v0.1.2 — Zotero 10.0.x support and Linux Agent fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@chenxixianming chenxixianming released this 27 Sep 19:27

Highlights

Zotero 10.0.x support is now included, together with fixes that make the Agent module usable on Linux x86_64. This is a prerelease for further compatibility testing.

What changed

  • Zotero 10 compatibility: extend the add-on installation range to Zotero 9.0.6–10.0.x.
  • Bundled Linux Agent runtime: ship the pinned official Codex 0.156.1 runtime for Linux x86_64 alongside macOS Apple Silicon. Linux no longer requires a separately installed Codex CLI or copies credentials from another client.
  • Proxy environment inheritance: forward HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY, ALL_PROXY, NO_PROXY and their lowercase forms from the Zotero process to Agent, while preserving its private runtime environment.
  • Consistent versioning: the release tag and the installed add-on version are both 0.1.2.

Compatibility

Component Supported / verified scope
Zotero Installation permitted on 9.0.6–10.0.x; Linux host checks performed on 10.0.3 for the preceding candidate.
Agent runtime Linux x86_64 and macOS Apple Silicon.
User verification Debian x86_64: Agent login and normal use confirmed for the preceding candidate.

macOS and Zotero 9 host checks were not repeated for this candidate. Chat and Agent retain separate login sessions.

Installation and proxy setup

  1. Download zotero-chatgpt-0.1.2.xpi from Assets below.
  2. Install it through Zotero’s add-on manager, then fully restart Zotero.
  3. Open Agent and complete its official sign-in flow.

If a proxy is required, launch Zotero from an environment containing the appropriate proxy variables. Desktop proxy settings alone may not populate them, and changing variables in a terminal does not affect an already running Zotero process. Proxy inheritance does not override service availability restrictions.

This prerelease uses manual installation; it does not configure an automatic update channel.

Validation

For the 0.1.2 package:

  • Build and artifact verification passed (88 packaged files).
  • Version/release and packaging tests: 11 passed.
  • File-by-file comparison with the user-tested package confirms that only the manifest version changed from 0.1.1 to 0.1.2; all other payload files are identical.

For the preceding 0.1.1 candidate with the same runtime code:

  • Typecheck, lint and 1533 unit tests passed (1 platform-specific skip).
  • 59/59 isolated Zotero 10.0.3 host checks passed, without model requests.
  • A Debian user confirmed successful Agent login and normal use after launching Zotero with proxy environment variables.

The 0.1.2 package has not been separately retested for live login, host behavior, upgrade/rollback, or individual native write/undo workflows.

Package integrity

  • Source commit: 7cb490d24174f6bb3830bb9fced182413a459179.
  • XPI size: 208,756,431 bytes.

Development status after v0.1.1 (2026-09-27)

This release asset and tag are unchanged. The repository's main branch has later, unreleased development changes. In the latest tested development XPI, the current embedded ChatGPT editor is not recognized, so automatic paper-context submission is blocked. See the versioned test record. The published XPI checksum remains in the SHA256SUMS asset below.

Linux x86_64 support

This release adds Agent support on Linux x86_64 using the installed Codex CLI.

Changes

  • Resolves Codex from CODEX_CLI_PATH, ~/.local/bin/codex, or PATH.
  • Uses the installed Codex app-server instead of the macOS bundled runtime on Linux.
  • Copies only the existing ~/.codex/auth.json login token into the plugin-owned runtime account.
  • Accepts semantic Codex versions reported by the Linux CLI, including Codex 0.155.1.
  • Keeps the macOS Apple Silicon bundled runtime and pinned 0.154.0 validation unchanged.
  • Keeps the existing private configuration and Chat/Agent separation unchanged.

Validation

  • Typecheck passed.
  • Lint passed.
  • Core/runtime regression tests passed.
  • Development XPI packaging and artifact verification passed.

The XPI is an unsigned development preview and requires Zotero 9.0.6.

v0.1.0 — first release

Choose a tag to compare

@kianmax0 kianmax0 released this 20 Sep 04:50

The first release of zotero-chatgpt — ChatGPT for your papers, without leaving Zotero.

What you get

Chat hosts the official chatgpt.com application inside the Zotero reader sidebar. The
conversation, composer, streaming, model picker, history and uploads are the real ChatGPT web app,
not a reimplementation. Chat needs no API key and uses no Codex quota; opening the sidebar,
reading a paper and switching papers start no Codex work at all.

Because the hosted page owns its own conversation, the sidebar adds only what the page cannot know —
the paper you have open — as two one-click clipboard actions:

  • Copy paper context — local bibliography only: title, authors, publication, year, DOI and the
    stored abstract.
  • Copy PDF file — the actual file, ready to paste into ChatGPT's own composer.

Automatic PDF context is on by default, is described before your first send, and can be turned off.

Agent handles work that changes your library, and it proposes rather than acts: nothing is
written until you review and approve it. Highlighting verifies the model's quoted passage against
the frozen PDF revision and requires a unique match before any native highlight is created, so
invented coordinates cannot reach your library. Organizing adds tags and collection memberships to
the regular items you selected. Getting an article resolves a DOI or public article URL and saves
restricted metadata, then attempts a lawful open-access PDF. Every write is preceded by an intent
record and followed by a readback, so a stop or a conflict can be told apart from a success and
undone.

The sidebar is one row: the mode switch, your paper, the two copy actions, then new chat, history
and more. Switching modes never stops work that is already running, each mode keeps its own draft,
focus and scroll, and the reader keeps Zotero's native dock, zoom, rotation and reading position.

Install

  1. Download zotero-chatgpt-0.1.0-dev.xpi below.
  2. In Zotero: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… and choose the file.
  3. Open a PDF, then open the sidebar.

Verify the download if you like:

Read this before installing

  • This build is unsigned. Zotero may warn about installing an unsigned add-on, and the add-on
cannot be signed for you by this project.
  • It carries no update channel, so Zotero will not offer updates. Moving to a later build means
installing it again, the same way.
  • macOS on Apple Silicon only. The bundled Codex runtime is a darwin/arm64 binary.
  • Agent is experimental. Fetching open-access PDFs from a DOI or article link is the least
settled part of it, and the Agent label in the sidebar does not change that.
  • The hosted ChatGPT page owns the conversation, so the plugin keeps only its local bindings,
drafts and settings — not a copy of your ChatGPT history.

Scope of verification for this artifact

dist/zotero-chatgpt-0.1.0-dev.xpi (92,760,736 bytes, 87 files,
sha256 31b0f4c5…3e4ac49) was checked with:

  • typecheck, lint, and the unit suite: 103 files, 1379 passing. (Two of those cases only run
once dist/ holds the current version's XPI, so they are skipped in a pre-packaging run and
    executed in the post-packaging one.)
  • A rebuild from a clean git ls-files export with a fresh npm ci, producing a byte-identical
    artifact.
  • verify:artifacts over the packaged file list.
  • The dedicated-profile, no-model host stage: 47/47.
  • A virgin install, and a two-version upgrade/rollback (0.1.0 → 0.4.0a34 → 0.1.0) confirming the
version, the runtime handshake, the signed-out state and the stored records survive both, and that
an older build refuses a newer-schema record without rewriting it.

Not run for this artifact: any real Codex model turn, a real ChatGPT submission, the native
highlight/acquire/organize flows end to end, and signing. The two modes were exercised as described
above, not end-to-end against the live services.
