Refugees Driven Slum Formation Model ODD

Research question:

In conflicts, people forced to flee their countries are defined as refugees. This model simulates residents and refugees house searching process aiming to answer the question: how does the influx of refugees’ impact slums formation in cities considering several levels of urban policy enforcement and government regeneration?

ODD Description:

Purpose and patterns:

Model purpose is to simulate influx of refugees while considering multiple stages of urban policy (low-medium-high) application and urban regeneration to understand the impact of refugees on slums formation. The mechanism driving this model is refugees residents’ interactions as refugees impact the housing market. Their impact can be categorized into direct, like building slums and indirect, like driving demand upwards and increasing rent inflation. This model shows no clear pattern to be described.

Entities, state variables, and scales:

Model includes the following entities: households, refugees-households, properties, patches (virtual city), and observer. Households represent original residents. Refugees-households are household of refugees coming to the city after leaving camps harsh conditions or lack of capacity. Properties are houses per-patch occupied/available by household/refugee. According to their situations, they may also represent slums. Patches represent virtual city of 40×40 cells (e.g. 0.01 km² per-cell and the model landscape represents 0.4 x 0.4 km²) this grid is divided into central and outer areas. One time step represents one month, simulations were run for 500 months.
