v0.6.0 — Polish, black by default, and the phone in 3D

Choose a tag to compare

@leeyenkai leeyenkai released this 22 Oct 20:37

True black by default, a phone you can watch turn in 3D, and the defects only a real iPhone would have shown.

Added

  • Attitude: your phone in 3D (R-86). A lit, three-dimensional phone that turns as yours does, from Core Motion's attitude. Give it a push and it sways on a spring and settles back — it deliberately doesn't pretend to track position, and the explainer says why. Drag to look around it; Hold and Recentre.
  • The interface moves. Zoom transitions from tiles, tools and recordings, rolling digits on slow readings, cross-faded states, a drawn-on welcome mark and route, and a "Recording saved" confirmation — all of it stands down under Reduce Motion.
  • Instruments that look the part. A glass vial for the spirit level, upright compass lettering and a locked-bearing arc, a level bar with peak hold on the sound meter, and a metering spot and camera flip on the light meter.
  • Hold on the sound meter; the level's zero is kept per mode and per edge.

Changed

  • True black by default, with iOS's dark-mode blue. System is still a choice, and anyone who picked it keeps it.
  • One design language — the same cards, headers, statistics and controls on every screen.
  • The compass needs no permission; only true north asks for Location.
  • The Record button opens a running recording instead of sitting disabled.
  • Settings that would change what a recording means are fixed while it runs.

Fixed

  • A first journey recording silently dropped its location.
  • A recording carrying on in the background left the open screen's sensors running, the microphone included.
  • Batched GPS fixes were thrown away, and replayed ones written twice.
  • "Until storage runs out" stopped at about half the free space.
  • Angles were averaged as plain numbers, so a heading either side of north averaged to south.
  • The spirit level's bubble sank on one axis; the compass dial spun the long way round at north.
  • Switching tabs away from the Sound or Light meter could turn the microphone or camera back on.

Built and tested in the Simulator — 235 tests, and CI on Xcode 26.6. Nothing here has been verified on physical hardware; the on-device checklist in docs/RELEASE.md §3 still gates v1.0.

v0.5.0 — Logging a journey, and making the app yours

Choose a tag to compare

@leeyenkai leeyenkai released this 22 Oct 20:37

What a recording is actually for — watching it run and seeing where it went — plus the customisation Readout had none of, and the defects a full-source audit turned up.

Added

  • A journey recording carries on when you leave the app. A recording that logs your position keeps running when you lock the phone or switch apps; iOS shows the blue location indicator while it does. The microphone and camera never run in the background.
  • A running recording can be watched — elapsed time, every reading live, and the route building up.
  • A recording shows its route, plotted on the phone, or on Apple Maps behind an opt-in that is off by default.
  • Themes — seven of them — and an interface size in six steps.
  • The recording limit is yours to raise beyond the two-hour, 100 MB default.

Changed

  • The release document is aimed at sharing the app rather than submitting it to the App Store.
  • The Light meter's preview says when there is nothing to show.

Fixed

  • A location permission granted inside the app started nothing.
  • The compass's haptic tick landed halfway between north and east.
  • "About the same as" was claimed however far away the comparison was.
  • The large readouts ignored Dynamic Type; the live chart copied its whole history on every redraw.
  • A second calibration taken straight after the first corrected for a figure that was never shown.

Built and tested in the Simulator. Nothing here has been verified on physical hardware; the on-device checklist in docs/RELEASE.md §3 still gates v1.0.

v0.4.0 — Honest estimates and polish

Choose a tag to compare

@leeyenkai leeyenkai released this 19 Oct 13:44

A calibration a user can actually carry out, charts that show the reading rather than the axis, and the defects a pass over the sensor lifecycle turned up.

Added

  • Calibrate against a reference meter (R-75). Hold a sound level meter or a lux meter beside the phone, type what it reads, and Readout works the correction out itself — averaged over five seconds, rounded no finer than the estimate deserves, and refused when the two figures are too far apart to be a calibration. In the Sound meter, the Light meter and Settings.
  • A labelled time axis on the live chart, an empty state for a grid with every tile hidden, a way back to the first-run explainer, and the model identifier a calibration would be filed under.

Changed

  • Charts fit the samples on screen instead of reaching down to zero.
  • Portrait only, which is what R-1 has always said.
  • Tiles grow with Dynamic Type; coordinates sit on two lines.
  • In the Simulator every reading comes from the synthetic source, so the location group no longer waits for a fix that never arrives.

Fixed

  • A permission granted inside the app now starts whatever was waiting on it.
  • The sound reading is no longer hidden on a phone that has a microphone.
  • No blocking Core Location check while the first frame is built.
  • The spirit level's bubble stays inside its circle on the diagonals.
  • The Sound meter's peak comes from the same history as its other statistics.

Built and tested in the Simulator — 127 tests. Nothing here has been verified on physical hardware; the on-device checklist in docs/RELEASE.md §2 still gates v1.0.
