Download

NetworkMonitor.dmg — universal (Apple silicon and Intel), macOS 13 or later.

Open it and drag NetworkMonitor into Applications.

Important

The app is not yet signed with an Apple Developer ID, so the first time
you open it macOS says it can't verify it. That is Gatekeeper doing its job,
not a broken build. You approve it once:

  1. Open NetworkMonitor from Applications and click Done on the warning.
  2. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security, and
click Open Anyway next to NetworkMonitor.

On macOS 13 or 14 you can instead Control-click the app, choose Open, then
Open again.

Or build it from source

A locally built app is never quarantined, so this path has no warnings at all.
You need Apple's Command Line Tools (xcode-select --install), not Xcode.

git clone https://github.com/kevinabouhanna/NetworkMonitor.git
cd NetworkMonitor
./Scripts/install.sh

Update later with make update. The optional hotspot helper, which also covers
macOS, App Store, Claude, Slack and Canva updates, is installed from a clone with
make helper.

What's new since 1.0.0

  • Stop apps updating on hotspots. One setting pauses automatic updates on a
mobile hotspot and resumes them when you leave.
  • A total per connection. Usage starts over when you join a different
network, and picks up again when you rejoin the same one.
  • Internet only. LAN traffic such as AirPlay, Time Machine to a NAS or a
local Plex server is no longer counted.
  • Sub-processes. Processes are credited to the app that launched them, and
can be broken out beneath it in the popover.
  • A bar for each app's share, and a list that re-sorts live as apps overtake
    each other.
  • Per-app tracking costs about 0.55% of a core, down from roughly 1.4 cores.
  • Builds with Command Line Tools 27, and make dmg packages the app as this
    disk image.

NetworkMonitor-1.1.0.zip is the same universal app as a zip. It is quarantined
like the disk image once downloaded; clear that after unzipping with
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine NetworkMonitor.app.

Important

This download is not yet signed with an Apple Developer ID, so
macOS will refuse to open it and say the developer cannot be
verified. That is Gatekeeper doing its job, not a broken build.

Installing

Build from source — a locally built app is never quarantined, so this
path has no warnings at all:

git clone https://github.com/kevinabouhanna/NetworkMonitor.git
cd NetworkMonitor
./Scripts/install.sh

Update later with make update.

If you would rather use the zip and know what you are doing, clear the
quarantine flag yourself after unzipping:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine NetworkMonitor.app

Signed and notarized downloads that open with a double-click are
planned.
