Dimmer 1.4.0 fixes a first-close bug that dates from 1.0, works on Macs without a lid sensor, and gives every blur box a choice of named looks.

  • The first close after opening the lid now dims. Before, it sometimes did nothing, because smoothing hid the lid reaching the top of its range, so the screen never took its open brightness. Now the keyboard and screen start dimming once the lid is about two degrees below the top of their range. This fixes the cause I could reproduce; if a first close still fails after Dimmer has been running for a long time, a bug report with what happened helps.
  • On a Mac without a readable lid-angle sensor, Dimmer no longer leaves you with nothing: Privacy veil (Ctrl+Cmd+P), Go dark and Keep awake all work, and the angle controls are unavailable. Nothing polls the lid, and Go dark wakes on keyboard or pointer input instead. This mode is tested by forcing it on a Mac that has the sensor; no Mac without one has been tried.
  • Snap to blur, Blur by angle and Privacy veil each have a Look menu: Frost, Mist, Slate, Smoke and Charcoal. Snap to blur and Privacy veil set blur strength and tint together; Blur by angle sets its tint and keeps its range. Change a control yourself and the menu shows Custom; Cmd+Z undoes a look in one step.

The veil is a visual cover, not a lock. No Screen Recording, Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission. No account or telemetry. Update checks are optional.

One universal app for macOS 14 or later, signed with a Developer ID and notarised by Apple. Tested on a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max (MacBookPro18,2) on macOS 27.2; Intel is untested.

On 1.3.0 or later, Dimmer offers this update itself, or choose Check for updates…. Dimmer 1.2.1 and earlier cannot update themselves, so install 1.4.0 by hand once: download Dimmer-1.4.0.dmg below, open it and drag Dimmer to Applications, replacing the old copy. Your settings carry over.

Check it against SHA256SUMS with shasum -a 256 Dimmer-1.4.0.dmg.

The privacy shortcut uses KeyboardShortcuts by Sindre Sorhus (MIT). Updates use Sparkle 2.10.0 (MIT, with BSD and zlib notices).
