MCP Relay now runs on macOS, alongside Windows and Linux. The Server/Client relay contract is unchanged from 0.1.0.

Highlights

  • macOS support: the one-line installer accepts macOS, and CI runs the unit and end-to-end tests on macOS. (#6)

Changes

  • The one-line installers install MCP Relay from PyPI instead of a source archive. MCP_RELAY_VERSION pins a release; MCP_RELAY_REF, MCP_RELAY_REF_KIND, MCP_RELAY_PYTHON_VERSION and MCP_RELAY_ARCHIVE_SOURCE are removed. (60b6817)
  • relay_status and relay_registry_search tell MCP clients when to use each one and are marked read-only; every relay_registry_search argument is described. (#5)

Bug fixes

  • Windows: the Relay Server refuses to share its listener ports with another process. Before, a port collision went undetected. (a88482c)

Documentation

  • Shorter README, and a new deployment guide for proxy routing, Docker and the one-computer setup. (#7)

Upgrading

uv tool upgrade mcp-relay

Docker: ghcr.io/kxlion/mcp-relay:0.1.1.

v0.1.0

@kxlion kxlion released this 29 Sep 09:08

First public release of MCP Relay: use the MCP servers on your computer from a cloud AI agent, through one authenticated endpoint and an outbound connection only.

This is an alpha (0.x). Configuration and the Server/Client relay contract may still change between minor versions; changes will be listed in the release notes.

Highlights

  • One remote MCP endpoint (/mcp, Streamable HTTP, bearer token) in front of the MCP servers you choose on your computer.
  • No inbound port on your computer: the local Client opens an authenticated WebSocket to the Server and reconnects automatically.
  • Native tools: each local server's tools appear directly in your AI's tool list as <alias>_<tool>, with their own descriptions and schemas. The list updates when servers start, stop or change.
  • stdio and Streamable HTTP servers, declared with command, url or a registry source.
  • Per-server tools: allowlist with optional description overrides; a tool left out cannot be called through the relay.
  • relay_status reports the Server, the Client and every local server in one call.
  • Optional remote administration (relay_mcp_add, _modify, _delete, _enable, _disable), off unless the Client sets admin: true.
  • Guided setup with mcp-relay onboard, plus config show / get / set / unset / validate.
  • Windows and Linux, Python 3.14+.

Install

uv tool install mcp-relay

Or with the one-line installers, pinned to this release:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kxlion/mcp-relay/main/scripts/install.sh | MCP_RELAY_VERSION=0.1.0 bash

Or run the Relay Server from its Docker image:

docker pull ghcr.io/kxlion/mcp-relay:0.1.0

Then follow Get started.

Known limits

  • One Relay Server, one Relay Client, one user and one computer.
  • MCP Relay does not provide hosting, DNS or TLS: put the Server behind a TLS reverse proxy or a secure tunnel.
  • It does not bundle or guarantee any particular MCP server.
