What's new in 1.1.0

You can now see and hear that it is listening.

Nothing said a dictation had started except the tray icon — and nobody watches the
tray while speaking, because the eye is on the text being written. One spoke
without knowing the microphone was open, and released without knowing the
dictation had been taken.

  • A circle at the top of the screen for as long as the application is busy:
red while recording, orange while transcribing, nothing at rest. The same
signal as the tray icon, put where the eye already is.
  • A short tone at each end of the recording. Higher going in, lower coming
out, so the direction is audible without having to be learnt.
  • The circle is click-through and never takes the focus, so it cannot become
the window a dictation was aimed at.
  • An orange circle also answers something nothing used to: a hotkey pressed while
a transcription is still running is refused by design, and until now nothing
    said so.

Settings

Setting What it does
feedback Both (default), Visual, Sound or None
feedbackColor auto follows the tray colours, or #RRGGBB to force one
feedbackSize diameter in pixels, 16 to 512
feedbackOpacity 20 to 255
feedbackTopMargin pixels below the top of the usable area

As everywhere else in settings.json, an invalid value falls back to its default
rather than stopping the application from starting.

A fifth diagnostic mode

It needs neither the model nor a microphone:

.\HexWin.exe --test-feedback

Known limitation

The circle's appearance is configurable; the tone's volume and duration are
not
— they remain compile-time constants. On a Bluetooth speaker at a low system
volume the cue is easy to miss, with no setting to raise it.

Also in this release: the source comments and test names finish their move to
English.

Install

  1. Unzip the archive wherever you like.
  2. Open PowerShell in that folder and run .\get-model.ps1 to
download the recognition model (about 480 MB).
  3. Double-click HexWin.exe.

The tray icon starts grey while the model is checked, then turns
blue. Hold Ctrl + Windows, speak, release.

No .NET installation is required: everything is bundled.

Windows will warn on first run, since the executable is not
code-signed. Click More info, then Run anyway.
