Someone clears a dead mother's apartment before the lease expires. The tasks multiply. The apartment shifts. The prose never flinches.
See SYNOPSIS.md for the full synopsis, chapter outlines, and glitch escalation.
- Third-person position, present tense, no name and no pronoun for the protagonist. The camera is at a fixed position that walks with a body, watches its hands, registers what it touches. It never enters a head. It never leaves the room.
- Calm domestic precision. The prose is material, patient, and flat. It does not raise its voice. The tone never breaks. The content breaks around it.
- Numb single-mindedness. Determination to not think of anything outside the immediate task. Not hysterical, not lyrical, not fragmented-as-breakdown. A person holding together by refusing to look up.
- Refusal of interiority. Thoughts and feelings are not on the page. What the reader knows about the protagonist's interior is what they infer from actions and from what is touched.
- Refusal of interpretation. The prose describes. It does not tell the reader what anything means. No metaphor, no "as if", no em-dash pivots, no naming of the abstractions the novella is about.
- Refusal of consolation. The novella does not soften, reassure, foreshadow, or close. It continues. Then it ends.
- Sustained hesitation. The reader is never told whether the apartment's anomalies are grief, guilt, dissociation, or something structural. The novella refuses to choose.
Grief. Guilt. Mourning. Loss. Memory. Dissociation. Denial. Shame. Regret. Forgiveness. Metaphor. Simulation. Consciousness. Glitch.
The novella is about a body clearing an apartment. The work does not finish. The body leaves anyway.

The novella's 17 chapters move through five phases of inconsistency:
- Phase 1 — Gestural. A hand reaching the wrong way. A door that should have been locked. (Chapters 1-2)
- Phase 2 — Spatial and Procedural. Layout drifts. Completed tasks undo. The list shows inconsistencies. (Chapters 3-6)
- Phase 3 — Relational and Temporal. Facts about mother, the history, the documents shift. The glitches cross into the protagonist's own apartment. (Chapters 7-11)
- Phase 4 — Syntactic. Sentences stop cohering. Objects change identity mid-action. The list is no longer a list. (Chapters 12-15)
- Phase 5 — Clarity. The prose goes clean. The body leaves. (Chapters 16-17)

Unnamed. No pronoun. Mid-forties. Methodical, private. Desk job. Lives alone. Has not spoken to mother in the final years.
The reader's first chapters should produce the impression: this body is competent, it is going to get through this list, the apartment will be cleared. The novella then dismantles the list while the body continues to be competent at the work that no longer adds up to anything.
The protagonist is grammatically absent throughout. Their presence is carried by the camera's position, by bare-verb imperatives, by the occasional minimal body-agent (a hand, a thumb), and by the efficiency of motions that only someone who once knew this apartment could perform.
Never seen directly. Reachable only through her objects, her handwriting, and the trace of her routines. Present in every chapter as the absence the chapter is organised around. Referred to as mother, she, her.
Never named. Never seen. Inferable only. Father.
The name appears exactly once, on the list, in a handwriting that may or may not be recognisable. See CONCEPTUAL_MAP.md "The Three Inferable Backstories".
The landlord, the librarian, the neighbour, the lawyer, the bank clerk, the civil registry clerk, the utility operator. Each present in the scene only as long as the scene needs them. These characters keep their normal pronouns.
Current Phase: Foundation complete. Synopsis, planning artifacts, research dossiers, and voice calibration in place. First draft not yet begun.
Next Steps:
- Draft Chapter 1 ("The Key") and Chapter 17 ("Continue") first (see IMPLEMENTATION_STRATEGY.md)
- Draft Chapters 12 ("The Inscription"), 14 ("The Rooms"), and 7 ("The Neighbour") next
- Fill in remaining chapters chronologically
Target length: ~30,000 words across 17 chapters.
The novella does not moralise and does not instruct. It places a reader at the shoulder of a body performing a sequence of physical tasks at a high level of skill while the conditions of those tasks dissolve around it. Whether the body notices, and what it is doing about what it notices, are things the reader is invited to wonder about and not given the answer to.
The reader who finishes the novella is left with a body that walks home, sits down, and watches light move across its floor.
The reader is asked to sit with this.
