Release list
Rift 0.10.0
Rift, a fast file manager for Windows with tabs and side-by-side panes. This release is about finding out
when something goes wrong.
Download
Rift-win-Setup.exe: installs Rift for your user (no admin rights, no .NET needed). Already have 0.9? It updates itself.Rift-win-Portable.zip: runs from any folder, no install, and updates itself too.
The exe isn't signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn on the first start: "More info" → "Run anyway".
New in 0.10
- Logs: what goes wrong is written to
%AppData%\Rift\logs, a file a day, kept for a week. Settings → "Open logs" - Crash reports: if Rift crashes, a report is saved next to the logs, and the next start offers to report it on GitHub.
The issue is filled in with the version and the stack trace; exception messages and log lines, which can name
your files, are left out, and you see everything before sending - PageUp and PageDown move a screenful in the tiles and thumbnail views
See ROADMAP.md for what's next.
Rift 0.9.0
Rift, a fast file manager for Windows with tabs and side-by-side panes. From this release on, Rift installs
properly and keeps itself up to date.
Download
Rift-win-Setup.exe: installs Rift for your user (no admin rights, no .NET needed) and adds it to the Start menu.Rift-win-Portable.zip: runs from any folder, no install.
Both update themselves from now on. The exe isn't signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn on the first start:
"More info" → "Run anyway".
Coming from the 0.7 or 0.8 zip? Run the setup once; your settings, tabs and tags stay where they were.
New in 0.9
- Installer and automatic updates (Velopack): a new version downloads in the background and installs when Rift restarts;
an "Update to x.y.z" button in the title bar restarts right away, with your tabs back - Settings → Updates: the current version, "Check now", and a switch for automatic checks
- Uninstalling through Windows Settings also removes "Open in Rift" from Explorer's menu
See ROADMAP.md for what's next.
Rift 0.8.0
Rift, a fast file manager for Windows with tabs and side-by-side panes. This release is about staying responsive:
in huge folders and on drives that are slow to answer.
Download
Unzip rift-0.8.0-win-x64.zip anywhere and run Rift.exe. Windows 10 or 11, x64; no .NET install needed.
The exe isn't signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn on the first start: "More info" → "Run anyway".
New in 0.8
- A folder with 100,000 files opens without freezing the window: reading and sorting run in the background
- Type-to-filter in such a folder answers in about 70 ms instead of 0.8 s
- Ctrl+A in 100,000 files and then a click no longer hangs for seconds; memory with that folder open is less than half
- A network drive that's asleep no longer holds up the start or This PC: it shows by its letter until it answers
- A folder that's slow to read shows the busy bar instead of the previous folder's files
- Typed paths (address bar, Ctrl+K) are checked in the background, so an unreachable
\\server\sharedoesn't freeze anything - Drives in the sidebar and This PC follow USB sticks and cards as they're plugged in and pulled out
See ROADMAP.md for what's next.
Rift 0.7.0

The exe isn't signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn on the first start: "More info" → "Run anyway".
To add "Open in Rift" to Explorer's menu, turn it on in Settings (Ctrl+,) or run Rift.exe --register-shell.
New in 0.7
