Midtown Madness 3 PC 2.0 beta 2

Choose a tag to compare

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 26 Oct 22:55

Download MM3-Setup.exe below and run it. You need your own copy of the Xbox game (the Europe disc image). Your saves and settings are kept when you install over an older version.

What's new in 2.0 beta 2

  • Two mods tabs in the launcher, each starting with a choice:
    • Visual + audio mods: the Original look (the Xbox visuals, camera, menus and HUD) or the Improved look (the default), with each visual mod on its own switch. Nothing on this tab changes the gameplay.
    • Gameplay mods: Xbox gameplay (the default) plays as the Xbox game did. Modded gameplay adds the gameplay mods (circuits, extra cars, falling trees, drafting, rollover assist, route line, improved minimap), each with its own switch.
  • Xbox gameplay is now stock:
    • Checkpoint rivals drive Xbox cars again. Before, the installer's extra cars could be picked as a class's "best car", so a Koenigsegg race's rival drove a Regera.
    • Slipstream drafting and the rollover assist are off by default. They are turned off once in existing settings.
    • The Original look keeps the Xbox chase camera distance.
  • Wreck jobs: every hit now counts as it does on the Xbox at 60 fps, including hits found between two frames.
  • Exhaust smoke from the right car: traffic driving alongside no longer gives your car a second, misplaced exhaust.
  • Minimap compass pins: "Hide the minimap compass pins" now hides all four pins on the round map, not only the N. The three dashes around the map are gone.
  • Quit in the main menu: Quit replaces the Sign In row and closes the game. It has its own switch on the Visual + audio mods tab, and the Original look keeps Sign In.

Known quirks:

  • In the Original look, the profile's car count still includes the cars added with Car Workshop (for example "Cars: 50/46").
  • The profile's Checkpoint count includes the 10 circuit races per city ("Checkpoint: 12/30").

Note: MM3-Setup.exe is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen or Smart App Control may warn about it or block it. Check the download against MM3-Setup.exe.sha256.

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 26 Oct 05:34

Download MM3-Setup.exe below and run it. You need your own copy of the Xbox game (the Europe disc image). Your saves and settings are kept when you install over an older version.

What's new in 2.0 beta 1

  • Realistic exhaust smoke replaces the triangle exhaust (Mods tab, Exhaust smoke, off by default):
    • It comes out of each car's real exhaust pipes: twin, quad or centre pipes, cars, vans, buses and trucks alike. Where the original artists left exhaust markers in a car model, those are used. Other models use their exhaust pipe parts, or the rear of the body under the bumper.
    • It is soft grey smoke, not shapes: a light haze when standing still, and more of it, leaving the pipe faster, the faster a car goes and the harder it accelerates.
    • The smoke is carried a little in the car's wake, then slows, rises, swirls, spreads and thins out until it is gone.
    • Car shadows are no longer painted onto the smoke, and it fades softly where it meets the road.
  • Checkpoint no longer shows the circuit races: their pictures appeared after the downloadable races. They stay in Circuit mode.
  • Launcher: when the Original game is chosen, the distance and minimap settings are greyed out, because the Xbox values are used.
  • GitHub page: new sections on changing graphics settings in each version, and on editing the extra cars with Car Workshop.

Two ways to play

Open the launcher's Mods tab and pick one:

  • Original game: Midtown Madness 3 as it was on the Xbox, running natively at your resolution, with the graphics and audio upgrades only.
  • Improved game (the default): the same, plus the mods, each with its own switch:
    • Visuals: longer view distance, better car lights, street lamps and night lighting, lamp flares hidden behind buildings, a route line on the map, an in-game Graphics Settings menu, and exhaust smoke.
    • Gameplay: 20 extra circuit races, the extra cars, names and pictures for the DLC races, falling trees, slipstream drafting, rollover assist, and AI opponents in DLC and extra cars.

Both versions include widescreen, anti-aliasing, the accurate Xbox sound processor, controller vibration, keyboard controls, System Link, and the fixes from 2.0 beta 0. Those fixes cover the post-race menu, car damage at 60 fps, rain, Spanish voices and the Spanish Paris police.

Known quirk: in the Original game, the profile's car count still includes the cars added with the Car Workshop (for example "Cars: 50/46").

Note: MM3-Setup.exe is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen or Smart App Control may warn about it or block it. Check the download against MM3-Setup.exe.sha256.

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 26 Oct 03:05

Download MM3-Setup.exe below and run it. You need your own copy of the Xbox game (the Europe disc image).

This is a beta: the first build with the new Original / Improved choice. Please report anything that looks or sounds wrong.

