0.13.0 - Task Details sidebar and three-pane mode
Task Details sidebar
A new sidebar (in the right sidebar by default; run Open Task Details sidebar to bring it back) that follows the task view in front:
- Today: today's hours. Drag a task from Today's list onto an hour to schedule it, drag it to another time, or click a time to add a task.
- Upcoming, or any view in its calendar layout: that view's tasks with no date, as a list (a project's, a tag's or a smart list's, through the view's filters). Drag one onto the calendar to schedule it, or drag a task into the list to clear its dates.
- A selected task: its details, editable in place: title, properties, notes and subtasks.
- Several selected tasks: Multiple Tasks, with each property showing the shared value (or Mixed) and editing all of them at once; the checkbox completes them together.
The sidebar shows one thing at a time: selecting a task gives it the whole sidebar, and Escape (or ×) brings back the hours, the list, or No task selected. While you drag a task, the hours or list come back so you can drop it.
Two or three panes
New Task details setting:
- Two panes (default): tasks open as before, as a card in the list (Things) or in the task editor (Griply).
- Three panes: tasks open only in the Task Details sidebar. Double-click or Enter shows a task there; new tasks open there too.
Phones and tablets always use three panes: tapping a task slides the sidebar in.
New tasks and cards
- A new task in a card or the sidebar is written to your note only once you give it a title and press Enter. Escape cancels it and writes nothing.
- In a card, Enter saves and closes (Shift+Enter starts a new line of notes), and Escape closes without saving your typing.
Views
- Each view (Inbox, Today, Upcoming, All Tasks, each project and tag) remembers its View options and its layout. Smart lists and the Projects list remember their layout.
- Convert to smart list at the bottom of View options saves the view's filters, sorting and grouping as a smart list of that view's tasks.
- The priority filter has a No priority option, and smart lists sit under All Tasks in the sidebar.
- On mobile, a single tap opens a task; swipe right to select.
- Boards hide completed tasks unless shown or filtered, as lists do.
- Redo: Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Ctrl+Y), the notice's Redo button, or Redo last undone task change.
Gantt
- Opens at January in the Year view, for an overview of the year. The arrows move by a month, quarter, year or five years.
- Zoom with the new buttons, the + and − keys, the mouse wheel over the dates, or Ctrl/Cmd+wheel (or a trackpad pinch) anywhere. Drag with the right mouse button to pan.
- The first month (or week) of each year is labelled with its year.
Recurring tasks
- Recurring tasks complete or cancel, in notes too:
- [-]advances a routine task like a checked one and logsCANCELEDin its routine note. The Skip and Fail commands are gone. - Routine-note tasks move their deadline along with their scheduled date.
Look and feel
- The Griply style is closer to Griply: countdown deadline pills, repeat and notes icons beside the title, dividers under group headings. It always lists subtasks as rows.
- Things style task cards use the main area's background.
- Dragging is smoother, headings make way like rows, and calendar drops show the same drop slot as lists.
- Folders in the sidebar are bold.
Removed
- Dashboard and Weekly Review views. Build your own with
task-queryblocks. - The calendar's Plan tasks panel and unscheduled tray. The Task Details sidebar lists tasks without a date instead.
- The Gantt's First project button.
Fixes
- Gantt arrows could move backwards, or too far, after scrolling the timeline by hand.
- Clicking outside a View options dropdown now closes it.
- Projects no longer flicker out of views right after a note is written.
- Closing the task editor with a property popover open no longer freezes Obsidian.
- The Tags list no longer shows "No tags yet" under its tags.
0.12.0 — A new sidebar, with your files and drag and drop
A new sidebar
- The sidebar is redesigned: coloured icons, open-task counts on Inbox, Today and tags, smart lists under All Tasks, and Projects (with subprojects you can fold) and Tags below.
- The toolbar has New task, New note and Task mode.
- New setting, Show files in sidebar: your vault's files and folders appear below Projects and Tags.
- Open notes from it, and fold folders (the sidebar remembers which are open).
- Right-click to open in a new tab or to the right, make a note or folder, rename in place, or delete.
- The toolbar adds New folder and Change sort order (by name, modified time or created time).
Drag and drop
- Drop tasks on the sidebar:
- Inbox, a project, or a note in the file tree moves them there.
- Today schedules them for today.
- A tag adds that tag.
- This works from lists, boards and the calendar, and with a selection.
- Files drag as they do in the file explorer: into a note as a link, onto a tab to open it, or onto a folder to move it.
Projects
- Task views list the projects they match among their tasks, each with its progress in place of a checkbox. Turn this off in View options › Show › Projects; each tab and smart list keeps its own setting.
- The calendar shows projects on their start date (or deadline). Drag one to another day to move its dates.
- A project whose tasks are all done (100%) is now Completed, not active:
- It leaves the sidebar, dashboard, weekly review and project choices.
- The Projects list and Gantt chart show it under Completed.
Smart lists
- A smart list's title has a … menu: Rename, Update View Options (saves the current filters, sorting, grouping and Projects setting), and Delete.
