torchlight-nx 1.0.2
torchlight-nx 1.0.2
A performance update: the game runs noticeably smoother, still at the console's stock clocks and with exactly
the same picture as before. To update: replace sdmc:/switch/torchlight/torchlight.nro with the one from the
zip. Your game files, saves and settings stay where they are.
Faster
The port is limited by the game's main thread, which runs the whole OGRE engine and the game logic on one CPU core.
This version makes that thread do the same work in less time, so the frame rate is higher in town and in the dungeons.
- Better compiled game code. The recompiled code of the game is now rewritten at build time before being
compiled: function calls that go through a table but almost always reach the same function become direct calls,
constants that the game only reads are built into the code, floating-point values are loaded more efficiently
on the Switch's CPU, and short functions and loops keep the game's registers in the CPU instead of memory. These
rewrites come from the sa2-nx port by ChanseyIsTheBest. - More of the engine in native code. A few of the engine's busiest functions now run as native code written for
the port: the search for visible objects in the scene, the animated effects updated every frame (textures and
particle timers), and the measurement of text width used to lay out text. Every one of them was checked against
the game's own code to give bit-for-bit the same results. - Smoother dialogs. Laying out long texts, such as quest dialogs, was especially slow: some scenes with a quest
giver dropped the frame rate a lot. Text layout is now much faster. - Lighter renderer bookkeeping. The work the port does on the main thread to hand each frame over to the Vulkan
renderer waits less on memory.
Nothing changes in the rendering: no frames skipped, no effects reduced. Overclocking stays optional.
Installation
Unchanged: see the README. You need your own copy of the Xbox Live Arcade game (its package from your Xbox 360).
torchlight-nx 1.0.1
torchlight-nx 1.0.1
A stability and quality-of-life update. To update: replace sdmc:/switch/torchlight/torchlight.nro with the one
from the zip. Your game files, saves and settings stay where they are.
Fixes
- Crash in busy scenes fixed. In scenes with a lot to draw, the game could stop with a GPU error ("device lost").
The cause was in the Vulkan driver (NVK) used by the port: its command queue could fill up exactly at the moment
a frame was submitted, with no way to recover. The driver now keeps room for it and submits earlier instead. - Small textures no longer show garbage. Textures whose shortest side is 16 pixels or less were read from the
wrong place in memory and could appear as colored noise, for example on the fish at the end of the fishing line
and on some small particles. They now match the original game files exactly.
New
- The game follows the language of your console. French, German and Spanish are used automatically when the
console is set to one of them (including Canadian French and Latin American Spanish); any other language gives
English. - Achievements screen. The Achievements entry of the main menu now opens a list of the game's achievements,
unlocked or not, with their descriptions in the game's language. Scroll with the D-pad or the left stick, close
with B. - Main menu background from the start. The main menu shows the area of the character you last played right
from the start of the game, instead of the town. Play a character once and the next launches open on its area.
The port reads a copy of that character's save for this, never the save itself.
Installation
Unchanged: see the README. You need your own copy of the Xbox Live Arcade game (its package from your Xbox 360).
torchlight-nx 1.0.0
First release of torchlight-nx, an unofficial, fan-made Nintendo Switch port of the Xbox Live Arcade version of Torchlight.
Important
This download contains no game files. You need your own copy of Torchlight for Xbox Live Arcade (the game package from your Xbox 360 hard drive). torchlight-nx is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of Torchlight, Runic Games, Microsoft or Nintendo.
Highlights
- Not an emulator: the game code is statically recompiled to native ARM code with ReXGlue, and the game is drawn by a native Vulkan renderer running on NVK (Mesa).
- Stock clocks, no overclock needed: around 30-35 FPS in town and 40-47 FPS in the mines (around 25-29 FPS in town on a launch Switch, which has slower memory).
- Installs from your own XBLA package: drop the package next to the
.nro; the first launch checks every file against the original game's checksums and installs it (about 30 seconds). Interrupted installations resume. - Handheld and docked (TV) modes, sleep mode and the HOME button.
- Saves, character deletion and the on-screen keyboard work.
Installation
-
Extract
torchlight-nx-1.0.0.zipto the root of your SD card (you getsdmc:/switch/torchlight/torchlight.nro). -
Copy your Torchlight package file into
sdmc:/switch/torchlight/. -
Launch with full memory:
- recommended: from a forwarder on the Home menu (for example made with Sphaira);
- or hold R while starting any installed game (title override).
Launching from the Album (applet mode) does not provide enough memory.
See the README for details.
Known issues
- Buttons follow the Xbox 360 letters, not their positions (A/B and X/Y are swapped compared to the Xbox 360 layout), and the in-game prompts still show Xbox 360 icons.
- Some stutter during the first minutes, while the console compiles the game's shaders (they are cached for the next sessions).
- Very long sessions and the deepest dungeon levels have not been fully tested yet.
Reporting a problem
Please open an issue with the port version and the contents of sdmc:/switch/torchlight/logs/ (in particular logs/rex/rex_crash.log after a crash).