Two ways to play

Open the launcher's Mods tab and pick one:

  • Original game: Midtown Madness 3 as it was on the Xbox, running natively on your PC. You get the graphics and audio upgrades, but none of the mods: no new lighting, cars, races, menus or driving changes.
  • Improved game (the default): the same game, plus the mods listed below. You can switch each one on or off.

The launcher title now shows the version (2.0 beta 0), so you can tell which build you have.

The original game, done better

These apply in both modes:

  • Native PC rendering: your monitor's resolution and aspect ratio (widescreen with a correctly placed HUD), up to 60 fps, anti-aliasing, sharper textures, a smooth skyline and depth fog.
  • Accurate audio: the Xbox sound processor runs natively (reverb, 3D sound, mixing).
  • Controllers and keyboard: Xbox and PlayStation (DualSense) controllers, vibration, keyboard and mouse bindings, up to four players.
  • System Link multiplayer between PCs.
  • Fixes:
    • Races always end with the post-race menu.
    • Car damage at 60 fps counts as on the console, in every job.
    • Rain is clearly visible.
    • Rainy streets have their haze, and trees no longer turn white.
    • The HUD no longer shrinks under trees.
  • Language fixes:
    • In Spanish, the main missions are now dubbed in Spanish; Angelina and the others spoke English.
    • In Spanish, the Paris police now speak Spanish. On the original Xbox disc they spoke Italian.
    • Your language choice is remembered.

Mods (Improved game)

Each mod has its own switch in the launcher.

Visuals

  • Longer view distance (buildings and detail further out)
  • Improved car lights: headlight beams on the road, glowing tail and brake lights
  • Improved street lamps, including tunnels and underpasses
  • Improved world lighting at night
  • Lamp flares hide behind buildings and cars
  • Loading animation
  • Route line on the map
  • North marker and race arrow (off by default, as most players prefer)
  • New: In-game Graphics menu: change resolution, quality and HUD from the game's own menus
  • New: Triangle exhaust (off by default). Cars puff little triangles from their exhausts, more and faster the faster they go. Each one drifts, grows and fades away.

Gameplay

  • Extra circuit races: 20 lap races through Washington DC and Paris, in five languages
  • Extra installed cars, the ones you add with Setup's Car Workshop
  • New: DLC race names and pictures. The downloadable Blitz and Checkpoint races get real names, descriptions and course pictures in your language.
  • Trees fall over when hit
  • Slipstream drafting
  • Rollover assist
  • AI opponents in DLC and extra cars

New in 2.0 beta 0

  • The Original / Improved choice, with the mods laid out by type.
  • Spanish voices in the main missions, and Spanish police in Paris.
  • DLC race names, descriptions and pictures.
  • In-game Graphics menu and extra circuits can each be switched off.
  • Triangle exhaust mod.
  • Rain, rain haze, white trees, tunnel lighting and HUD fixes.
  • Car damage counts in every job.
  • The version is shown in the launcher.

Known quirk: in the Original game the profile's car count still includes the cars added with the Car Workshop (for example "Cars: 50/46").

Races not finishing? Check the launcher title says 2.0. Older versions (before 1.7) could miss the post-race menu. In circuit races, checkpoints must be passed in order: if you miss one, the game says which one, and you need to go back for it.

Note: MM3-Setup.exe is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen or Smart App Control may warn about it or block it. Check the download against MM3-Setup.exe.sha256.

Midtown Madness 3 Setup 1.7

Choose a tag to compare

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 24 Oct 08:12

Download MM3-Setup.exe below and run it. You need your own copy of the Xbox game (Europe disc image); see the README.

What's new in 1.7

Fixes

  • Post-race menu: after some circuit and checkpoint races (for example losing to an opponent in the second race of a session) the results screen and the post-race menu never appeared, or the game crashed. A piece of the original game's text-drawing code had never been translated; it is translated now. Tested by replaying the exact sequence that failed.
  • Two more untranslated pieces of game code, in a menu and in the race camera, are translated.

New

  • Controller vibration: the game's own rumble now reaches your controller (Xbox controllers directly, PlayStation controllers through Steam Input). Turn it off with the game's vibration option.
  • Circuit races: one rival now drives a car from a much faster class, and opponents can use the DLC and extra cars (launcher Mods tab, on by default). Opponents no longer brake at junctions blocked by containers or on straights when their catch-up boost ends. A skipped gate now shows "CHECKPOINT n MISSED - GO BACK".
  • Driving: slipstream when following close behind another car, and a rollover assist for the cars that flipped in hard corners. Both can be turned off on the Mods tab.

Performance

  • About 2,000 maths-heavy game functions run 1.4-1.8x faster, checked function by function against the original translation.

