@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 13 Oct 01:36

UrbanRecomp Enhanced 1.0.4

Terraforming Mars adds a five-year cleanup challenge: turn a polluted, coal-powered colony into green Native terrain while keeping its population and power network alive. All five downloads are fresh 1.0.4 builds with the complete 21-track bundled soundtrack, guides, credits and licenses.

Changes

  • New scenario: select Terraforming Mars in the lower card of the rightmost scenario column. Start in April 2050 on a water-free 120×100 colony with 20 coal plants, developed industry, housing, transport, services and $60,000.
  • Harder objectives: plant 2,400 park tiles, retain 50,000 people, reduce average pollution to 8 or less, keep pollution hot spots within 1% of the map and power at least 95% of zones. Hold every target for twelve consecutive monthly checks by April 2055.
  • Visible terraforming: Martian soil gradually turns green as cleanup progresses. Victory restores the current Native seasonal palette, foliage, minimap and stadium appearance. Conditions can regress before success.
  • Original-style presentation: scenario card, fax briefing, fixed-size progress panel, Dr. Wright victory/failure messages and a separate completion mark.
  • Rendering fixes: protect the HUD from city redraws, preserve the briefing font, keep progress clear of tool prices and prevent construction behind the progress panel.
  • Save compatibility: schema v10 retains all scenario progress. Existing v2–v9 city records remain readable. Active saves from the earlier Mars preview restart qualification under the harder rules; completed victories stay won.
  • Android startup and upgrades: serialize asset preparation when the launcher is recreated, and refresh bundled files on version upgrades while preserving saved cities.

See the bundled Terraforming Mars guide and full changelog.

Validation

Mars tests cover objective boundaries, consecutive monthly checks, the exact deadline, victory/failure messages, completion marks and current/legacy saves. Controlled five-year native simulations at 1× development confirmed that the untouched colony and the earlier 1,200-park cleanup fail; a paid 2,400-park cleanup wins after twelve months with 67,360 people. These repeatable runs exclude disasters and modal waits and establish attainable goals, rather than long-term optimal population.

Terrain, mouse, rendering, scrolling and save checks passed. The Windows single EXE is checked for embedded contents and city startup. Mac and Linux builds include architecture, host-test and packaged-startup checks; Android and iOS include emulator/simulator startup and ROM-picker checks. Packages are checked for matching music, current documentation and absence of ROMs or signing keys.

Mobile gameplay has not yet been verified on physical devices. Large cities and high development/fast-forward speeds remain CPU and memory intensive.

UrbanRecomp Enhanced 1.0.3

This update fixes UFO visibility and Dr. Wright warnings, adds grass to Swamp water, and redraws Venus foliage with finer leaf detail. All five downloads are fresh 1.0.3 builds with the complete 21-track embedded soundtrack, guides, credits and licenses.

Changes

  • UFO attacks: show the native animated craft even when no ordinary vehicles are running, keep hovering UFOs visible, follow their actual targets on expanded maps, and prevent repeated sprites at distant zoom levels.
  • Dr. Wright: announce manual UFO attacks before input locks. Use city-neutral warning text without the original Las Vegas scenario reference, and avoid duplicate post-attack warnings.
  • Swamp: add seasonal grass and reeds to water and shallows, with denser shoreline growth and open animated channels. New maps also have denser land vegetation.
  • Venus: nine detailed alien plant forms and mirrored variants, with curling fronds, lobed pods, forked shoots, thin trunks and individual leaf highlights in the original trees' style.
  • Disaster menu: approved nuclear meltdown and UFO artwork, centered on the third row with aligned input targets.
  • Moon: permanent pale cracked ice, no floods, and sparse gray rock formations.
  • Desert: occasional lone cacti using three silhouettes and normal forest-tile behavior.

UrbanRecomp Enhanced 1.0.2

This update improves the natural terrain and makes Basalt lava floods ignite fires. All five downloads are fresh 1.0.2 builds with the complete 21-track embedded soundtrack, guides, credits and licenses.

