v3.1.1
0abf99a

This is maintenance release with bug fixes, installer improvements, and documentation updates.
It coincides with the LAMMPS 30 September 2026 stable release so binary packages will now contain or download that release.

The following changes are included:

  • Fail with an error message instead of aborting with a core dump when LAMMPS-GUI is started on Linux or BSD without a graphical display, e.g. on a remote machine without X11 forwarding; the -h, -v, and -p flags keep working, and selecting a Qt platform plugin explicitly, e.g. with -platform vnc, skips the check
  • Recognize the Windows System32, AppData, and Program Files folders regardless of the capitalization of their names, so LAMMPS-GUI falls back to the home folder and the tutorial wizard to the desktop when launched from there
  • Cite the LAMMPS-GUI paper in the Journal of Open Source Software as the preferred reference in the citation note of the editor and the About dialog, and in the citation metadata and note that it is accepted but not yet published.
  • Create the macOS installer disk image with dmgbuild instead of scripting the Finder, so it can also be built without a desktop session, e.g. over ssh, and works with macOS 26 Tahoe
  • Redesign the macOS installer disk image: a more compact window and background image, a volume icon, the LAMMPS icon on the bundled LAMMPS library, and no more README.txt file, which is not needed for the plain LAMMPS-GUI package
  • Document how to get the unsigned Windows and macOS packages past the operating system download checks, e.g. by downloading them with curl from a terminal, with updated screenshots
  • Add FreeBSD 15.1 to the list of tested platforms

The binary packages attached below include a pre-compiled LAMMPS shared library
with a selection of packages enabled. That library can be replaced with a
different, compatible version using the -p command-line flag or through the
preferences settings, so the GUI can be used with custom-compiled LAMMPS builds
or more recent LAMMPS sources, provided they are recent enough to include all
features required by this version of LAMMPS-GUI. See the online documentation at
https://lammps-gui.lammps.org/ for more information.

If you are looking for LAMMPS-GUI packages with a LAMMPS executable included and
directly linked to LAMMPS, please check out the LAMMPS releases page at
