Flashback 1.31.3

@kuzteen kuzteen released this 09 Oct 07:49

Flashback 1.31.3 fixes video encoder selection on systems with multiple graphics adapters or registered encoders.

  • Auto selects H.264 hardware encoders associated with the capture GPU.
  • If the hardware encoder fails to initialize, Auto falls back to software so recording can proceed.
  • Settings indicate when a manual encoder preference is unavailable for the capture GPU, instead of selecting another manufacturer.
  • Adds initialization and runtime diagnostics while avoiding repeated initialization messages during retries.

Fixes

  • Shortcuts survive a shell restart: restarting Windows Explorer (from Task Manager, after a crash, or after some updates) left the save, record and open shortcuts dead until Flashback was restarted. Windows drops them without a word when Explorer comes back; now Flashback notices and registers them again on its own.

Fixes

  • Reset really resets the clip: "Reset edit" restored the cuts but kept your volume, framing and image adjustments, so a clip stayed flagged as edited and kept playing with the settings you had just undone. Now it goes back to the original from end to end, and the clip loses its "edited" badge as soon as it does.
  • Renaming tells you what went wrong: picking a name that is already taken closed the dialog as if it had worked, with nothing on screen to explain it. The reason now appears under the name field and the dialog stays open until you pick another one.
  • The exported badge follows the clip, not its name: the little crop mark was decided by the _edit in the file name, so renaming a clip by hand added one and renaming an export took it away. It is now remembered from the export itself.
  • The library no longer refuses to open: if two clips in your folders shared a name, for example an original and a copy you had edited, the grid received the same key twice and the list stopped rendering. Clips are now told apart by their path.

Also

  • Renaming a clip moves along with it the label that says it came from an edit, the same way its game and cover already did.

Discord Rich Presence

  • The timer follows what you are doing: it starts again whenever you start a game, switch to another one or go back to the library, instead of counting from when Flashback was opened.
  • Your game takes the card: while Flashback is capturing a game, the card shows its artwork with the Flashback logo in the corner, and reads "Valorant with Flashback" (or whatever you are playing), with "Clipping every play" or "Recording gameplay" below. Discord's member list shows it as "Playing Valorant with Flashback".
  • Cleaner library card: in the library the card shows only the Flashback logo, without the small icon.
  • New buttons: "Get Flashback" and "Need help?", which opens the Flashback support server on Discord. Discord only shows them to other people, not on your own profile.

Lighter Instant Replay

  • The replay buffer now uses far less memory: the quality levels were recalibrated, so the same clip takes much less space. At 1080p60 on High (the default), a 5 minute replay now keeps about 750 MB in memory instead of about 1.9 GB, and saved clips are smaller in the same proportion. At 1080p60 the levels are now about 8 (Low), 12 (Medium), 20 (High), 30 (Very high) and 50 Mbps (Ultra). If you want the old High back, pick Ultra.

Audio

  • New "Game and apps" preset: records the game, Discord and Spotify, each on its own track, with nothing to set up. The microphone keeps its own track as always.
  • "Custom" is the old "Game and apps": pick exactly which apps are heard in your clips. If you were already using it, your list is kept.

Fixes

  • No more false "in use by another app" warnings when you change a hotkey: reassigning a shortcut could make Flashback collide with its own registration, so the record and open hotkeys showed up in red even though no other app was using them. Registration is now done one step at a time.

Hotkeys that work in League of Legends

  • Clip hotkeys now reach you inside games that block them: some games, League of Legends with Vanguard among them, stop Windows from delivering global hotkeys to other apps. While a game is detected or the replay is running, Flashback now also reads the keyboard state directly, so the save, record and open hotkeys keep working. Outside a game nothing extra runs.
  • The conflict warning no longer disappears: when another app already owns one of your hotkeys, the "ready to clip" notice used to cover the warning and still announced a key that could not work. Now the warning stays, and it is shown again in place of "ready" while the save hotkey is unavailable.

Detection

  • The League client counts as the game: champion select and the lobby are now recognized as League of Legends, and the replay follows you into the match on its own.

Backgrounds

  • Game backgrounds now load for every game: games outside Steam and the Microsoft Store, like League of Legends, Valorant or Minecraft, had no background at all. Releases now include the keys they need to fetch one.

Every sound on its own track

  • Separate tracks in every clip: each clip now keeps the game, your apps and your microphone on their own audio tracks, plus a mix of everything as the first track. Discord, WhatsApp or any player play the mix, so a clip always sounds complete when you send it, and your voice is now heard outside Flashback too.
  • Adjust each source in the editor: every track gets its own lane with its app or game icon, volume and mute. When you export, everything is mixed into a single track. If you don't touch any volume, the mix is copied as is, without re-encoding.
  • Record only what you choose (Windows 11): in Settings > Capture > Audio, switch to "Game and apps" and add the apps you want in your clips, like Discord PTB or your music player. Anything not on the list stays out: a private call in another Discord won't end up in your clip. The detected game is always included and shows with its name and icon.
  • Apps can be picked from the ones playing audio right now, or by browsing for the program. Apps that open, close or restart while you play are picked up on their own.

Better sync

  • Microphone and system audio stay in sync with the video: they now follow the same clock as the video instead of the audio device's own clock, which could drift up to about 20 ms per minute.
  • Saving a replay right after it starts no longer shifts the audio.

Editor

  • Each lane can have its own color: right-click a block and pick one. New lanes start with the system audio color.
  • A new playhead handle, with the line starting right below it.
  • App icons stay in the editor even after you remove an app from your list.

Also

  • Changing the audio mode or the app list restarts the Instant Replay, since the clip's tracks are set when it starts.

Lighter capture

  • Less graphics memory while you play: Flashback now converts each captured frame straight to the video format and size the encoder needs, in a single step on the GPU. The replay buffer's GPU memory drops by more than half (on an RTX 3060 at 1080p: from about 280 MB to about 110 MB, and to about 65 MB when recording at 720p), so games keep more VRAM for themselves.
  • Less GPU work: the capture uses about 40% less of the GPU's 3D engine. Colors and image are exactly the same as before.
  • If your graphics driver can't do the new conversion, Flashback falls back to the previous one on its own.

Also

  • Checking for keyframes no longer reads every frame from start to end.
  • Audio skips an extra copy of each block when no channel mixing is needed.
  • The app download is a little smaller: the save sound was bundled twice.
