GTA4NX v35 — Performance Edition (Stable Test Build)

@kabba536 kabba536 released this 23 Oct 16:30

Performance Edition — stable test build

This is not the final GTA4NX version. Development continues toward a port that is truly
worthy of Nintendo Switch. v35 is the established performance-focused option while that work
continues.

Who should use this build?

Choose v35 if you want the more conservative, established option. It uses a longer 150 m horizon
and more traffic/pedestrians than v50 RC1, with a lower nearby detail scale of 0.45.

Observed performance

These are approximate results from real Nintendo Switch testing, not fixed guarantees. Performance
can vary with the area, time of day, on-screen effects, shader cache and console mode.

  • General gameplay: 25–30 FPS.
  • Some interiors: up to 30 FPS.
  • Driving through the city: 22–28 FPS, depending on the in-game time of day.

Improvements in v35

  • The small sun-shadow-caster filter now works during normal gameplay, instead of depending on the
    profiler's pass tag.
  • Three diagnostic fixed-state hashes per draw are disabled on Switch.
  • A diagnostic setting is read once per frame instead of copied for every renderer command.
  • Repeated required-binding-failed messages are rate-limited, preventing tens of thousands of
synchronous SD-card log writes during a session.
  • Retains the established PGO build, native audio DSP, texture cache without age-based eviction and
    reserved texture memory arena.

Profile

Setting v35 Performance
Nearby detail scale 0.45
Far clip 150 m
Traffic / parked cars 0.38 / 0.35
Pedestrians / scenario pedestrians 0.45 / 0.45
Sun-shadow distance scale 0.65

Installation

Players only need GTA4NX-v35-performance.zip. Extract it to the root of the SD card and keep
the included NRO and profile together:

sdmc:/switch/gta4nx/gta4nx.nro
sdmc:/switch/gta4nx/LibertyRecomp/native.toml

You still need your own GTA IV Xbox 360 USA disc files and Title Update 8. See the
Spanish installation guide
for the full procedure. Developers can download the separately named source-code ZIP.

GTA4NX v50 RC1 — Quality Edition (Pre-release)

Choose a tag to compare

@kabba536 kabba536 released this 23 Oct 16:30

Quality Edition RC1 — pre-release

This is a release candidate, not the final GTA4NX version. Development and real-console
validation continue toward a port that is truly worthy of Nintendo Switch.

Who should use this build?

Choose v50 RC1 if you want to test the newest renderer work and higher nearby geometry/detail. Its
detail scale is 0.65, but it uses a shorter 100 m horizon and lower traffic/pedestrian density to
control the extra cost. v35 remains the conservative performance option.

Observed performance

These are approximate results from real Nintendo Switch testing, not fixed guarantees. Performance
can vary with the area, time of day, on-screen effects, shader cache and console mode.

  • General gameplay: 20–25 FPS.
  • Some interiors: up to 30 FPS, but this can vary.
  • Driving through the city: 17–24 FPS.
  • Lowest observed value: 13 FPS when a train passes. Outside that case, observed minimums have
    not fallen below 17 FPS.

Improvements from v35 to v50

  • Reuses scratch memory for converted vertex buffers and avoids conversion work when a persistent
    GPU copy already exists.
  • Moves frame-queue back-pressure outside the command-capture lock and batches attachment barriers.
  • Releases CPU-side texture copies after GPU upload and handles texture-capture allocation failure
    without terminating the game.
  • Reduces repeated diagnostic-context clearing and cross-core cache-line traffic.
  • Adds a Switch lock-free path for compatible multi-object waits.
  • Stops re-registering unchanged vertex declarations and removes proven-unnecessary vector-register
    save/reload blocks from generated code.
  • Protects complete vehicle, pedestrian, skinned, wheel, hair and weapon shadows from the
    small-shadow cut.
  • Drops eligible small sun-shadow pieces before they cross the full renderer pipeline.
  • Fixes the v49 shadow regression: dirty-state words from an early-dropped shadow draw are now
carried into the next draw or clear, preventing stale shader constants and flickering or missing
    shadows.

Validation and candidate status

The dirty-state path was replay-tested on PC over 4 × 20,000 randomized draws:

Path Draws with incorrect constants
Reference 0
v49 regression 53,046
v50 fix 0

The available dirty-state, draw-state cache and ownership/retirement project tests also passed.
However, final shadow appearance, long-session memory behaviour and the real performance benefit
still require wider Switch testing. No FPS increase is promised.