Changes

  • Mars: much fewer natural formations, using three pale rock shapes with randomized orientations and seasonal frost.
  • Desert: rare, small scrub patches instead of dense vegetation.
  • Arctic: four varied snow-mound shapes replace natural trees, with seasonal blue-white shading.
  • Basalt: lava floods ignite adjacent eligible land and flammable tiles; ordinary flood and fire behavior continues.
  • Apply the terrain improvements to every map size, generation style, Practice and Journey expansion. Existing city terrain and player-built parks are preserved.

The Android APK uses the owner's
existing permanent release certificate; the private signing key is not included.

Windows and macOS downloads are included in this release. They are the verified,
unchanged Enhanced 1.0 builds and retain their enhanced-v1.0.0 filenames and
version metadata. All platform downloads are available together below.

Your own clean US cartridge ROM is required. No ROM, personal saves or private
build inputs are distributed. All 21 music tracks, Sylt map, guides, credits and
licenses are bundled in every platform package.

Mobile controls and saves

  • Tap and drag to use the game's mouse controls. PAN toggles one-finger drag
    panning; turn it off to build again. Two-finger drag also pans. Pinch or use
    - / + to zoom.
  • PAD hides/shows the virtual controls. The D-pad, A/B/X/Y, L/R, Start and
    Select provide the original SNES controls. B confirms; A backs out.
  • F12 opens enhancement options. SAVE opens the in-game save dialog or
    backs out of a menu. Bluetooth/USB game controllers are also supported.
  • The app pauses simulation/audio when backgrounded. Save the city in-game
    before closing the app; backgrounding does not automatically save the city.
  • Android stores imported ROMs and saves in app storage. iOS exposes Documents
    in Files under UrbanRecomp Enhanced. Uninstalling the app removes its storage.
  • Linux saves/settings use ${XDG_DATA_HOME:-~/.local/share}/urbanrecomp;
    URBANRECOMP_HOME can override that directory.

Full mobile installation and controls are bundled with the packages.

Validation and limits

Linux passed native compilation, rendering/scrolling/deferred-terrain tests,
touch-input ownership tests, all-map-size save checks, terrain/season checks,
the debug gift tests, soundtrack validation and packaged no-ROM startup.

Android compiled both native architectures. Its emulator check exercises the
launcher, bundled asset preparation, native SDL entry, system ROM picker,
cancellation and reopening. iOS compiled the device and simulator apps; its
simulator check verifies native startup and the ROM picker. Distributed archives
are checked for architectures, credits, all 21 matching tracks and absence of
ROMs, saves and signing keys. Android signature verification passed.

Mobile gameplay has not yet been verified on physical devices. Emulator checks
stop at ROM import; no cartridge ROM was uploaded to CI. Large cities and high
development/fast-forward speeds remain CPU and memory intensive. Start with a
smaller map on mobile devices. iOS uses Metal presentation with CPU terrain/field
composition; Linux/Android use Vulkan acceleration when supported and retain
SDL/CPU fallbacks.

Music and credits

The restored SimCity set is credited to Pinci / Church of Kondo and
Relikk, with the original MSU-1 reference work by pev / pepillopev.
Megagopolos uses Markify's restoration of the unused Vanilla Lake theme,
composed by Soyo Oka. Gigagopolois uses LOOP16B from LOOP816 (2023);
Soyo Oka / 岡素世 is its artist, composer and publisher.

Enhanced fork: kandowontu2. Upstream UrbanRecomp: blackerking.

component licenses and notices are included. This is an unofficial fan project.

Urban Recomp Enhanced Beta 23 - Milestone Music and Mouse Fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 07 Oct 01:36

Beta 23 adds the 10-million and 100-million city milestones and improves gift selection, zoomed View labels, and new-map camera behavior.

