amdgpu_mtopg 0.2.2

@Geramy Geramy released this 05 Oct 19:21
  1. Works with MacLinuxGPU 0.1.143 (build 243 and later), which bounds its sysfs and register reads: a read that takes longer than 250 ms, or arrives while an earlier one is still running, now skips that sample instead of showing EIO or "GRBM_STATUS read failed".
  2. A skipped sample keeps the last values on screen, including the GPU core activity, and the monitor reads again on the next refresh.

  1. Shows the GPU's name, VRAM and the monitors on its outputs.
  2. Lets go of a MacLinuxGPU driver that is being replaced, so driver upgrades no longer wait for the monitor to be quit, and reconnects to the new driver.

@Geramy Geramy released this 03 Oct 03:30

First public release of amdgpu_mtopg, a live GPU monitor for AMD GPUs on macOS.

What it shows

On mac_linuxgpu the monitor reads the upstream amdgpu driver's own telemetry, the device's sysfs attributes and AMDGPU_INFO (the same data amdgpu_top reads on Linux), through the driver's read-only observer client:

  • GPU load: the fraction of GRBM_STATUS reads with GUI_ACTIVE set over a rolling 2 s window, sampled through AMDGPU_INFO_READ_MMR_REG as amdgpu_top does. Without samples it falls back to sysfs gpu_busy_percent, labeled as the SMU's average.
  • Memory activity: sysfs mem_busy_percent with gpu_metrics average_umc_activity.
  • VRAM / GTT: the mem_info_* attributes (TTM manager usage).
  • Clocks: gpu_metrics current and average clocks, and the pp_dpm_* level tables with the current level marked.
  • Sensors: the hwmon temperatures (with the driver's own labels), power against the cap, fan, voltages and frequencies.
  • Throttling: indep_throttle_status decoded with the SMU_THROTTLER_* bits, plus the raw throttle_status.
  • PCIe link: the pci-sysfs link attributes, the SMU's view and pp_dpm_pcie.

gpu_metrics is decoded by its own header (formats 1.0 to 1.8) with layouts generated from the upstream kgd_pp_interface.h. Every readout names its source, and fields the firmware does not fill show as n/a. The earlier MacAMDGPU driver is also supported through its observer selectors.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon.
  • mac_linuxgpu 0.1.125 or later for the Linux data paths (or MacAMDGPU driver build 172 or later).

Install

  1. Download amdgpu_mtopg-0.2.0.dmg below.
  2. Optionally verify it: shasum -a 256 -c amdgpu_mtopg-0.2.0.dmg.sha256
  3. Open the disk image and drag amdgpu_mtopg to Applications.
  4. Launch it from Applications. Esc or closing the window quits.

The app and the disk image are signed with a Developer ID (Geramy Loveless, YBQ9BU6Q6F), use the hardened runtime, and are notarized by Apple with the tickets stapled, so Gatekeeper opens them without prompts. The app needs no entitlements and makes no network connections.