Improvements and fixes
- Back and Forward now step through task pages (projects, tags, lists, smart lists) as they do through notes.
- Boards follow the view's grouping: a project's sections, Today's Overdue and Today, Upcoming's dates, All Tasks' notes.
- Project names and dates show properly on boards, and double-clicking a calendar task opens the task editor.
- Page titles match the theme's note title style.
- The calendar's deadline flag is filled in.
- The Today view no longer has a summary under its title (the Dashboard keeps it).
0.11.0 - one way to edit tasks, properties in any order, and a better phone experience
Highlights
- One task modal. New and existing tasks now edit the same way, as a task card does. The field holds just the title, and the view's context (its tag, Today's or Upcoming's date, the project, or a group's value) shows on the property buttons. Pickers set values directly, and properties typed into the title set theirs. Nothing is written until you save. You can still type or paste several lines for a new task: they become its subtasks and notes.
- Properties in any order. Type them however they come to you, such as
do this tomorrow {sunday} 5m 9:30pm p2 #call. Saving from the editor or a card, or leaving an edited line in a note, puts them in order: date and time, duration, deadline, repeat, defer, priority, tags. - Notes show your text as you wrote it. With Task mode off, task properties are no longer replaced by labels and pills. Each is highlighted in its colour, as in a card's title, and tags keep Obsidian's own look. A date still written in words is highlighted too, before it's converted.
- Smoother Task mode. Project and tag notes open straight as their task view, without flashing as a note first. Back and Forward work across them. Tabs and headers show the right title (the project, tag, smart list or view name) instead of "Today".
Tasks and dates
- Several repeats on one task, such as
every monday every friday. The task moves to whichever comes first, and the repeat picker acceptsmonday, friday. - A time written apart from its date (
[[Oct 1]] every monday 21:30) now counts as the scheduled time. - Date words only count at the end of the title, with just properties after them. "Call mom tomorrow about dinner" stays as written, and so do "sun" in "Buy sun cream", "last Friday" and fractions like 5/10.
- Create new task now works wherever you are, in the open view's or note's context. It's also on the ribbon and the sidebar. The separate Insert task command is removed.
- Group and board column + buttons add a new card right in that group, with its value.
- The date picker is simpler: no Today, Tomorrow and Next week rows.
Things style
- A recurring task's checkbox is its repeat icon. It's coloured by priority, and clicking it completes the task.
- One mark after the title: a list icon for subtasks, another for notes, and a third for both.
- Dates and times read as text after a calendar icon, like the deadline, and an overdue date is red.
- Projects list:
- A date range's start and end each open their own picker.
- The parent project line is gone.
- Opening a card that's partly off-screen scrolls it into view.
- Colours: card tags use your theme's tag colours, and selected tasks use your theme's text-selection colour.
- Keyboard: Cmd/Ctrl+A selects every task in the view.
On phones
- Swipe right to select or deselect a task, and left to open its actions. Double-tap to open it. Press and hold a task, then drag it to move it.
- The task editor opens from the top of the screen, and popovers and menus open at the top too.
- An opened card scrolls so it sits just above the keyboard.
- Things rows show their dates below the title, and project rows show theirs below the name.
Fixes
- A new card's project button no longer overflows the card.
- A touch drag no longer cancels itself as it starts.
0.10.1 - Obsidian Scorecard Fixes
0.10.0: Things style, in-place task cards and action menus
A large release. There's a new Things style (now the default), tasks open as editable cards in place, and property modals are replaced by popovers and right-click menus. It also adds a weekly review, simple repeats, live task queries in notes, importing from the Tasks plugin, undo, and a much faster index.
Highlights
- Things style (Settings › Appearance › Style), now the default. If you chose Griply before, that choice is kept. Rows stay on one line: the star marks today's tasks, tags show as pills, a deadline reads "N days left", and the date box sits at the end. The Projects and Tags lists, project headers and Gantt labels match.
- Task cards. Double-click or press Enter to open a task as a card in place. You can edit the title and notes, work through subtasks as a checklist (Enter adds the next one), and add or change When, Tags, Priority, Repeat and Deadline. Typing into the title sets properties, for example
tomorrow 3pm p1 #[[tag]]. The card animates open and closed, and saves when you close it. - Action menus. Right-click a task, or press E, for Complete, dates, priority, Project, Deadline, Tags, Repeat, Snooze, Status, Duplicate and Delete. These apply to the whole selection. Projects have a similar menu from the "…" button or a right-click.
- Popovers instead of modals. Dates, times, durations and deadlines are edited in one natural-language field, with quick picks and a month calendar. Priority, project (search or create), tags, repeat, snooze and status also have their own popovers.
- Weekly Review view. It shows what you completed this week, what's overdue, routines that are behind, upcoming deadlines, stale tasks, projects without a next action, and someday tasks. You can mark each section as reviewed, and that progress is kept for the week.