Note: MM3-Setup.exe is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen or Smart App Control may warn about or block it. Check the download against MM3-Setup.exe.sha256.

Midtown Madness 3 Setup 1.6

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 23 Oct 06:48

Test build. Setup 1.5 stays the recommended download until this one has been played through. Your saves are kept, and you can go back by running Setup 1.5 again.

New

  • Circuit races: ten lapped circuit races in each city, under their own Circuit button. The last ones are long night tours on the highways (Washington's outer ring, the Paris Peripherique).
    • Opponents follow Midtown Madness 1-style paths.
    • Side roads are closed with a single row of containers.
  • Route line on the map: a launcher toggle (Mods tab) for the route drawn on the race map. It is on by default.
  • Car Workshop: Setup now points to the car toolkit, which edits the extra cars' names, ratings, handling, speedometers and bodies (tools/car-mods, needs Python 3).
  • Console saves reported as damaged: tools/saves/resign_save.py re-signs them for this port. The save data itself is unchanged.

Faster

  • The game's own recompiled code runs about a quarter fewer instructions, with identical results.
  • The sound processor runs its programs as compiled blocks. It matches the original byte for byte.
  • Texture checks skip textures the game hasn't changed. Set RECOMP_TEXTURE_WATCH=0 to turn this off, or RECOMP_TEXTURE_WATCH_VERIFY=1 to check it.

Fixed

  • Trees use the same distance fog as the rest of the world, instead of turning grey early (for example in Paris, Downtown Collapse).
  • Pressing Play on the launcher with a controller hands control to the game window.
  • Circuit opponents no longer get lost under covered sections of the Paris ring road.

Known

  • The "wreck the van" jobs (Paris career, Inga's van) are much harder at 60 fps than at 30 fps. This build logs every car-to-car hit ([MM3_DAMAGE] lines in logs/last-run.log) so the damage can be made frame-rate independent. Until then, setting the FPS limit to 30 (F10) for that job works around it.

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 21 Oct 20:36

Download MM3-Setup.exe, run it, and choose your Midtown Madness 3 Xbox disc image. To update an earlier install, run it again with the same install folder. Your saves in game_files are kept.

Faster in busy streets

The game is now built with profile-guided optimisation. It was compiled after a real play session to learn which code the game uses most, and that code was arranged to run faster. Graphics, physics and gameplay are exactly the same.

On the test laptop (RTX 2000 Ada, 60 fps cap), the densest Washington streets used to drop to 47–55 fps. They now hold 59.6–60 fps, and every frame has 3.5–5 ms of spare time. Outside loading screens, frames that take longer than 20 ms are now rare (about 0.3%).

Everything from Setup 1.4 is included: the sound and pizza-job fixes, screen selection in the launcher, and the street, tunnel and car light fixes.

Checksum: MM3-Setup.exe.sha256 (SHA-256).

Midtown Madness 3 Setup 1.4

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 21 Oct 17:02

Download MM3-Setup.exe, run it, and choose your Midtown Madness 3 Xbox disc image. To update an earlier install, run it again with the same install folder. Your saves in game_files are kept.

Fixes

  • Sound no longer cuts out after crashes. Car sounds, and then all audio, used to drop out one by one after collisions.
  • Pizza job 1 no longer hangs on "last pizza delivered". The Next race menu shows and Escape works again.
  • Missing lamps are back. Some street, road and tunnel lights stayed dark, and in busy night scenes lamps and your own tail lights blinked. The game's lamp-glow list now holds 1024 glows a frame instead of the Xbox's 256.
  • Evening street lamps now light the road. Their pools are smaller than at night but no longer stop short of the ground.
  • Headlights off means a dark car. Switching your headlights off (LB/L1 or Q) now also turns off the tail lights, at any time of day.
  • Reversing in daylight now shows a lit lens instead of a lamp-like glow on the road.

New

  • Screen choice in the launcher: pick the display the game opens on. Windowed and fullscreen both use that display.

Checksum: MM3-Setup.exe.sha256 (SHA-256).

MM3 Setup 1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 21 Oct 09:10

Setup 1.3 is Setup 1.2 plus a diagnostic for mission pickups. Installing works as before: download MM3-Setup.exe below, run it, pick your own Xbox disc image (and optionally your DLC ZIP or folder), choose your options and Install. To update an existing install, run it and choose the same install folder; your game files, saves and DLC are kept.

What's new since 1.2

  • Mission zones: if the green pickup zones of a mission don't count, the game's log now records why: how many zones are active, each time your car is inside one, and whether the game was checking zones at that moment. This is for issue #2 (Paris "Go for the gold"). If it happens to you, attach logs\last-run.log from the install folder to that issue.
  • Readme: the Xbox-Scene mirror of the community DLC installer pack is listed next to the Digiex one, and the launcher's controller remapping is described: in Controls, any pad button or trigger can stand in for any Xbox button.