  • New city milestones: Megagopolos at 10M and Gigagopolois at 100M each have an original-style Dr. Wright announcement and a new city theme. Rewards persist in saves and announce once per city, in order if both thresholds are crossed together.
  • Milestone music: Megagopolos uses Markify's restoration of Super Mario Kart's unused Vanilla Lake theme, composed by Soyo Oka. Gigagopolois uses LOOP16B from LOOP816 (2023), with Soyo Oka / 岡素世 credited as artist, composer, and publisher. Both tracks are embedded and balanced with the restored city music: Vanilla Lake is 7.4 dB quieter and LOOP16B 5.5 dB quieter than the initial local previews. LOOP16B retains its full arrangement and ending fade.
  • Debug gifts: Shift-click the toolbox ? image to see all 15 gifts in four columns, without scrolling. Music continues while the picker is open. Selection corners follow visible icon artwork; full-image mouse targets and keyboard/controller movement remain available.
  • View tool: free mouse/keyboard movement and panning work across the expanded view. Building labels retain their native lettering size when zoomed out, with the hovered building prioritized.
  • New maps: reset the camera and zoom when opening a new city, including unsaved Test City 3. New cities default to Native terrain; loaded cities retain their saved terrain.
  • Terrain colors: redder Mars and much darker Basalt ground, retaining seasonal variations.
  • Updated credits, changelog, guides, and Windows/macOS packaging for the two additional themes.

Windows: download the single EXE. Runtime files, documentation, and all 21 music tracks are embedded. Saves/settings remain beside the EXE; --portable-docs opens the bundled guides and credits.

macOS: the ZIP contains a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel, with the same tracks, guides, and credits. The app is ad-hoc signed.

Both builds require your own clean US SimCity SNES ROM. No ROM, personal saves, or private generated native sources are distributed.

Validation: native milestone/message replays, ordered rewards and save reloads, both city themes and loop playback, gift hitboxes and bottom-row selection, continuous music with the picker open, camera reset, View input and native-size label rendering, CPU/deferred renderer checks, and complete portable bundle verification. macOS builds both architectures and checks host rendering, gift selection, PCM tracks, bundle signing, and packaged startup without a ROM.

@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 07 Oct 02:50

UrbanRecomp Enhanced 1.0

The first stable release of UrbanRecomp Enhanced brings together the work from
Enhanced Betas 1–23. It retains the tested Beta 23 gameplay and save formats,
with stable release packaging, version metadata, guides and credits.

Downloads

  • Windows x64: Download the single EXE.
    One portable EXE contains the runtime, assets, all 21 music tracks, guides,
    credits and licenses. Run it and select your own clean US SimCity SNES ROM.
    Saves and settings stay beside the EXE; --portable-docs opens the guides.
  • macOS 11 or newer: Download the universal app.
    Includes one self-contained app for Apple Silicon and Intel, with the same
    music and documentation. Copy the app to Applications and choose your ROM.
    The app is ad-hoc signed; if macOS blocks it, use Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
  • SHA-256 checksum files accompany both downloads.

What is included

  • Six map sizes: 120×100, 240×200, 480×400, 960×800, 1920×1600 and 3840×3200.
    The largest has 1,024 times the original map's area. Journey mode can
    expand the city as population milestones are reached.
  • Nine generation styles: Native, Procedural, Islands, Lakes, Rivers,
    Fractal, Continent, Delta and Atolls
    , with seeds 00000–99999. Native
    retains the original generator's feature sizes on larger maps; map 31337
    is water-free. Sharp previews support zoom and middle-mouse panning.
  • Nine land types: Native, Basalt, Amazon, Desert, Mars, Venus, Arctic,
    Swamp and Moon
    , with seasonal variations. Native is the default. Moon
    grows no natural forests; stadiums have domes on Mars, Venus and Moon.
  • Full mouse controls across setup and game screens; free middle-mouse drag
    panning with a live minimap, pointer-centered Ctrl+wheel zoom, fixed-size
    HUD/menus, adaptive widescreen and Fit-to-screen window sizing.
  • Gesture construction and building-aware Copy/Paste for zones, roads,
    railroads, power lines, parks and ordinary facilities. Partial building
    outlines select the complete building; special gifts remain unique.
  • Saved per-city development speeds of 1×, 3×, 5×, 10×, 20× and 50×;
    Tab, Shift+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab accelerate the complete simulation while
    music retains its normal tempo. Native simulation and Windows Vulkan
    composition accelerate large cities.
  • Expanded vehicle fleets, automatic post-load power repair, dates through
    year 999999, scaled starting funds, four difficulties including Super
    Hard, improved budget/message controls, and manual UFO/nuclear disasters.
  • Source-based Test City 3 for every size, a detailed placement-effects
    guide, a Shift-click debug gift palette, and zoom-aware movable View labels.
  • Megagopolos at 10 million and Gigagopolois at 100 million, with saved
    Dr. Wright announcements and additional city themes.

