Relay 0.5.2 — C++ rewrite, installers and SSH identities
Native C++26/Qt preview with installers that update the native rewrite without a manual uninstall. Electron 0.5.0 remains the stable release.
Changes included in this refreshed 0.5.2 preview
- Direct toolbar actions for Pull, Fetch and Push, including Pull before a refresh.
- Resizable Changes and History panels, including the vertical History diff divider.
- Quick per-repository SSH identity selection without GitHub sign-in.
- Saved SSH identities for GitHub SSH clone, fetch, pull and push. HTTPS continues to use GitHub OAuth.
- SSH profiles are checked against the actual remote host, including a separate push URL.
This replaces the earlier 0.5.2 preview installers and moves the v0.5.2 tag to commit 5ac9740. If you downloaded the earlier 0.5.2 preview, download and run these refreshed installers again.
Windows x64
Download Relay-Native-Setup-0.5.2-x64.exe and run the wizard:
- Choose the installation folder.
- Optionally create a desktop shortcut.
- Later native installers remember that folder and install the update over the previous version. Close Relay Native before updating.
The default is %LOCALAPPDATA%/Programs/Relay Native. No administrator privileges are required. If you used the native 0.5.1 ZIP, select its extracted folder once to adopt it. The installer refuses Electron or unrelated folders. Settings, account configuration and repositories are preserved.
macOS Apple Silicon
Open Relay-Native-0.5.2-arm64.dmg, quit Relay Native and drag Relay Native.app into Applications. Confirm Replace to update; there is no separate uninstall. If your previous native app is in ~/Applications or another folder, replace it in that location instead. Keep the old Electron Relay.app separate.
Requirements and preview limitations
- Git >=2.35.0 and GitHub CLI >=2.98.0 remain external dependencies. macOS requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14+; Homebrew Git/gh are recommended for Finder launches.
- Windows installers are unsigned. macOS apps are ad-hoc signed, not notarized.
- Updates are installed by running each new installer; there is no background auto-updater.
- Manual multi-account OAuth, credential reuse, private clone/fetch/push and publication verification on installed platforms is still pending. Test in disposable repositories and report issues with OS version and reproduction steps.
- This preview is separate from the future self-contained bundled-runtime distribution.
SHA256SUMS.txt lists the installer checksums.
Validation
CI run 36146657695 passed on macOS ARM64 and Windows x64 for commit 5ac97408f7d4e15224b4507fffe202286e03d272, including app tests, installer builds and installed-app smoke checks. Windows also passed custom-directory upgrade, optional desktop shortcut, actual 0.5.1 ZIP adoption, locked-file refusal and Electron preservation tests. macOS passed DMG verification and launch of the app copied from the mounted image.
The new UI tests passed on both platforms. A local Git transport fixture additionally verified GitHub SSH clone/fetch/pull/push with the selected key and no OAuth token; this does not replace the pending real-account checks above.
Relay 0.5.1 — Rewrite in C++
A preview of Relay rewritten in C++26 with Qt 6.11.1. This is a prerelease; Electron 0.5.0 remains the stable release.
What's included
- Multiple GitHub accounts, repository account bindings and independent commit identities.
- Native changes/diff views, image previews, progressive history and an optional colored branch graph.
- Branch workflows, merge/rebase conflict handling, stash, recoverable discard, tags, revert and cherry-pick.
- Light, Dark and Catppuccin themes with editable palettes.
- Source installers for Apple Silicon and Windows x64, plus first-run Git/GitHub CLI checks.
Downloads and requirements
The ZIP archives are native Release source builds with Qt deployed, not self-contained DMG/NSIS installers. Install Git >=2.35.0 and GitHub CLI >=2.98.0 separately.
- macOS Apple Silicon (macOS 14+): extract the ZIP and move Relay Native.app to Applications. Git and gh are expected through Homebrew.
- Windows x64: extract the entire ZIP to a dedicated folder and run Relay.exe. Keep the accompanying DLLs and resources together.
- Source installation instructions are in the README at this tag.
Preview limitations
- Windows builds are unsigned; macOS builds are ad-hoc signed and not notarized. OS first-run security prompts may appear.
- Actual multi-account OAuth, credential reuse, private clone/fetch/push and GitHub publication still need end-to-end verification on both installed platforms.
- Stable bundled-runtime packaging, full platform UX/accessibility checks and footprint/startup comparisons remain incomplete.
- The native app shares public settings and the isolated GitHub CLI profile with Electron. Keep a backup of your Relay settings before trying the preview.
- This is not a claim of complete GitHub Desktop feature parity.
SHA256SUMS.txt contains the download checksums.
Feedback wanted
Please try account sign-in/switching, per-repository identities, private clone/fetch/push, commit/diff/history and branch workflows in a disposable test repository. Report your OS version, steps to reproduce, expected/actual behavior and a screenshot if helpful in GitHub Issues. Do not include tokens or private repository contents.
Automated validation
Native CI run 36044261741 passed on macOS ARM64 and Windows x64 for commit a473ceb7ce186a89087c4c713dc496337114a312, using pinned Qt 6.11.1. Both platforms completed build, CTest, source installation and installed/staged application smoke checks. The Windows installer now discovers the active Visual Studio CRT instead of assuming a fixed VC143 directory. These automated checks do not replace the manual account/remote checks listed above.
Relay 0.5.0
- History is now a full commit browser: progressive loading with no cap, per-commit detail, changed files, diffs and search.
- Repository sidebar sorts manually (drag or keyboard), by age, by name, or by latest commit.
- SSH identities for non-GitHub hosts — no personal access token, no stored keys or passphrases.
- One repository action row instead of up to four header rows, a readable text scale, and a fixed packaged app icon.
- macOS Apple Silicon and Windows x64. Both unsigned: on macOS right-click Relay → Open on first run. Not yet verified on Windows.
Relay 0.4.0
First working Relay desktop release.
- Multiple GitHub accounts through browser OAuth
- Clone from your GitHub repository list or an HTTPS/SSH URL
- Scan folders for existing local repositories
- Remove repository shortcuts without deleting files
- Per-account commit email and per-repository account routing
The installers are unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper may show a first-run warning.
