Crow 1.0.0 is the first tagged release. The version number was held at 0.x until all of the following were true — each proven on a wiped scratch install, not asserted:

  • A newcomer reaches first value in under 30 minutes without help. The timed walkthrough: under 2 minutes of interaction after the installer finishes, zero terminal steps — ending in a chat reply from your own locally downloaded model that demonstrably recalls stored memories.
  • CI defines what is mergeable. The full test suite (2,600+ tests) runs on every PR and push to main; a red run blocks merge for everyone, the maintainer included (enforce_admins).
  • Every README claim is true on a fresh install, or explicitly labeled as planned.

What's in 1.0

  • Persistent memory + MCP platform — connect Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP clients to one private system of record: memory, projects, files, blog, sharing.
  • Model Catalog — curated local models with Hugging Face downloads, hardware-fit filtering, and a managed llama.cpp runtime. Local-first AI with no cloud key.
  • Bot Builder + bot engine — build permissioned agents in the dashboard and run them over Gmail, Discord, or voice (Meta glasses / companion). The agent engine installs as a one-click bundle at the point of use.
  • Encrypted P2P sharing & messaging — memories, projects, and messages between Crow instances over Nostr, end-to-end encrypted, no accounts, no central server.
  • Multi-instance sync — run Crow on several devices; contacts, groups, and settings follow you, proven by executable multi-instance tests.
  • Extensions — ~90 installable add-on bundles (official + community stores), themed collections, one-click installs.
  • First-run experience — one-line installer (Debian/Ubuntu/Raspberry Pi; Windows via WSL2; macOS via npm), first-run wizard with a local-AI free path, connect wizard for pairing AI clients.
  • Engineering floor — CI-gated merges, a runtime database-migration guard with automatic backup and quarantine, and fleet auto-update that refuses an unverified main.

Honest edges

  • Cloud web clients (claude.ai on the web, ChatGPT) can't reach a self-hosted private instance yet — a hardened opt-in path is the committed next arc, behind a dedicated security review.
  • Windows runs via WSL2 with CPU inference for now (CUDA-in-WSL2 enablement is filed).
  • The full roadmap, including what is deliberately parked, lives at docs/roadmap.md.
