School Holidays Marking

Vacay is super useful. What I’m missing, though, is a marker for school holidays. Websites often provide iCal files that could be used for quick import. As a parent, I’d really appreciate seeing this feature added in the future. Best regards ;)

I would totally agree with this improvement. I just started using Trek and love it so far. Having school vacations visible in the calendar (similar to public holidays) would be such a great improvement.

+1, would be great to be able to import ical or add custom holidays. I am a student with a job, so tracking both university holidays and work leave days in one place would be super useful.

Proposed workflow

Extend the existing holiday-calendar functionality with a separate School Holidays calendar type.

In Vacay → Settings, users should be able to select:

Add calendar → School holidays

The configuration should contain:

• Calendar label, defaulting to “School holidays”
• Calendar color
• Country
• Federal state / subdivision
• Delete calendar action

Example:

• Type: School holidays
• Country: Germany
• Federal state: Bavaria
• Label: School holidays – Bavaria
• Color: user-selectable

School holidays must be treated as a purely visual calendar layer:

• They must not create, remove or block vacation entries.
• They must not affect vacation-day calculations.
• They must not be processed by the existing public-holiday logic, which removes vacation entries on recognized public holidays.
• Public holidays, school holidays, company holidays and personal vacation entries must be able to appear on the same date.

The current calendar state stores only one holiday marker per date. It therefore needs to support multiple markers per date or define an explicit display priority for overlapping calendar sources.

Data source

Use the public OpenHolidays API:

GET /SchoolHolidays
  ?countryIsoCode=DE
  &subdivisionCode=DE-BY
  &languageIsoCode=DE
  &validFrom=2026-01-01
  &validTo=2026-12-31

The API:

• requires no API key;
• supports German school holidays from 2020;
• uses ISO 3166-2 subdivision codes;
• returns translated holiday names;
• supports JSON and iCalendar;
• is available under the ODbL license.

The requests should be made through the TREK backend and cached, following the existing public-holiday integration.

Calendar display

School-holiday periods should be highlighted for every day between startDate and endDate, inclusively.

The marker should:

• use the configured calendar color;
• show the holiday name, e.g. “Summer holidays”;
• remain visually distinguishable from public holidays, company holidays and personal vacation;
• support overlapping calendar sources;
• not create vacation entries;
• not deduct vacation allowance;
• not block or remove existing vacation entries.

Suggested implementation

Extend vacay_holiday_calendars with a calendar/source type, for example:

type: public_holiday | school_holiday
country: DE
subdivision: DE-BY

Public-holiday calendars can continue using the existing Nager.Date integration. School-holiday calendars would use OpenHolidays.

The existing applyHolidayCalendars behavior must only apply to public_holiday calendars. School-holiday data must never trigger the deletion of records from vacay_entries or vacay_company_holidays.

The client-side holiday structure should support multiple entries per date, for example:

Record<string, CalendarMarker[]>

This is necessary when a public holiday and a school-holiday period overlap.

The configured school calendar should be shared when vacation plans are fused, just like the existing public-holiday settings.

Acceptance criteria

• A user can add a “School holidays” calendar in Vacay settings.
• Germany and all supported federal states can be selected.
• The configured color and label are persisted.
• School holidays for the displayed year are loaded through the TREK backend.
• Every day of a holiday period is visibly marked.
• The holiday name is available in the day details or tooltip.
• School holidays do not affect vacation-day calculations.
• School holidays do not delete, block or modify vacation entries.
• School holidays do not modify company holidays.
• Public holidays and school holidays can be displayed simultaneously.
• Multiple calendar markers on the same date are supported.
• API responses are cached and temporary provider failures do not break Vacay.
• ODbL attribution is included where required.
• The functionality is covered by service, store and UI tests.

Possible follow-up

A generic iCalendar URL/file import could be implemented separately later. For the initial version, a structured provider is preferable because it offers validated regions, predictable data and automatic updates.

Hard disagree. School and university holidays differ not just by country, but also by specific school and even specific programme and year. There is no way to get that from some API. The only way is manual editing of holiday days.

Feel Free to update my request. My request is API based. You can update it with an "individual part for schools".
In Germany (and many other countries) the API would be enough.

I'd also like to see this. But i think it could be even simpler then ical import. Id be happy with School Holiday option just like company holiday. Just give the option to enable it for those that want it.
