MenubarHide 1.6.1

Choose a tag to compare

@junior-rj junior-rj released this 15 Sep 20:40

MenubarHide 1.6.1 brings hiding back on macOS 27, which rewrote the menu bar and broke the old trick.

  • macOS 27 composites every icon into one system window and discards an oversized status item instead of clamping it, so the separator no longer pushed anything off-screen. The separator is now sized just under the per-display cutoff and inflates with a few hidden spacers, and the icons it displaces move into macOS's own overflow menu, where they stay clickable.
  • After updating on macOS 27, drag the icons you want to hide to the left of the # once: the app re-registers its items and macOS places them at the left end of the bar.
  • Panel mode and Icon Arrangement are disabled on macOS 27, where the system no longer exposes the per-icon windows and per-app positions they relied on. Both are unchanged on macOS 26 and earlier.
  • Wide and multi-display setups are covered; everything on macOS 26 Tahoe and earlier keeps its existing behavior.

This release sharpens accessibility and the hidden-icons panel.

  • VoiceOver now reads the toggle button by state, the separator, and each icon in the panel, in English and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Icons in the panel highlight with the system accent color on hover, so they read as clickable.
  • The panel keeps a steady height whether or not any icons are hidden.
  • Minor typography cleanup in the About window.

Sandboxed apps join the remembered arrangement, and failures are no longer silent.

  • Icon Arrangement now covers sandboxed apps: their position lives inside the app container, which the bundle id alone never reached, so those icons were missing from every snapshot and restore.
  • Restore re-validates what it writes (status item keys only, never the global domain) instead of trusting the saved snapshot, and an unreadable preferences folder keeps the last snapshot instead of wiping it.
  • Forwarded clicks from the panel must land on the hidden side of the toggle, not merely inside the menu bar strip.
  • The panel no longer opens over icons that were brought back by hand during its capture.
  • Quitting expands the bar first, so hidden icons are not left parked off-screen for their apps to remember.
  • Launch at Login, spacing and restore now say so when macOS refuses the change; if ⌃⌥H is taken by another app, the menu tells you.
  • Panel width is clamped to the display; the saved-count line uses proper plurals.

v1.4.3

Choose a tag to compare

@junior-rj junior-rj released this 05 Sep 14:03

Two fixes for the hidden icons panel.

  • The panel now opens on the display that holds the menu bar instead of the one with keyboard focus, so it no longer lands on the wrong monitor in multi-display setups.
  • Expanding the bar by hand (option-click or the hotkey) while the panel was capturing its icons no longer leaves the bar collapsed with the app believing it is expanded, which could save parked icon positions into the remembered arrangement.

Internal fixes found in a technical audit of the code, plus the project's first test suite.

  • The three closures that captured self strongly now capture it weakly. The auto-collapse monitor's closure was keeping a retain cycle alive while armed.
  • The Carbon hotkey and its event handler are now unregistered on deinit; the registration was unbalanced.
  • The legacy capture path no longer sits behind SCShareableContent: it was fetched before the loop and an error aborted the whole function, skipping the very path the code treats as primary.
  • backingScaleFactor now comes from the display the window is on, which keeps the panel icons sharp on multi-monitor setups with different scales.
  • Click target validation requires the whole frame inside the display, not just its centre. A very wide window centred on the menu bar strip used to pass.
  • New MenubarHideTests target (Swift Testing, 21 tests) covering the pure decision functions: position validity, arrangement merge, pinning of the app's own items, geometric click validation.

No visible behaviour changes. Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Requires macOS 14+.

MenubarHide 1.3.0

Your menu bar layout now survives a restart.

  • Icon arrangement is remembered and restored. MenubarHide snapshots where every icon sits while the bar is expanded and stable, and writes those positions back at launch. Icons that macOS parked off-screen on a full bar — which used to keep coming back in the wrong place — are repaired automatically.
  • New "Icon Arrangement" submenu: save the current layout on the spot, or restore the saved one. Icons of apps that are already running move back on their next launch.
  • New "Menu Bar Spacing" submenu: choose how much room each icon takes (presets, a custom value, or reset to the macOS default) to fit more icons on a crowded bar. Takes effect after you log out and back in.

Small quality-of-life update.

  • New "About MenubarHide" item in the right-click menu: opens the native macOS about panel showing the app version, a link to this repository and the license
  • App now ships a proper copyright string

MenubarHide 1.1.0

@junior-rj junior-rj released this 05 Aug 01:15

Fixes the two big annoyances from 1.0.0.

  • Icon layout now survives reboots: saved positions are preserved instead of being reset on every launch, so your fixed/hidden arrangement stays put
  • After login, the app waits for the menu bar to settle before collapsing (no more late-launching apps getting swallowed or parked off-screen)
  • Panel icons are now clickable: a single click opens the real item's menu (click forwarding was structurally broken in 1.0.0)
  • Clear alerts with a direct path to System Settings when Accessibility or Screen Recording permission is missing
  • Hardening: anti-spoofing check before forwarding clicks, no more stale auto-collapse firing mid-interaction, diagnostic logging across the click path
  • Release DMG is now signed with Developer ID (in addition to notarization)
