The level meter now shows what a person hears.
It was drawn straight from the raw loudness of the microphone, and loudness is heard logarithmically. Measured on a real Mac, a quiet room reads 0.0026 and ordinary speech reads 0.0106, so the old meter showed 1% and 4%: a bar that barely moved while somebody was speaking, which looks exactly like a microphone that is not working.
It is drawn in decibels now, the way meters have always been drawn. The same speech reads 34%, a quiet room 7%, and speaking close to the Mac fills most of the bar with headroom left.
Nothing else changed. Everything still happens on this Mac, and nothing leaves it.
