the loudest thing in the player. The clip row and its actions now lead the screen, playback controls step back, panels float over the picture instead of shrinking it, and the header clears the macOS window buttons.

  • Set-aside ranges are one button and a list with a still for each range.

  • Signing out no longer deletes your clips or the app's staged ffmpeg.

  • Clips page polish: visible keyboard focus, a clearer "no match" state, and the states that were missing along the way from player to library.

MCP limits for now

  • Desktop only.
  • Direct streams only: torrent-only sources and plugin scrapers are not reachable yet.
  • Clips up to 10 minutes.
  • Tested with Claude Code and Claude Desktop. Other MCP clients should work; reports welcome.

Known rough edges

  • Alpha software. Stored data and file layout may still change between releases.
  • The Mac and Windows builds are tested on one machine each; please report what breaks.
  • The MCP server has only been run on macOS so far.
  • The clipper labels (home, player, clip settings, license entries) are English only.

Save as for clip exports, exact frame stepping, and a tidier player.

What changed

  • Save as. Export (X) still writes to your clips folder. Save as (Shift+X, or the caret next to Export) lets you name the clips and pick the folder: one name for the batch, numbered in film order, any clip renamable on its own, and your last four folders one click away. A name that's taken keeps both files.
  • Frame stepping lands on the exact frame. , and . used to snap to the nearest keyframe, so . often didn't move at all. They now step one frame at a time.
  • Scrub-bar hover preview works across the whole film. It used to show only a handful of stills until you had opened Scenes once.
  • Current time under the playhead. The zoom track shows where you are (to a tenth of a second) right where you're trimming.
  • Cleaner player. The Clips button moved to the top left, and export status now sits above the IN/OUT row, so nothing comes between the clip row and the progress bar. Each clip-row button shows its key (I, O, R, A, X).
  • Removed: picture-in-picture, and changing volume with the scroll wheel (it fought every list that scrolls). Scrolling over the progress bar still seeks; volume stays on the arrow keys and the slider.
  • Clip cards show the film, the file name and where in the film each clip was cut.
  • Remove a film from Recently opened with the × on its poster.
  • Reopening a film goes straight to the source it last played instead of the source list.
  • macOS volume changes apply immediately instead of about two seconds late.

Clipping now works out of the box on a clean Mac, and StreamCut picks up everything from Nuvio Desktop 0.1.25.

What changed

  • ffmpeg is bundled on macOS. Earlier Mac builds shipped without the ffmpeg command-line tool, so clip export only worked if you had installed a suitable ffmpeg yourself. The DMG now carries a jellyfin-ffmpeg build with subtitle burn-in (libass) and HDR tonemapping (zimg), like the Windows installer already did. Nothing to install on either platform.
  • Based on Nuvio Desktop 0.1.25 (was 0.1.20). Brings upstream's player fixes, the reworked sidecar subtitles, parallel subtitle fetching, volume boost, mouse-wheel fine seek, playback speed (hold Space for 2x, Shift+, / . to change speed), the macOS full-window title bar and a new top-bar navigation (the sidebar is still available under Appearance).
  • The clip keys (I, O, /, A, B) keep priority over upstream's new single-key player shortcuts.

@julianbou julianbou released this 23 Sep 06:32

StreamCut now lives side by side with Nuvio, updates itself, and has its own privacy policy.

⚠️ Windows: uninstall 0.3.1 first

The 0.3.1 installer shared its Windows Installer upgrade code with Nuvio Desktop, so installing
either app silently removed the other. 0.3.2 has its own code, which means Windows sees it as a
different product and will not replace 0.3.1. Uninstall StreamCut 0.3.1 from Settings → Apps
before installing 0.3.2. Your settings are kept. From 0.3.2 on, updates install over the top.

What changed

  • StreamCut keeps its own data. Settings, library and sign-in used to live in Nuvio's data
folder, so with both apps installed they shared addons and a sign-in, and signing out of one
wiped the other. StreamCut now uses its own folder (Application Support/StreamCut on Mac,
%APPDATA%\StreamCut on Windows). On first launch it copies your settings over from the old
folder and leaves that folder alone. Clips you already exported stay where they are and keep
    working.
  • In-app updates. StreamCut checks this repository for new releases and offers to download
them. Earlier versions had updates switched off, so this is the last release you install by hand.
  • Privacy policy. Settings now links StreamCut's own
    privacy policy instead of Nuvio's.
  • Licenses page lists what the desktop app ships: StreamCut and Nuvio Desktop (GPL-3.0),
mpv, FFmpeg (the GPL build bundled on Windows) and TorrServer.
  • About credits the Nuvio Desktop release StreamCut is based on (0.1.20-alpha) instead of
    StreamCut's own version number.