Music and credits

The restored SimCity soundtrack is credited to Pinci / Church of Kondo and
Relikk, with the original MSU-1 reference work by pev / pepillopev.
Megagopolos uses Markify's restoration of the unused Super Mario Kart Vanilla
Lake theme, composed by Soyo Oka. Gigagopolois uses LOOP16B from
LOOP816 (2023); Soyo Oka / 岡素世 is its artist, composer and publisher.
Both additional themes are balanced with the restored city tracks.

Enhanced fork: kandowontu2. Upstream UrbanRecomp: blackerking.
snesrecomp / recomp-ui: Matthew Stan / Matthew Stanley.
Original SimCity: Nintendo, Maxis and Electronic Arts.
Full contributor and component notices are bundled and listed in
CREDITS.md.

Compatibility and validation

Existing saves remain compatible; the release contains no ROM or personal save
data. Enhanced 1.0 is versioned independently from upstream's release series,
using the tag enhanced-v1.0.0.

Windows packaging checks every embedded file and music track, the native
runtime, 1.0 product metadata, portable launch and milestone music. The Mac
build checks both architectures, host rendering/input tests, all PCM tracks,
bundle signing and packaged startup. The current gameplay also retains the
Beta 23 milestone, gift, View, camera, renderer and save-reload validation.

Very large cities and aggressive fast-forward remain workload and hardware
dependent. Mac uses Metal presentation with CPU terrain/field composition;
Windows Vulkan compute acceleration is unavailable on Mac. The Mac app is
ad-hoc signed rather than Developer ID signed or notarized. The placement
guide documents natural growth measurements rather than promising a maximum
sustainable population. See the bundled enhancement and performance guides.

This is an unofficial fan project. Your own clean US cartridge ROM is required.

Urban Recomp Enhanced Beta 22 - City Growth, Calendar and Disasters

Choose a tag to compare

@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 06 Oct 23:38

Beta 22 rebuilds the hidden test city around the actual SNES growth rules, fixes large-map calendar/service stalls, and restores manual UFO and nuclear disasters in the native build.

  • Disasters: temporary NUKE and UFO buttons sit below the original six buttons. Select an event and close the panel to trigger it. NUKE requires a nuclear plant. Explicit UFO/meltdown activation works with NO DISASTER enabled. Both use the original attack routines and restore scenario state afterward. They replace queued routine advice with the native announcements, target actual UFO damage correctly, and center the host camera at the selected zoom.
  • F12 cleanup: remove Land Generation, Development Speed, Fix Power on Load and the disaster-trigger section. Generation stays on map selection, each city keeps its development speed, and power repair always runs after load.
  • Debug gifts: Shift-click the toolbox ? image, even while dimmed, to select any of the 15 gifts. The original two-column icons, font and hand appear in a taller box with scrolling extra rows. Full-image mouse targets and directional selection feed normal gift placement. Earned gifts are preserved.
  • Test City 3: unsaved test cities offer all six map sizes and development speeds, start with empty zones and zero population, and place industry, commerce, housing, transport, services and finite gifts according to the source rules. Existing City 3 saves retain their own layouts; power-line junction artwork is repaired from the complete network. Repair the original generated name to eight-character TESTCITY and draw minimap captions from the native font, preserving player-renamed cities. The controlled 120x100 ten-year test reached 310,880 residents with no completely empty residential lots, compared with 77,840 and 215 empty lots in the previous layout. This is an observed test result, not a sustainable maximum.
  • Large-map simulation: full-width field iterators and police/fire coverage conversion complete the entire largest map. Tab targets up to six full guest frames per display, Shift+Tab 24, and Ctrl+Shift+Tab 96. Busy batches yield after roughly 80ms plus a final complete frame and check release between frames; music remains at normal tempo. Actual acceleration depends on hardware and city workload.
  • Fast-forward performance: keep arithmetic/electrical traversal in the connected native loop and batch electrical zero-clock work at scanline boundaries. Preserve complete guest frames and derived-field timing.
  • Three software-rendered largest-city 50x/Tab replays averaged 119.39 → 108.06 ms of simulation/raster work per display, a modest 9.5% reduction. This does not establish 60 FPS; the largest-map workload remains CPU intensive.
  • Calendar: years through 999999, without leading zeroes, in the HUD and budget headings. Full years persist in city saves and snapshots; older metadata remains readable.
  • Rendering and lands: fix the top-toolbar View layer at every zoom and opaque city notices. Add Moon with no generated forests, and stadium domes on Mars, Venus and Moon.
  • Include the source-based PLACEMENT_EFFECTS.md guide for every tool and gift, the tested layout notes, full changelog and retained credits/licenses.

