AdobeWine 0.2.2 (testing)

@le-birnes le-birnes released this 11 Oct 01:29

Wine 11.18 with 61 patches. The big one: After Effects renders.

What's new

  • After Effects renders. Adding a comp to the Render Queue used to kill After Effects' main thread (a stack overflow in Wine's Direct2D triangulation while drawing the Render Queue panel), so it looked frozen and aerender failed. Patch 0061 fixes it. Tested with a real 300-layer comp with animated captions: all 1264 frames render, and the checked frames match the Windows render (42.8-68.6 dB PSNR). It renders in 88 s here against 57 s on Windows, and After Effects is still less tested than the other apps.
  • Illustrator PSD and SVG exports use Myriad Pro like on Windows instead of Times New Roman. Adobe's installers create a shared font folder on Windows that was missing under Wine; the launcher now fills it from an installed app.
  • HiDPI: adobewine setup sets Wine's DPI from your desktop's scale, so the apps are no longer tiny on 1.5x/2x screens (--dpi N to choose).
  • Desktop file picker (experimental, WINE_FORCE_PORTAL=1): After Effects' "Format:" list shows its real label.
  • winedbg can attach to processes whose main thread has exited (patch 0062), which is how the After Effects crash was found.

Full list: CHANGELOG.md. Where this is going: docs/ROADMAP.md, comments in discussion #9.

Prebuilt runtime adobewine-0.2.2-x86_64.tar.zst: built on Arch Linux with generic x86-64 flags. It unpacks to /opt/adobewine:

sudo tar -C / -xf adobewine-0.2.2-x86_64.tar.zst
sudo ln -sf /opt/adobewine/bin/adobewine /usr/local/bin/adobewine
adobewine setup

Updating from an earlier version: unpack over the old one, then run adobewine setup once more (that also applies the new DPI setting).

Tested on one machine plus community reports on Linux Mint, Arch/Omarchy and Gentoo. No AMD report yet: if you have an AMD GPU, even "it starts and crashes" helps (adobewine report, or the compatibility report template).

No Adobe software is included, and nothing touches licensing.

Small follow-up to 0.2.0. Wine 11.18 with 59 patches.

What's new

  • Two patches revised, so Wine's own test suite passes again for everything we touch: 0039 (winhttp no longer drops keep-alive connections after chunked replies, and WinHttpReadData returns what is already there instead of waiting) and 0035 (local scripts fire their load event in IE's order). Creative Cloud's Home page and the web installer were rechecked with both.
  • adobewine aftereffects, and an After Effects entry from adobewine launchers. After Effects works in part: projects open, scripting and keyframes work, but rendering does not yet (adding to the Render Queue hangs). This is the top item on the roadmap.
  • The launcher notices an app that closed but did not exit (no window, process still there), ends only that app, and opens a fresh one. Before, the new launch went to the stuck instance and nothing appeared.
  • bin/env.sh works when sourced from zsh.

Where things stand
The README now lists every app in scope, with what works, what is tested and the known gaps. The roadmap to "100% usable" is public: docs/ROADMAP.md, comments in discussion #9. Recent results: all 75 Photoshop filters and adjustments tested give the same output as on Windows; 105 of 139 Illustrator reference outputs match (PSD and SVG exports use the wrong font, a known gap).

Prebuilt runtime adobewine-0.2.1-x86_64.tar.zst: built on Arch Linux with generic x86-64 flags. It unpacks to /opt/adobewine:

sudo tar -C / -xf adobewine-0.2.1-x86_64.tar.zst
sudo ln -sf /opt/adobewine/bin/adobewine /usr/local/bin/adobewine
adobewine setup

Updating from 0.2.0 or 0.1.0: unpack over the old one, then run adobewine setup once more.

Still tested on one machine plus a few community reports; reports from AMD and Intel GPUs and other distributions are very welcome (adobewine report, or the compatibility report template).

No Adobe software is included, and nothing touches licensing.

Second testing release. Wine 11.18 with 59 patches for Adobe Creative Cloud 2026 apps, with the first fixes and features from the community. Thank you all.

What's new

  • The Creative Cloud web installer 2.14.0.82 no longer shows a blank white window. NickPittas tracked it down to three browser features Wine was missing (#2); patches 0055-0057 add them.
  • From switch87: Segoe UI made from Selawik when you have no Windows fonts (#3), Direct3D 12 feature level 12_0/12_1 on Intel GPUs whose driver offers only 11_x, so Photoshop finds the GPU and Camera Raw can edit (#4), the newest installed app release is started and menu entries get their icons (#5), a Gentoo install guide (#7), and the SDR white level query Photoshop's GPU check makes (0058, #6).
  • Patch 0043 fixed (a program that added a font and then listed fonts could hang), and patch 0046 narrowed so Wine's own winhttp tests pass again.
  • Experimental, off by default: Windows file dialogs through your desktop's own file picker (WINE_FORCE_PORTAL=1), ported from NickPittas' AE4Linux and Wine merge request 10060 by Alexander Wilms.

Still tested on one machine only (CachyOS, NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU), plus community reports on Linux Mint (RTX 4060), Arch/Omarchy (RTX 4090) and Gentoo (Intel UHD 620). Reports from other distributions and from AMD and Intel GPUs are very welcome: run adobewine report, or open a Compatibility report issue.

Prebuilt runtime adobewine-0.2.0-x86_64.tar.zst: built on Arch Linux with generic x86-64 flags. It unpacks to /opt/adobewine:

sudo tar -C / -xf adobewine-0.2.0-x86_64.tar.zst
sudo ln -sf /opt/adobewine/bin/adobewine /usr/local/bin/adobewine
adobewine setup

Updating from 0.1.0: unpack over the old one, then run adobewine setup once more.
Runtime dependencies: see docs/INSTALL-ARCH.md section 1.2, or docs/INSTALL.md for Debian/Fedora. Building from source: docs/INSTALL.md.

No Adobe software is included, and nothing touches licensing.