Installing

Windows: StreamCut-Windows-x64-0.3.2-alpha.msi. Not signed, so SmartScreen shows "Windows
protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. ffmpeg is included.

Mac (Apple Silicon): StreamCut-macOS-arm64-0.3.2-alpha.dmg. Ad-hoc signed and not notarized,
so macOS blocks the first launch. Press Open Anyway under System Settings → Privacy &

StreamCut now runs on Windows. This release adds a Windows installer next to the Mac DMG; the app
itself is the same as 0.3.0-alpha.

Windows

  • StreamCut-Windows-x64-0.3.1-alpha.msi, for 64-bit Windows. The player needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime, which
    Windows 11 already has.
  • ffmpeg is included, so clipping works without installing anything. It is a full build: it
burns in subtitles (libass), tonemaps HDR (zimg) and uses your GPU's encoder when there is one
(NVENC, Quick Sync or AMF). Settings → Clips → Export tools shows which ffmpeg is in use.
  • The bundled ffmpeg is BtbN's GPL build 8.1.3, shipped
unmodified under the GPL; its source is at ffmpeg.org.
    NUVIO_FFMPEG_PATH still overrides it.

The installer is not signed, so Windows SmartScreen will stop it with "Windows protected your
PC". Click More info, then Run anyway.

Mac

Nothing changed for Mac apart from the version number. The DMG is ad-hoc signed and not
notarized
, so macOS blocks it on first launch. Pick one:

  • Open StreamCut, let macOS block it, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and press
    Open Anyway. Once is enough.
  • Or, in a terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/StreamCut.app

Apple Silicon only; no Intel DMG. The bundle's CFBundleShortVersionString reads 1.3.1 because
jpackage refuses a major version of 0; the tag and filenames carry the real version.

On Windows, compare against (Get-FileHash .\StreamCut-Windows-x64-0.3.1-alpha.msi).Hash.

Self-hosted backends

0.3.0-alpha listed three RPCs (register_current_device, sync_get_library_delta_cursor,
get_my_member_access) that older Supabase schemas lack. They are now in supabase/schema.sql;
for an existing project, run supabase/patch-library-delta-devices-membership.sql once.

Known rough edges

  • Alpha software. Stored data and file layout may change between releases without a migration.
  • Windows is new: it has been installed and used on one PC, not tested widely. Please report what
    breaks.
  • The clipper labels (home, player, clip settings) are English only; other languages show a mix.
  • On Mac, the data directory is still ~/Library/Application Support/Nuvio, shared with upstream
Nuvio Desktop if you run both.
  • iOS and Android targets are unverified in this fork.

StreamCut gets a look of its own and a home built for finding a film to clip. The player's clip
controls were reworked, two ways of losing a draft were fixed, and Settings are reorganised around
clipping.

A new look

The whole app is now printed in one riso-style world: dark plum card stock, grainy ink blooms, and
Big Shoulders Display for titles. Colour carries meaning and nothing else:

  • Pink is acting: search, the Clip button, the range you are marking.
  • Blue is where you were: resume positions, recently opened films.
  • Yellow is set aside: ranges waiting to export, your clips.
  • Red is only for errors and deleting.

The app icon and launch screen are re-printed to match. The theme picker and AMOLED toggle are
gone from this build, since there is one look.

Home is for finding a film

  • A big search field at the top, focused when home opens. Results appear as you type; Esc clears.
  • Recently opened: the films you opened in the player, each marked where you stopped. Click one
    to pick up there.
  • Addon catalogs are folded behind Browse catalogs at the bottom. Your clips moved to Library,
and the separate Search tab is gone because home does its job.

