One fix, on the phone. The sample song that comes with SingZ stopped the moment you left the app or locked the phone. It always plays on the older audio engine — it is unpacked from inside the app instead of being read from files — and leaving the app silenced that engine whatever it was doing, so any song playing on it went quiet too. Now a song the phone agreed to keep playing carries on behind the Home Screen, and the Lock Screen's play, pause and scrub bar reach it while it does.

One fix, and it is the phone's. Nothing here touches a song you already have.

iPhone and Android:

  • A song the phone agreed to keep playing is no longer silenced when you
    leave.
Press Play on "Sample — Sing with me", go to the Home Screen or
lock the phone, and it used to stop dead. The sample always plays on the
older of the app's two audio engines — it is unpacked from inside the app
rather than read from files, so it cannot use the newer one — and leaving
the app silenced that engine whatever it was doing. Any song on that engine
went the same way, which includes your own songs with Native playback
switched off in Settings, and any song in a format the newer engine cannot
open. Now the sample goes in your pocket like the rest of them, and the
Lock Screen's play, pause and scrub bar reach it while it is back there —
which they could not before either, because a silenced engine refuses to
    start again.

Mac and Windows: nothing changes.

Why it went unnoticed this long: the automatic check that guards background
playback turns the newer engine on before it starts, so it never watched a
song that cannot use it — and the sample is the song every reviewer and every
new singer opens first. There is now a second check that opens the bundled
sample exactly as somebody installing SingZ for the first time would, presses
Play, presses Home, and fails if the song stops, if the app cannot be scrubbed
from the Lock Screen, or if play and pause from there do not reach it. It runs
on both phones.
