Determine number format (scientific mode and number of digits) per column

For displaying mixed type columnar datasets, it is currently very annoying, especially in combination with #319. 

I have even witnessed a user so used to disable scientific mode every time that they clicked on the checkbox without even first looking at the data... (and that one time scientific mode wasn't even enabled😢).
