Lap v0.3.2 brings new ways to explore, import, and organize your photo library. Discover geotagged photos in Map View, play Google Motion Photos, import media into date-based folders, and clean up duplicates across the library. This release also adds sharper thumbnails for large displays, configurable RAW previews, and important fixes for selection, album handling, and Linux AppImage compatibility.

Highlights

• Map View — Explore geotagged photos and videos on an interactive map directly from the main toolbar. The map follows your current view and filters, groups nearby items into clusters with photo counts, and lets you open a cluster to browse its photos. Return to the map without losing your position or zoom. (#223)
• Google Motion Photos — Play the embedded video in supported Google/Android Motion Photo JPEGs instead of seeing only the still image. Motion Photos are recognized in existing libraries and appear alongside Apple Live Photos through the unified Live & Motion Photos Smart Album condition. (#18)
• Import and Organize by Date — Import photos and videos from a folder into an album, automatically organizing them by day, month, year, or a single destination folder. The workflow preserves original filenames, supports RAW files and Apple adjustment sidecars, skips duplicate content, and provides progress, cancellation, and continuation controls. (#86)
• Library-Wide Duplicate Cleanup — Review the space you can reclaim and delete removable copies across all duplicate sets in one action, while preserving the keep choice for each set. (#291)
• Sharper Thumbnails and Configurable RAW Previews — Choose thumbnail resolutions up to 1024 px and larger grid sizes for high-resolution displays. For RAW files, choose between RAW rendering and the camera’s embedded preview, with consistent thumbnail and preview behavior. (#274, #275, #269)

New Features and Improvements

• Added a Tianditu map provider option for browsing maps in China, configurable with your own API token.
• Added date-based import layouts including YYYY/YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY/YYYY-MM, and YYYY. Capture dates are used when available, with file modification dates as a fallback. Imported files appear in the album without a separate full scan. (#86)
• Added import summaries showing imported, skipped, and failed files, plus safeguards against importing between identical or nested source and destination folders.
• Added thumbnail quality profiles of 256, 512, and 1024 px, with corresponding grid-size ranges up to 180, 360, and 720 px. (#274)
• Added a RAW thumbnail source setting: RAW Rendering remains the default, while Embedded preview offers the camera-generated image. Both options fall back to the alternative when necessary. (#275, #269)
• Added a Thumbnail corners setting to choose between theme-defined corners and square thumbnails. (#74)
• Added a small-image filter with 160, 320, and 640 px thresholds. It hides an item only when both dimensions are below the threshold, reducing clutter from icons and tiny previews without excluding files from scanning or indexing. Visible results and counts stay consistent across browsing and search. (#258)
• Removed the 1,000-result cap from visual/semantic search and the 10-result cap for regular text, filename, and metadata matches in unified search. Search similarity now consistently controls the relevance cutoff for keyword photo searches. (#279)
• Added automatic loading of additional people as you scroll through the People list. (#279)
• Added a double-click preference to open photos and videos in Quick Preview or a separate viewer window. (#281)
• Unified collection and tag editing. Add or remove selected photos directly in Edit collections, and create, rename, or delete tags from Edit tags, with consistent selection states and feedback. (#283)
• Added a Set As menu for assigning an album cover or setting the selected image as desktop wallpaper. Wallpaper support is available on macOS, Windows, and GNOME Linux, including suitable companion images from RAW+JPEG pairs. (#292)

• Restored Random sorting for rediscovering photos. Grouping is disabled while Random sorting is active. (#303)

• Improved handling of unavailable albums on removable drives and network storage, retaining their cached folder trees and rechecking availability when accessed.
• Reworked subfolder refresh to update the folder hierarchy without regenerating thumbnails or requiring a full media scan.
• Added a language selector to the welcome screen and preserved the left panel’s expanded or collapsed state between sessions.
• Reorganized Browse and Grid settings and improved labels and translations across supported languages.
• Added embedded AppImage update information and companion .zsync files for delta updates through compatible tools such as AppImageUpdate and AppImageLauncher. (#284)

• Fixed missing iPhone video camera metadata, including make, model, and software information stored in Apple QuickTime tags, completing the follow-up to the iPhone video import report. (#221)
• Fixed multilingual search-model downloads failing on slow connections by increasing the connection timeout from 3 to 30 seconds and displaying more useful download errors. (#272)
• Fixed duplicate, ghost, and unexpectedly cleared selections in Multi-Select mode, and preserved selection and panel state during content refreshes. (#267)
• Fixed AppImage startup failures and blank windows caused by bundled runtime conflicts on newer Linux distributions, including the reported Fedora 44 GNOME and Wayland cases. (#224, #270, #271)

Auto Update

Existing macOS and Windows installations can use Lap’s built-in auto-update feature.

For Linux AppImage installations, download the new AppImage from the table above instead of using the built-in updater. This release includes update information and .zsync files for future delta updates through compatible external AppImage update tools.

Linux DEB installations can also be updated by downloading and installing the matching DEB package.