Everything from Setup 1.2 is included: the audio fixes for lower frame rates, the midday flicker fix, lighting, map and launcher updates.

Validation: the new log has its own tests, including one against the game's real code. Command-line installs on the test PC from the Europe/Australia disc with DLC and the extra cars passed, both a fresh install and a reinstall over it that kept an existing save. The game was not started from those test installs.

Windows 10/11 x64, Direct3D 11 GPU and about 6 GB free space are required. You must already own the original Xbox game. Ownership does not automatically authorize third-party downloads or redistribution; see ownership, source links and legal-use guidance.

MM3 Setup 1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 21 Oct 08:39

Setup 1.2 installs the current native game build, with every fix since Setup 1.1, including the audio problems reported at lower frame rates. It bundles the game and its required Visual C++ runtime; no Python or build tools are needed on the target PC.

  1. Download MM3-Setup.exe below and run it.
  2. Browse to your lawfully obtained Europe/Australia multilingual or USA Xbox ISO/XISO.
  3. Optionally choose MidtownMadness3DLC.zip or an extracted DLC folder that you are entitled to use.
  4. Choose the optional nine community cars and graphics improvements, choose an install folder, then Install and Play now.

Updating an existing install: run Setup 1.2 and choose the same install folder. It replaces the game program and keeps your game files, saves and DLC; the disc is not extracted again.

What's new since 1.1

  • Audio:
    • Fixed audio that sounded wrong or broke up, especially below 60 FPS: the game's audio engine clock ran far too fast.
    • Output now keeps a larger buffer whenever it runs short.
    • With Accurate sound processor off, far-away sirens and car alarms no longer sound as if a police car were right next to you, and loud moments no longer clip into crackle.
    • Audio uses less CPU with identical sound: voice mixing takes about half the time, and the accurate sound processor is about 17% faster.
  • Graphics:
    • Fixed a flicker of distant buildings at midday.
    • Distant buildings keep their detail.
    • At night every street lamp is lit, and lamp glows are no longer hidden by their own housing.
    • Frames are paced to your display's real refresh rate.
  • Lights: your headlights follow the game's Light button (LB/L1 on a pad, Q on the keyboard) in cruise and races. On the extra cars, lamps stay on the body after a crash.
  • Map and HUD: paper-route style jobs show the whole remaining route on the map. The minimap's north letter and the race direction arrow are hidden by default; the launcher's Mods tab brings them back.
  • Launcher: every setting explains what it does.
  • Steam: a non-Steam-game shortcut finds the game files whatever folder Steam starts it in.

If sound still breaks up on a slower PC, turn off Accurate sound processor in the launcher. It costs far less CPU, but the game's reverb and other sound effects are not applied.

Validation: 120 of the game's 123 test scripts pass. The other three are known failures: one needs an interactive desktop, one checks a HUD position that an earlier layout change moved, and one differs only under PowerShell 7.6. Every audio speed-up was checked to produce byte-identical sound. On the test PC, command-line installs from the Europe/Australia disc with DLC and the extra cars all completed: a fresh install, a reinstall over it, and a run that removed the cars. The last two kept the DLC and an existing save. The game was not started from those test installs; the same game build was played on the developer's PC. No separate clean Windows VM was tested.

Windows 10/11 x64, Direct3D 11 GPU and about 6 GB free space are required. You must already own the original Xbox game. Ownership does not automatically authorize third-party downloads or redistribution; see ownership, source links and legal-use guidance.

@lakshya16157 lakshya16157 released this 18 Oct 16:28

Setup 1.1 asks for your own supported Xbox disc image, optional local DLC ZIP/folder, install folder and car/graphics options. It bundles the current native game build and its required Visual C++ runtime; no Python or build tools are needed on the target PC.

The supplied Europe/Australia redump is supported. Official DLC import detects all six packs (14 cars and 40 races), preserves saves and existing edits, and excludes console installers/title updates. Game images and official DLC are not bundled or downloaded by Setup.

Validation: 30 installer/DLC-reader tests passed; all 456 disc files verified against the supplied image; standalone DLC/car install and repeat option changes passed with save/DLC preservation. Installed game reached rendered output around 60 FPS and closed cleanly on the test PC. No separate clean Windows VM or interactive gameplay test was performed.

Windows 10/11 x64, Direct3D 11 GPU and about 6 GB free space are required. You must already own the original Xbox game. Ownership does not automatically authorize third-party downloads or redistribution; see ownership, source links and legal-use guidance.
