Snag 1.0.1

Fixes from the first day of testing, and Snag now updates itself: from this version on, a card in the corner offers each new release, and one click installs it.

Install

Download Snag-Setup.exe below (12 MB) and run it. It installs for your user only, no admin rights needed, and keeps your downloads and settings if you had 1.0.0.

Windows may say "Windows protected your PC" because the installer isn't code-signed yet: click More info → Run anyway. Check the file against SHA256SUMS-1.0.1.txt if you like.

Browser extension: open chrome://extensions (or edge://, brave://), turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and choose the browser-extension folder in Snag's install folder. Already loaded? Click its Reload button, then refresh open tabs.

What's new in 1.0.1

Fixed

• Dialogs no longer turn black after a while when Snag draws with the CPU (the default).
• Scrolling is about 3 times smoother with CPU drawing, and lists no longer leave trails behind.
• "Grab all" skips links you've already downloaded and says how many, instead of a popup for each.
• A "move to folder" rule says "copied" when the original file is in use and has to stay.
• Saved web pages no longer pack whole videos into the .html file.
• Links that differ only in "ref" or "share" count as different downloads outside YouTube.
• Pausing a page save no longer leaves a second copy behind.

Improved

• Snag updates itself: when a newer version is out, a card offers it, and Update now downloads it, checks it against its published checksum, installs it and reopens Snag. Switch it off in Settings → General.
• Report a bug → Report on GitHub opens a filled-in GitHub issue in your browser.
• Send from your phone uses its own code (the extension's never travels over Wi-Fi) and listens only on your home network.
• The browser extension is 1.0.1: steadier Download button, "Grab all" of more than 1,000 links, and links waiting for Snag never get stuck.

Snag 1.0.0

The first release of Snag, a fast, free download manager for Windows with a browser extension that catches videos the way IDM does.

Install

1. Download Snag-Setup-1.0.0.exe below (12 MB) and run it. It installs for your user only, so no admin rights are needed.
2. Windows may show "Windows protected your PC", because the installer isn't code-signed yet. Click More info → Run anyway. You can check the file against SHA256SUMS-1.0.0.txt.
3. Browser extension: until it's in the stores, open chrome://extensions (or edge://, brave://), turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and choose the browser-extension folder inside Snag's install folder. Then click the Snag icon → Connect to Snag → Allow.

Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). Mac and Linux are coming.

Downloads

• Big files over up to 8 connections at once, with pause and resume, even after a restart.
• Video and music from 1,800+ sites (YouTube and more): choose 1080p, 720p or MP3, whole playlists, subtitles, live recordings.
• Image galleries, torrents and magnet links, whole web pages saved as one file, GitHub repos as ZIP.
• Rules after download: convert to MP3, shrink videos, unpack archives, move files.
• An optional VirusTotal check for programs you download (only a fingerprint is sent).
• "Already downloaded" warnings, automatic retries, and a fix for streams disguised as images.

Browser extension

• A Download button on video pages with a quality menu. What the player is already playing starts instantly.
• Grab all links and pictures on a page; right-click to send a picture, a link or the page.
• Links sent while Snag is closed wait and go through when it opens.

The app

• Clipboard watch, queues and schedules, a speed limit, sending from your phone, watched channels.
• Stats, grid view, a live speed graph, light and dark themes, any accent colour, a right-click menu.
• About 35 MB of memory: the window is drawn by the CPU, so your graphics card stays asleep.

Privacy

No account, no analytics, no server of our own. Everything stays on your PC, and the extension only talks to Snag on 127.0.0.1 after you allow it.
