A small one, but you'll notice it every time you switch an app on.

  • Switches stay where you flip them. An app switched on further down the list used to jump straight into Your apps, so you never saw its switch move. Now it stays put while it joins the VPN, and moves up to Your apps the next time you open VPNonly, or when you clear a search.
  • No jumping the other way either. Switching an app off no longer pulls it out of Your apps mid-click.

Coming from 1.9.22 or later, this update installs without asking for your password.

Requires macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon. A licence key is needed to use the app — https://vpnonly.app

Two fixes for moments where VPNonly could look like it was protecting you when it wasn't, both from customers' notes.

  • No apps on the VPN yet. Connected with nothing switched on used to show a green “Connected to NordVPN”, which reads as protected if you're used to a VPN that covers the whole Mac. Now it says no app is on the VPN yet, and the dot and the menu bar icon only turn green once one is. Connect stays hidden until an app is switched on, since switching one on connects anyway.
  • A warning when something reroutes your apps. AdGuard for Mac, and filters like it, take an app's connections and make them again from their own process, which skips the VPN while Check still passes. A proxy running on the Mac does the same for browsers. VPNonly now notices either and tells you what to change, right in the popup.

Coming from 1.9.22 or later, this update installs without asking for your password.

An honesty fix, found while testing 1.9.22.

  • Browsers built on Safari's engine. Like Safari, a browser that shows its pages with Apple's WebKit hands them to separate macOS processes, so they go around the VPN. VPNonly used to let you switch one on and call it protected. Now it says it can't be routed, and one you'd already switched on is switched off, with the reason.
  • Chrome, Firefox, Arc, Brave and Helium are unaffected. They bring their own engine, and their pages go through the VPN.
  • Helium keeps its tabs. Switching it on brings it back with the tabs it had, like Chrome and Vivaldi.

Coming from 1.9.22, this update installs without asking for your password.

VPNonly 1.9.22

@kanishkdan kanishkdan released this 30 Sep 11:30

Apps on the VPN can now reach your own network, and browsers keep their tabs. Both came from a customer's notes.

  • Your router, printer and NAS. Apps on the VPN can reach devices on your own network directly, like your router's settings page. It's on by default, as Allow Local Network in the ⋯ menu, and everything else still goes through the VPN.
  • What stays closed. Apps on the VPN reach your router only on ports 53, 80 and 443, for DNS and its settings page, which on most routers keeps them away from port mapping. Local access pauses while your Mac uses a proxy. On public Wi-Fi you can turn it off.
  • Browsers keep their tabs. Switching on a browser that's open now quits it the way ⌘Q does and brings it back with its tabs. Chrome, Vivaldi, Brave, Edge and Opera reopen with their tabs whatever their own startup setting says.
  • Nothing lost if an app won't quit. If an app is asking about unsaved changes, VPNonly leaves its switch off instead of closing it by force.

This update asks for your password once, because the part of VPNonly that sets the firewall rules changed.

Requires macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon. A licence key is needed to use the app — https://vpnonly.app

Three small touches, again from the same customer's notes.

  • Clear the search in one go. The search field has a small x on the right once you type, and Escape clears it too while the field has focus.
  • A cleaner coloured shield. With Coloured Menu Bar Icon on, the shield keeps its normal shape: the outline stays the menu bar's own colour, and only the left half turns red, green or orange.
  • Tidier status lines. When the status wraps onto a second line, it no longer starts with a stray dot.

Coming from 1.9.18 or later, this update installs without asking for your password.

A second round of ideas from the same customer, and they made Check more honest. Thank you again.

  • Every app gets checked. Check now tests each app on the VPN, not just the first one, and the top line counts them: 3 apps are on the VPN. If one isn't going through the tunnel, a card names it.
  • Both addresses up top. After a check, the VPN's address and your Mac's own sit in the top block, each on its own line.
  • A more compact popup. The selected-apps row and the green result card are gone, since the top block already says it all. Check is a small button under Disconnect, and search sits right below.
  • A popup that fits. The list grows with your apps, up to five or six, then scrolls, and shrinks when there are fewer.
  • A Check you can trust more. Your Mac's own address is now read without any system proxy, so a proxy can't make Check pass by mistake. A check is also dropped if your network changes while it runs.
  • Names without .app. Even with Finder set to show all extensions.
  • Updates on top. Update windows no longer open underneath the popup.

Coming from 1.9.18 or later, this update installs without asking for your password.

@kanishkdan kanishkdan released this 25 Sep 19:23

Almost everything in this release came from one customer's wish list. Thank you.

  • Your apps stay put. Every app you switch on now lives in a Your apps section at the top of the list, and it stays there when you switch it off, so you never have to hunt for it again. Right-click any app to add or remove it, or turn on Show Only Your Apps in the ⋯ menu to hide everything else until you search.
  • Pick a server in one click. The menu at the bottom of the popup now lists your servers directly, with a tick on the one you're using. Big lists, like Mullvad's full download, are grouped by location.
  • Labels that say only what matters. With one provider, the label is just the place and the server: Sweden · STO · 002. Mullvad files are recognised as Mullvad, and Rename config in the ⋯ menu names any provider the way you like.
  • Status at a glance, in colour. Turn on Coloured Menu Bar Icon in the ⋯ menu and the shield goes red when you're disconnected, green when you're connected, and orange when something needs a look.
  • Dialogs on top. Dialogs and file pickers now open above the popup instead of hiding underneath it, and Check for Updates moves the popup out of the way.
  • One entry per app. Apps that put an alias or a link in Applications, like JDownloader, now appear once.
  • A tidier list. No more identifiers under app names, and Apple's background helpers such as Siri, which can't be routed, are no longer offered.
  • Straighter answers. If an app is running outside the VPN, or can't be routed at all, its row and the menu bar icon now say so instead of looking protected.

Coming from 1.9.18, this update installs without asking for your password.

If another VPN app switches off the Mac's firewall, VPNonly now turns it back on and re-applies its rules within a minute; you can also pick a specific server inside a location, and apps installed in folders now show up, with Choose another app… for the rest.
