SmartTimeArchive 2.0.0
Archive the history of a Time Machine (APFS) backup disk into plain, dated folders on another disk or a network unit. Your Time Machine disk is only read, never changed.
Install
- Installer: download
SmartTimeArchive-2.0.0.pkgbelow and double-click it. It carries its own Python (macOS 11 or newer, Intel or Apple silicon). It is not signed by Apple: the first time, open System Settings > Privacy & Security and press Open Anyway. - From the source:
git clonethis repository and run./install.sh(no warning from macOS).
Then open SmartTimeArchive from Applications, or type sta (sta --tmux to keep it running if the window closes).
Highlights
- Guided terminal UI: nothing preselected, nothing starts without your yes, cancel at any moment, optional verification of the copy.
- Hard links kept between dates (a real 12-backup history: 184 GB instead of 671 GB), sha256 manifests, honest final status.
- Every copy into an APFS disk image creates a new adaptive image; a full disk stops the copy at once.
- The engine runs as administrator, so it is installed root-owned and its file handling in your folders is done with your own rights (see the README security model).
Known limits
- Encrypted / locked backup disks are not handled yet (planned for 2.1); unlocking in Finder first should work but was not tested.
- Tested on the newest macOS only; macOS 11-14 and the Intel build were not tested.
SHA-256 of the .pkg: 645cc6da794c4f1b88d1fe6cbe92d5d5964874ae34cec08fb718acafb0ddaef9