Windows: download the single EXE. Runtime files, documentation and all 19 restored songs are embedded; saves/settings remain beside the EXE. --portable-docs opens the embedded guides.

macOS: the ZIP contains a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel, including the same songs, guides and credits.

Both builds require your own clean US SimCity SNES ROM. No ROM, personal saves, private native-source archive or developer test data is distributed.

Validation: native CPU/interpreter disaster comparisons on all six sizes, actual menu/mouse replays and complete UFO animation, all 15 gift placements, renderer checks, calendar/save migration checks, largest test-city setup and natural ten-year growth. macOS additionally builds both architectures and runs host/rendering/save tests plus packaged startup verification.

Urban Recomp Enhanced Beta 21 - Seasonal Lands and Super Hard

Choose a tag to compare

@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 06 Oct 05:00

Seasonal lands and native setup controls

Choose GENERATION and LAND TYPE directly in the in-game map-selection screen, using the original lettering, keyboard/gamepad navigation and mouse controls. The device now has room for both rows and clean arrows and borders.

  • Terrain-type changes keep the old preview visible until the complete replacement is ready, then swap terrain and colors together. Preview zoom/pan is retained; type changes no longer clear the map or replay the initial reveal.
  • Nine generation styles: Native, Procedural, Islands, Lakes, Rivers, Fractal, Continent, Delta and Atolls. Fractal terrain is more balanced, Islands have larger building areas, and Atolls have broader land around their lagoons.
  • Eight land types: Native, Basalt, Amazon, Desert, Mars, Venus, Arctic and Swamp. Custom themes preserve the original pixel textures, connected shores and forests, and animated water. Amazon adds more forest patches.
  • All seven custom land types now change with the saved city calendar, blending monthly between winter, spring, summer and autumn. Tropical vegetation stays evergreen, lava stays hot, and Arctic terrain has a brief summer thaw. Pan minimaps follow the season; new-map previews show January. Native seasons remain unchanged.
  • Four difficulty options, including Super Hard. Super Hard now starts with the same money as Medium, while retaining its increased disaster rate. Starting funds scale with map size: $10,000, $20,000, $40,000, $80,000, $160,000 and $320,000 for Medium and Super Hard. Setup and confirmation show the actual amount.
  • Land type persists through save/load and Journey expansions. Existing saves load with Native terrain. Cities saved with Beta 21 require Beta 21 or later.

Downloads

Windows: the single portable EXE embeds the runtime, assets, documentation, credits and all 19 restored songs. Supply your own clean US SimCity SNES ROM. Saves and settings remain beside the portable EXE.

macOS: the universal app supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 11 or later, with the same embedded assets and music. It is ad-hoc signed and not notarized. The Mac terrain renderer uses the documented CPU fallback rather than Windows Vulkan terrain rendering.

No ROM or personal saves/settings are included. Full credits, changelog and bundled dependency licenses are included. Restored music credits: Pinci / Church of Kondo and Relikk; original game and port credits remain in CREDITS.md.

Validation

Windows checks cover all six map sizes and four difficulties, actual Super Hard startup funds, legacy and themed saves, renderer/terrain parity, 28 in-game seasonal captures, and seasonal reload/minimap behavior. The portable package was extracted and checked for 68 files, 19 songs and the exact tested executable. Mac checks cover six host test suites, both executable architectures, app metadata, signing and packaged startup without a ROM.

