hivedesk 1.0.1

hivedesk 1.0.1. Downloading a model works in the desktop app again: the app brings its own npm for the local runtime, and a user folder with spaces in its name no longer breaks the install. When something still fails, the message says why. A phone that connects now shows the real computer name instead of null.

hivedesk 1.0.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 03:22

Watch the hivedesk 1.0 launch film

Your agents. Your machines. Your City.

hivedesk 1.0 is a peer to peer environment where AI agents, people and machines work together as one City. A crew of agents plans, writes, reviews and tests real projects on your computer with a local model, no account and no API key, and can think on a friend's GPU or CPU when they allow it.

Download

System File
Windows hivedesk-setup.exe (small online installer, no admin) or hivedesk-setup-offline.exe
macOS hivedesk-macos.dmg (Apple Silicon and Intel)
Linux hivedesk-linux-x86_64.AppImage, the .deb, the .rpm, or sh hivedesk-linux-install.sh
Any system with Node.js 20+ npx hivedesk

The installers are not signed with paid certificates, so Windows SmartScreen and macOS Gatekeeper ask once on the first launch. See desktop/README.md. Every app file is listed in SHA256SUMS.txt, and installed apps update themselves from the signed latest.json.

The launch film is attached too: hivedesk-1.0-film-1080p.mp4 (16:9), hivedesk-1.0-film-4x5.mp4 (4:5), the covers and the Portuguese captions.

What is new in 1.0

  • P2P with friends: Ed25519 identities, six word invites, check words on both screens and an explicit accept. Grants are off by default, expire, revoke at once and land in a hash chained audit log.
  • Share GPU and CPU: a friend's machine runs inference jobs with a lease, limits, cancel and revoke. A whole crew job can think there; every write or run from there waits for your approval. Pooled giant models across friends' machines are experimental and off by default.
  • Models: 57 models with quantized variants, a hardware check, consent before any download, automatic model rotation per role and task, GPU or CPU only.
  • Every kind of project: web, mobile (PWA plus Capacitor), desktop, API, CLI, browser extension, game and data, with specialists, clarifying question cards with options, a read only security audit mode and 672 playbooks.
  • Remote desktop with a 10 digit address, an accept dialog, a red Stop button, clipboard and file send, and key pinning. Phone remote by QR. Voice mode with speech to text on your PC and every action read back first.
  • Workbench with editor, terminal, source control and GitHub; installers for the three systems with signed automatic updates; a local profile; a more serious 1.0 design; 10 languages.
  • Security: a full review before release, with every finding fixed. See SECURITY.md.

Honest limits

A small local model does small and medium projects well. A giant model split across PCs over the internet works but is slow. On macOS, remote desktop is view only for now. Many features need the desktop app; a browser tab does less (the table on the site says what).

Em português: o hivedesk 1.0 é uma equipe de agentes de IA que roda no seu computador, com modelo local e sem conta, e pode usar a GPU ou a CPU de um amigo com permissão. hivedesk 0.2.1 (security)

@kwy404 kwy404 released this 17 Oct 22:23

A security update. Please update with npx hivedesk@latest or download the new desktop build below.

A security update for Code together, Lend your PC, Hive City, --demo and extensions. Please update.

  • Guest roles are checked by the engine itself, not only by the host's browser. Every guest command carries the guest's role; a missing role counts as a viewer. A viewer can read and chat; a collaborator can also post tasks and jobs, edit files under the host's approval and bring a building into the city. Hiring agents, changing an agent's tools, rooms, settings, models and providers stay with the host.
  • A building in the city can use only a model its owner lends itself. The host's own models, cloud brains and other guests' models can no longer be tied to a guest's building.
  • A guest's agents join with read and check tools only. Only the host can grant more tools, and an agent from an older version that still holds write tools comes back with the safe set.
  • Work that does not come from the person at this PC always waits for the host's answer, even with approval mode off: writes and saves from a guest (new files included), and every write, run or package script of a task whose model turns ran on a friend's machine. The approval card says where the action comes from, npm run and npm test show the script they would run, turning approval mode off does not approve these, and a guest cannot answer them.
  • Lend your PC: Cancel now stops the model on the lender. Each pairing is a lease with a maximum duration and number of turns (60 minutes and 200 turns by default) that expires on its own. Lent turns run only on the lender's local models: never on a model the lender itself borrowed, and never on the lender's cloud keys unless the lender allows it for that pairing. A model allowlist can be set per pairing (lend.grant). The older brain.chat entry goes through the same checks, and very deep or very large remote schemas are refused.
  • --demo runs in a temporary folder with its own home, never in a real project: a non empty --dir is refused, --demo-dir <folder> picks a folder on purpose, and a folder that holds a real hivedesk log is always refused. A demo run in a folder no longer labels later real runs as Demo.
  • Extensions: each extension runs in its own sandbox process, and the engine knows which extension is calling from the process it started, not from what the process says.

hivedesk 0.2.0: Hive City

Choose a tag to compare

@kwy404 kwy404 released this 17 Oct 07:44

hivedesk 0.2.0: Hive City. The office becomes a small city of persistent AI agents with rooms, a task pipeline (Design, Code, Review, Test), friends' computers as buildings joined by six words and GPU borrowing across the bridge. Everything from 0.1 is included.

macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) hivedesk-macos-universal.zip
Linux (x64) hivedesk-linux-x64.tar.gz or hivedesk-linux-x86_64.AppImage

The files are attached below a few minutes after this release is created, together with SHA256SUMS.txt. They are not signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen and macOS Gatekeeper ask for a confirmation on first launch: the steps are in desktop/README.md.

Or run it with Node.js 20 or newer

npx hivedesk

What is inside 0.1.0

  • An interactive first run: hardware check, the right open source model for your GPU or CPU, a local runtime you already use, or your own API key for a cloud model.
  • Mel turns your request into an improved brief, the crew plans, writes files with diffs, runs checks and fixes, and you approve each step. Every job ends with a report and an improved prompt.
  • The Hive desktop and an animated office, a pop out widget, ten languages, a guided tour, voice mode that asks before acting, themes and extensions.
  • Code together with friends by six words, a QR code or a link, with a code editor, live cursors and roles.
  • Connect GitHub to create repositories, commit, push and open pull requests, always after your confirmation, plus a changelog.
  • Session memory that stays on your machine.

Limits, plainly: a small local model handles small and medium tasks best, the workers take turns on one model, and the first run downloads a model of 1 to 5 GB. Details on the website.