New
- Undo for task changes. Snooze tasks with
>dateor>someday. - Simple repeats. A trailing rule such as
every weekmoves the task's dates forward in place when you complete it. - Optional completion dates (
✓date). A Completed date filter works in smart lists, and ✅ dates from the Tasks plugin are read too. - Task status, and a Status button in the editor.
- Task query blocks. A
task-querycode block lists matching tasks live in any note, in both Reading view and Live Preview. - Import from the Tasks plugin. Emoji and Dataview fields are converted, and you see a preview first. The whole import is one undoable change.
- Ignored folders, notes and tags. Tasks in them are left out of every view, query, count and the review.
- Project colours. They appear on source labels, board cards, Gantt bars, progress circles and the sidebar. The calendar can colour tasks by project and priority.
- Today header showing a completion circle, planned time, overdue count and a countdown to your next timed task.
- Quick switcher (Cmd/Ctrl+K) for views, projects, tags, lists and tasks.
- Redesigned view options. Sort and Group dropdowns and grouped filter rows, with relative date presets so smart lists stay current.
- Folding for subtasks and groups, which is saved with the view. Show subtasks is an option in task views.
- Tag format setting:
#tag(the default) or#[[tag]]. Convert notes rewrites existing task tags into the chosen format. - Compact density setting.
- Mobile: swipe to complete or snooze, and editors open as bottom sheets.
Selection & keyboard
- A click selects a task, Cmd/Ctrl+click toggles one, Shift+click selects a range, and a double-click opens the task.
- Keys that act on the selection: E actions, Shift+T today, D date, Shift+D deadline, P priority, T tags, G project, R repeat, S status, Shift+S snooze, C complete, M move.
- Cmd/Ctrl+C and Cmd/Ctrl+V copy and paste tasks as Markdown with their notes and subtasks. Cmd/Ctrl+D duplicates, and Delete removes. All of these can be undone.
- Up and Down move the selection. Each list is a single tab stop, and focus is visible throughout.
Drag and drop
- Dragging works like Things: the row lifts, a gap opens where it will land, and the row glides into place. Press Escape to cancel.
- You can drop tasks outside all headings, above a group heading, or between board columns that represent a note or section.
Task editor
- The title field is plain text, and the properties it sets are highlighted in their colours. The buttons below it show the task's current values and open the popovers.
- Parsing is better: a date and a time written apart, as in "tomorrow p1 3pm", combine into one schedule.
Performance
- The parsed index is saved between sessions (locally, not synced), so notes that haven't changed aren't re-read at startup. A new Rebuild task index command resets it.
- Tested on notes with up to 100k checklist items. Each note is parsed once per bulk operation, and rescans, calendar views and the navigation pane are lighter.
Fixes & safety
- Dates are converted only on task lines you edited, and only when the date is at the end. Block IDs, destinations and indentation are kept. When a task line is duplicated, the plugin refuses to guess which one to edit.
- Monthly and yearly repeats stay on their original day. Recurring tasks complete correctly from board drops and bulk edits.
- Task tabs follow notes that are renamed or deleted. Older iOS versions no longer break.
- Clicking a property on a card opens its popover. This includes Repeat, which used to open the edit modal.
Changed or removed
- Things is now the default style.
- The bulk "Edit task properties" modal and the project edit modal are replaced by the action menus.
- The
@date syntax is removed.[[links]]are read as dates only in your configured format or ISO. - The Link tags setting is replaced by Tag format.
- These settings are removed: task highlight on hover, title wrapping, subtask counts and group heading counts. Undo notices are now off by default.
0.9.6 - Hot Fix: Modals Refactor
- vertically align task content and checkbox
- caret in modals now follows theme's caret
0.9.5 - Cleaner task modals and inline editing
- Edit task text directly, with dates, priorities, projects, and tags rendered inline. Only the active token reveals its Markdown syntax.
- Match task-mode layouts: title, deadline, and priority above; schedule, project, and tags below.
- Show clickable checkboxes and familiar project markers.
- Press Enter to save or Shift+Enter to insert a line break.
0.9.4 - Clearer deadlines and simpler sidebar navigation
- Deadlines more than seven days away now use muted text across task, project, and note views. Upcoming deadlines remain orange, and overdue deadlines remain red.
- Smart lists now appear under All Tasks in the sidebar, replacing the separate Smart Lists section. Opening a smart list automatically expands All Tasks.
0.9.3 - Cleaner task views and improved project layouts
- Combined sorting, grouping, and filtering into one View options menu.
- Simplified toolbars with updated layout controls and icon buttons for creating tasks and projects.
- Removed task search and the “Search task in list” command.
- Removed ... task buttons and > project buttons.
- Displayed archived projects by default, with separate Active and Archived sections in list and Gantt views.
- Positioned project deadlines beside titles and improved project row alignment.
- Kept task titles and properties inline when Task Mode is off.
- Refined duration labels, dimmed description indicators, and removed accent colors from Task Mode headings.
- Updated today’s date in the monthly calendar to use red text without a background.
- Fixed task property clicks to open the editor with the selected property focused.
0.9.2 - Remove Redundant settings
- Remove "show task property" settings
- Remove "task height in list view" setting
