This repository is made for providing VMware host modules (namely vmmon and vmnet) patched for use in newer Linux kernel versions.
Warning
The patched vmnet module bricks lshw's network probation. One solution is to pass -disable network as a parameter to lshw if you have nothing to do with networking. See this bug report in Ubuntu Launchpad for more info.
Because I use Fedora and I need VMware Workstation for virtual machine shenanigans. Because there's no repo that provides such a thing (yet) (not counting AUR since you still need to figure out where to find the modules to patch), I had to make my own for ease.
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/kurtbahartr/vmware-host-modules -b workstation-<version> --depth=1
Make sure you fill the <version> placeholder with your exact VMware Workstation Pro version. Such as 17.6.4.
Note
If you use a version of Workstation that's not yet added to this repository, you can simply run the extract-and-patch-modules.sh script and let it handle the preparation for you. It would be much appreciated if you could also create a PR while at it.
Build the kernel modules:
make
Warning
If the build fails, it means your kernel is either too new or too old for this to compile. Please create an issue on this repository if this happens so that I can look into it and add new patches.
Install the kernel modules:
sudo make install
- Broadcom for VMware Workstation Pro for Linux.
- @mkubecek for his work for the same.
- @julianxhokaxhiu for maintaining
vmware-workstationAUR package. This repo would be impossible without his PKGBUILD and included patches.
