KeroBurn 1.0 beta 4

Choose a tag to compare

@kerokero5150 kerokero5150 released this 17 Oct 05:11

New

  • Write a file at an address. Each file has an Offset… button: chip address, start in file, length, and "keep what's already on the chip". Put a few bytes of patched code in a small file, give it the address, tick Keep, and only that range changes. Same idea as the file load dialog in Xgpro.
  • Presets remember their files. Line them up (offsets included), press Save to Preset, and they're loaded every time you pick that preset.
  • Each preset keeps its own file list while the app is open, so switching presets doesn't lose anything.
  • File rows show when the file was last modified. A saved file that's been moved or renamed shows in orange and the write won't start.
  • Hex View lines up the compare when a file has an offset.

Fixes

  • Read… crashed when the first file in the list was smaller than the chip.

Under the hood

  • The offset feature uses new minipro options (--offset, --file_offset, --length, --keep) from a patch in patches/. They work from Terminal too.

Thanks to Mike for the saved files idea, and to Lewin and Stephen for testing.

KeroBurn 1.0 beta 3

Thanks to Stephen and Lewin for the feedback that went into this one.

New

  • Chip ID now tells you what the chip really is when it doesn't match, e.g. "Wrong chip: it reads as SST39SF040", with a button to switch to that preset or make one. Handy for chips with a sticker over the part number.
  • The connected programmer and its firmware are shown under the preset name, plus the chip ID once it's been confirmed. Makes screenshots more useful when asking for help.
  • Read… opens Hex View and reads the chip right away. Saving is optional now, use Save Chip… if you want to keep it. PLDs still save straight to a .jed.
  • Presets can have an emoji icon in the sidebar.
  • Up and down arrows move through the device search results in the preset editor.

Fixes

  • Check Programmer said "Programmer OK" even with nothing plugged in. It now says no programmer was found.
  • Hex View showed only the ASCII column when the chip was read without a file loaded.
  • Chip ID on parts with no ID (GALs, ATFs, AT28C16, many EPROMs) no longer shows a red "Id failed". It just says there's no ID to check.

First launch

  • macOS 15 Sequoia and newer: right-click > Open no longer works. Try to open the app once, then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway".

KeroBurn 1.0 beta 2

@kerokero5150 kerokero5150 released this 16 Oct 09:30

New

  • Pin contact test on the T48. KeroBurn checks every leg before it writes and stops if one isn't touching. The log draws the socket so you can see which pin it is. minipro only had this for the TL866II+, so KeroBurn ships its own patch for the T48.
  • The TL866II+ pin check now draws the socket map too.
  • "Ignore pin check" option per preset, if you want to skip it.
  • Status bar showing the current step (checking pins, erasing, writing, verifying) and how long it's taking.
  • Clearer error messages for bad contact, overcurrent, chip ID mismatch and verify failures.
  • ATF16V8B and ATF22V10C presets. Atmel ATF parts need these instead of the GAL presets, otherwise you get "Overcurrent protection!".

Notes

  • Apple Silicon confirmed working on an M2 Pro (thanks Mike).
  • The pin test has only been tried on 32-pin flash so far. GALs and 28-pin parts should work, but please report if they don't.
  • Packages with GND on ZIF pin 17-24 (most 40-pin chips) skip the pin test, since the T48 can't drive those pins.
  • Chip ID on a GAL or ATF shows "Id failed". That's expected, PLDs have no ID. Fixed in the next beta.

Beta. Things work on my machine, but I'd like more people to try it before calling it 1.0.

KeroBurn is a Mac front end for minipro, for XGecu T48 / T56 / TL866II+ programmers. minipro 0.7.4, libusb and the device database are inside the app, so there's nothing else to install.

  • Universal binary, macOS 12 or later. Tested on an Intel Mac Pro with a T48. Apple Silicon builds fine but hasn't been run on real hardware yet.
  • Not notarized. The first time, right-click KeroBurn and choose Open.

Download KeroBurn-1.0.dmg below, open it and drag KeroBurn to Applications. If something breaks, open an issue.