The player

  • Two draft-losing bugs fixed. "Clip" on a subtitle search result now actually fills IN and
    OUT (it used to look like nothing happened). And with unexported ranges, the first Esc only warns;
a second Esc leaves the player.
  • Frame stepping is back on , and ., snapped to the film's real frame rate and pausing first.
The timecodes stay at tenths of a second.
  • The clip row is regrouped: marks, then set-aside ranges, then export. Ranges are numbered in
film order and show where they sit; click one to jump there, remove it with its x and undo within
    6 seconds.
  • Press ? for every shortcut. The IN/OUT handles can be focused and nudged with the arrow keys.
  • On the timeline, the playhead is a white line, the range being marked is pink and set-aside
ranges are yellow, visible over the played part too.

Settings, organised around clipping

The sidebar is now Clips / Sources / Player / Account / App.

  • Clips has where clips are saved and how they are named, plus a new Export tools panel. It
shows which ffmpeg StreamCut uses and whether it can burn in subtitles (needs libass), tonemap
HDR (needs zimg) and use a hardware encoder. Both of the first two fail silently otherwise, so
check here before blaming a clip.
  • Sources: addons, plugins, debrid/TMDB/MDBList, stream selection.
  • Player: decoding, preferred audio and subtitle languages (clips inherit what is playing),
    subtitle rendering.

Settings that only serve watching (next episode, skip intro, continue watching, home and poster
layout, Trakt/Simkl tracking, downloads, notifications) are hidden.

Installing

Same as before. The DMG is ad-hoc signed and not notarized (spctl --assess reports rejected,
checked against this exact build), so macOS will block it on first launch. Pick one:

  • Open StreamCut, let macOS block it, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and press
Open Anyway next to the message about it. Once is enough.
  • Or, in a terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/StreamCut.app

Apple Silicon only: no Intel DMG, no Windows MSI, Linux builds from source. The bundle's
CFBundleShortVersionString reads 1.3.0 because jpackage refuses a major version of 0; the tag

Known rough edges

  • Alpha software. Stored data and file layout may change between releases without a migration.
  • The new clipper labels (home, player, the new settings categories) are English only; the rest of
the app stays translated, so other languages show a mix.
  • Self-hosted backends: this client calls register_current_device, sync_get_library_delta_cursor
and get_my_member_access. If your Supabase schema lacks them, device registration and part of
sync log errors; clipping and local use are unaffected.
  • The desktop data directory is still ~/Library/Application Support/Nuvio, shared with upstream
Nuvio Desktop if you run both.
  • iOS and Android targets are unverified in this fork. Desktop is what gets tested.

@julianbou julianbou released this 21 Sep 05:33

0.2.0-alpha does not start on a Mac without Homebrew — it bounces once in the Dock and quits.
This release is the same code, packaged so it does. If you are on 0.1.0-alpha or 0.2.0-alpha, replace it.

Why 0.2.0-alpha would not open

The Java runtime bundled inside the app was copied from a JDK installed through Homebrew, and that
JDK loads its font, image and colour libraries from Homebrew's folders instead of carrying them.
On the machine that built it, those folders exist; on yours, likely not, and the app died before
drawing a window.

0.2.1-alpha bundles Eclipse Temurin 17.0.20.1, which is self-contained. The build now also refuses
to produce an app that links against anything outside itself and macOS, so this cannot ship again
unnoticed. Verified on this build: no library in the bundle references a path outside it, and none
is loaded from outside it at runtime.

Everything below is carried over from 0.2.0-alpha, which never reached anyone who could open it.

Sign-in works now

0.1.0-alpha shipped without its backend credentials baked in, so it could never reach the server.
It showed Not signed in in Settings → Account while your addons sat there loaded from disk, and
the only button it offered was Sign Out — which wipes the local library and, from that state,
left the app with no way back to the sign-in screen at all. Restarting was the only way out.

Fixed on both ends:

  • The DMG carries its backend configuration, so signing in and syncing work.
  • Settings → Account offers Sign In whenever there is no session, instead of only Sign Out.
  • Signing out always lands on the sign-in screen, even when the app already considered itself
signed out. It used to write a state it was already in, which the gate never noticed.
  • Signing out no longer leaves behind the stale flag that could keep an install out of the sign-in
screen permanently if the local wipe failed.

If 0.1.0-alpha wiped your addons: they come back on your next sign-in, as long as they had synced
to your account.

Sync

Trakt, debrid, TMDB and MDBList credentials now sync. The client asked the server for a function
that was never written, so that step of every sync failed — the rest of the sync (addons, library,
watch progress) was unaffected. Self-hosters: apply supabase/patch-seed-provider-credentials.sql.