Urban Recomp Enhanced Beta 20 - Pointer Zoom and Mac Startup Fix

Choose a tag to compare

@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 05 Oct 12:59

Mac startup revision — October 5: the Mac download now includes the confirmed startup fix. ROMs with a 512-byte copier header use the same verified native profile as headerless ROMs, matching launcher verification. The original ROM file is unchanged. Unreadable or unsupported ROMs and SDL startup failures now show a visible error on Finder launches. Finder launches also write urbanrecomp-startup.log beside settings and saves. The restored soundtrack is bundled; no .snesmod installation or MSU-1 ROM patch is required. This is the exact Mac ZIP confirmed working by the user, built from fff8f1a.

Ctrl+wheel zoom now keeps the terrain under the actual mouse pointer stationary in the city and map preview, including the expanded preview. HUD and menu sizes stay fixed.

  • Account for widescreen, Fit to Screen, high-DPI scaling and fractional camera positions.
  • Preserve the anchor for each wheel event and avoid zooming from letterboxed areas.
  • Retain the native game execution and all previous enhancements from Beta 19.

Windows download: UrbanRecomp-v1.2.0-enhanced.20-windows-x64-single.exe. Runtime files, assets, all 19 restored music tracks, documentation, credits and licenses are embedded.

Mac download: UrbanRecomp-v1.2.0-enhanced.20-macos-universal.zip. Universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel, macOS 11 or newer. Unzip and move UrbanRecomp.app to Applications. The app includes statically linked SDL3, all assets, all 19 restored music tracks, documentation, credits and licenses. Settings and saves use ~/Library/Application Support/UrbanRecomp/UrbanRecomp/.

Supply your own clean US SimCity SNES ROM; no ROM or personal saves are included in either package.

Mac build limitations: ad-hoc signed, not Developer ID signed or notarized. Rendering uses Metal presentation and the CPU terrain/field fallback; Windows Vulkan compute acceleration is unavailable. Full gameplay and performance still need testing on a Mac.

Windows validation: renderer/video tests, real city wheel input beyond the original screen width, compact/expanded preview zoom round trips, CPU/GPU terrain parity, and packaged launch/extraction checks.

Mac validation: four host tests (video, renderer, scrolling, deferred terrain), both executable architectures, system-only dynamic dependencies, bundle metadata, code signature verification, packaged startup without a ROM, and archive/music/checksum checks. Local 600-frame boot tests for headered and headerless US cartridges passed with identical simulation/audio results; missing and unsupported cartridges produced the expected startup errors. Mac startup was confirmed working by the user.

Mac SHA-256: ae398d27943cad5fd8366fdabc23ebcd65170ec6a2ee8729260a65722ad9c9df. A .sha256 file is included alongside the ZIP.

@kandowontu2 kandowontu2 released this 05 Oct 04:43

Beta 19 completes the migration of the game CPU to native C execution. The release executable no longer includes the 65816 interpreter.

  • Compile every verified ROM entry address while retaining original flags, memory access order, device clocks, interrupts and save-state layouts.
  • Run construction, development batches and hidden test-city field initialization through native execution.
  • Preserve existing city saves and all enhanced features, including sharp previews, terrain styles, expanded maps and mouse controls.
  • Include native profiles for USA, Europe, France, Germany and Japan. PC gameplay enhancements require the clean US ROM.
  • Fix Japanese startup corruption caused by applying US helper substitutions at foreign ROM addresses.

Validation covered more than 335 million independent instruction comparisons, interrupt/control states, native register/save-state serialization, and matching saved-state bytes and pixels for boot, setup, city development, budgets, reports, gifts, construction, copying and save/reload. Large-map development and a 299,547-zone fill passed with no interpreter calls and no Vulkan terrain validation mismatches.

This establishes execution compatibility and removes the decoder. It does not promise a general FPS increase: most common hot paths were already compiled in Beta 18. Performance limits and verification details are bundled in GPU_PERFORMANCE.md and NATIVE_EXECUTION.md.