Installing

Same as before. The DMG is ad-hoc signed and not notarized (spctl --assess reports rejected,

StreamCut is a desktop media app built around one job: find a moment in a film and cut it out.

It is a fork of Nuvio Desktop, rearranged clip-first — the
library and the player are still there, but everything is pointed at marking a range and exporting it.

This is the first release, and it is alpha. Expect breaking changes between versions, with no migration
for settings or stored data.

Finding the moment

  • Find a line of dialogue (Cmd+F, or the magnifier in the header). Type a phrase, jump to where it is
said, or set IN and OUT around it in one click. You pick which subtitle track to search in the panel —
it does not have to be the one on screen.
  • Scenes (B, or the grid icon). The whole runtime as a scrollable grid of stills, instead of
seek-watch-seek. Click a still to go there.
  • Stills on the scrub bar. Hover the progress bar and you get the frame under the cursor. The strip is
built in the background when you open a film — once the stream has settled, so it does not fight the
opening buffer — so this works on films you have never opened Scenes for.
  • The strip is deliberately cheap: -skip_frame nokey plus a small read block size make it cost roughly a
tenth of the film rather than a full decode pass. Measured at 58x less CPU than the naive version.

Cutting

  • Mark at the playhead. Set IN and OUT while the film plays (I / O), type exact timecodes, and zoom
the trim bar in until the cut lands on the frame you meant.
  • Several ranges per title, exported in one pass.
  • Frame-exact export, with HDR tonemapping so a clip taken from an HDR source does not come out grey.
  • Subtitle burn-in, when the ffmpeg on your machine can do it — see ffmpeg below.
  • Clips come out in the source's own shape, with no size cap.

The library

  • A clips page, and a home screen that puts clips first. Cards carry the title they came from, the
range, the resolution and the size.
  • A folder per film (off by default). Turned on, clips are grouped the way the source already is:
    Dune/ for a film, Severance/Season 02/Episode 05/ for an episode. Seasons are zero-padded so a file
manager's alphabetical sort is also broadcast order, and the folder names are deliberately not localized —
otherwise changing the app language would start a second Temporada 02 beside the first and split one
    show across both.
  • Deleting a clip is undoable.

Also in this release

  • New identity. Scissors over a film-strip play button; one logo drives the icons, the launch screen and
the wordmark. The app is StreamCut in all 23 locales.
  • The multi-user profile feature is gone — no picker, no PIN, no avatars; the app boots straight into the
content. Existing installs keep their library, watch progress, addons and settings.
  • Upstream's auto-updater is disabled and the backend is a self-hosted Supabase schema.
  • The data directory stays at ~/Library/Application Support/Nuvio, on purpose: moving it would orphan the
library and watch history of anyone who ran an earlier build.

Install

Download StreamCut-macOS-arm64-0.1.0-alpha.dmg, open it, drag StreamCut to Applications.

This build is ad-hoc signed and not notarized, so Gatekeeper will refuse it the first time (spctl
reports rejected — checked against this exact build, not assumed). Pick one:

  • Open StreamCut, let macOS block it, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and press
Open Anyway next to the message about it. Once is enough.
  • Or, in a terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/StreamCut.app

If neither appeals, build from source: ./gradlew :composeApp:run.

Check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt:

shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt

What is not in this release

  • Apple Silicon only. No Intel (x86_64) DMG and no Windows MSI. The pipeline that builds those needs
Apple signing certificates and other secrets this repository does not have yet; this DMG was built and
verified on a local Mac instead.
  • Linux: build from source.

ffmpeg

StreamCut shells out to ffmpeg and wants one with zscale (for tonemapping) and, for burned-in subtitles,
subtitles (libass). It probes the ffmpeg binaries on your machine and takes the first that has them, so
there is normally nothing to configure — but a stock Homebrew ffmpeg has neither, and subtitle burn-in will
fail with a message saying so. NUVIO_FFMPEG_PATH overrides the choice.

Known rough edges

  • Alpha software. Stored data and file layout may change between releases without a migration.
  • The macOS bundle's CFBundleShortVersionString reads 1.1.0, not 0.1.0-alpha — jpackage refuses a major
version of 0, so the build coerces it. The tag and the DMG filename carry the real version.
  • iOS and Android targets are unverified in this fork. Desktop is what gets tested.
