v0.07.5 — Linux Compatibility Test/Patch

Choose a tag to compare

@linkssy2 linkssy2 released this 23 Oct 17:36

Linux-only compatibility test/patch for 0.07. This is a regular release, but Linux gameplay remains experimental. Windows users should keep using v0.07.

  • Corrected shader syntax rejected by Wine, addressing a verified cause of a black screen with audio and an FPS counter. All 185 captured shader variants now compile in the Wine test; 89 failed before the fix.
  • Refreshed the bundled shader cache while preserving existing learned caches, saves and settings. Windows compiler comparisons produced identical shader bytecode.
  • Rewrote the Linux instructions around Steam and Proton, with clearer import, play, language, HD texture and troubleshooting steps.
  • Includes the integrated Spanish translation and all 0.07 features. The existing HD game texture pack is unchanged and remains optional.

Download: UrbanChaos-BurnerEdition-0.07.5-Linux-Compatibility-Test.tar.gz is the complete Linux package, not a patch to copy over the game executable. Extract it and follow README-linux.txt, using the recommended Steam setup. Requires Linux x86-64, Steam/Proton, suitable Vulkan drivers and your supported original Xbox ISO or previously imported GameData.

Updating: back up and copy your existing GameData into the new extracted folder. Update your existing Steam shortcut to the new folder, then launch through the documented worker. It updates the runtime and bundled shader seed automatically. No ISO reimport or HD texture reinstall is needed for an existing working import.

The optional HD game texture download is the same pack used by 0.07. Spanish text is already included; no separate language download is needed. Voices remain in English when using Spanish.

Testing limits: release/build and package checks passed, along with shader compilation using Wine 11.20. Live Proton rendering, gameplay, FMVs, audio and controller behavior still need confirmation on Linux hardware; this is not a native Linux port or a guarantee that every black-screen cause is resolved. HD HUD retains its known prompt/display issues.

If it still fails, use the optional Proton logging steps in README-linux.txt and report your Linux distribution, GPU/driver, Proton version and what appears on screen.

@linkssy2 linkssy2 released this 23 Oct 15:04

Urban Chaos: Riot Response — Burner Edition 0.07 is ready, with these updates since 0.06:

0.07 packaging correction: the Windows and experimental Linux/Proton downloads now include the Spanish translation data omitted from the first 0.07 packages. No separate Spanish download is needed. Keep your GameData folder when replacing the release files; the next Play prepares the translation automatically.

  • Rifle scope: corrected the remaining widescreen border gaps and incomplete red tint.
  • FOV and first-person arms: climbing keeps your selected FOV. Improved arm coverage during climbing and shield bashes, corrected stretched sleeve mapping, and aligned the taser's electrical arc at changed FOV settings.
  • Menus: fixed invisible restart confirmations and Difficulty-menu flicker. Mission/checkpoint restart dialogs now use mouse-friendly controls when playing with keyboard and mouse; controller layouts remain available.
  • Lighting: fixed the reported flickering wall lighting and restored the original depth-clamp handling.
  • Wall textures: added a targeted stone-ledge mapping repair for both original and HD textures. The reporter's exact wall still needs visual confirmation.
  • Blue pipe flames: fixed another cause of invisible flames, where active effects could run out of renderer registrations. This fix does not require reinstalling the HD texture pack.
  • Shader warm-up: included known shader variants to reduce first-use stutters while preserving your existing learned cache. New shaders and other first-use work can still cause hitches.
  • Performance: reduced repeated audio decoding using a selected upstream improvement and reduced unnecessary keyboard polling.
  • Controls and ragdolls: added separate Next Firearm and Previous Firearm bindings, and restored character collision with ragdoll bodies.
  • Spanish: integrated ZARF's community translation, supplemental game text, Spanish PC menus and control descriptions, plus language selection in Setup and in the game. Translation data is bundled and prepared automatically from your imported game on the first Play after import or upgrade; voices remain in English.
  • Experimental Linux support: added a separate Proton package with launch/setup scripts for running the same Windows game on Linux. It is not a native Linux port, and Linux gameplay is not yet verified.

Downloads and updating

Choose the Windows ZIP or the experimental Linux/Proton archive. Linux users need their own Steam/Proton installation; the package includes setup instructions but does not bundle Proton. Source and checksums are also included with this release.

The HD game texture pack remains a separate download. The unchanged 0.06 HD pack is compatible with 0.07; existing users do not need to reinstall it. Spanish text is included in the main downloads. Only translation data is bundled; the launcher builds the translated game files locally from your imported ISO. Credit for the HD textures goes to xXthe.RockoXx, and for the community Spanish translation to ZARF.

For a new Windows installation, extract the complete package and import your supported original Xbox ISO through Setup. Linux users should follow README-linux.txt and use burner.sh. For an update, copy your existing GameData folder beside the new launchers and keep a backup. No original disc files or personal saves are bundled.

Select Spanish in Burner Edition Setup or Options > Language, then restart the game. Linux users can also run ./burner.sh language spanish. Updating preserves your saves, other settings and installed HD textures.

On first ISO import, Setup can automatically copy matching saves and settings from the older %LOCALAPPDATA%\UrbanChaosBurnerEdition installation. A freshly extracted folder therefore does not necessarily start with a fresh profile. Existing portable saves take priority, and the older installation is left untouched.

Remaining issues

  • HD HUD still has prompt/display issues; the original HUD remains available.
  • The intermittent missing injured officer in Angel Heights remains unresolved.
  • Spanish additions need community review, and the ledge repair needs confirmation at the original reported location.
  • Linux gameplay, full-campaign coverage, and the full range of GPU configurations remain unverified.

Burner Edition 0.05 — Portable setup, HD UI and performance update

HD HUD is still a work in progress and has known prompt/display issues. Turn HD UI Off to use the original HUD, which works normally.

Changes since 0.04:

HUD and graphics

  • Added an optional HD HUD and menus setting, including restored weapon/ammo icons, medals and menu pictures, plus sharper fonts and button artwork. It also applies to original controller menus and pause screens; HD UI defaults to Off.
  • Added a world FOV slider: 40–90 vertical degrees, default 53, preserving the original zoom behavior.
  • Added a separate Weapon FOV slider: 50–150%, default 100%, adjusting the gun/hands view independently of the world camera.
  • Added a reticle-size slider: 50–200%, default 100%.
  • Improved 16:9 HUD placement and corrected interaction brackets being shifted away from their target by a second widescreen adjustment.
  • Corrected the Display Orders hint to show the configured mouse/key binding in keyboard-and-mouse mode.

Menus and input

  • Brought the earlier Burner Edition mouse-menu style to the Direct3D 12 build, including main, pause, Audio and General pages, with matching selection rows and change arrows.
  • Replaced the pause Quit confirmation with mouse-friendly Yes/No rows while retaining the original warning, sounds and actions.
  • Suppressed original menu rows/sprites beneath their mouse replacements so they do not show through during transitions. Controller users retain the original menus; added Graphics and Controls pages remain available.
  • Improved short keyboard-tap delivery through original menu updates, cleared stale input at screen/focus changes, and prevented rapid confirm presses from carrying into a different page.
  • Integrated the new sliders and HD toggle with mouse, keyboard and controller navigation, Apply, Discard and saved settings.

Performance and caching

  • Improved frame pacing and recovery in busy scenes, with work focused on the Canals opening and car explosion. Shared renderer changes apply across levels; frame drops can still occur.
  • Corrected vertical-blank waiting and redundant waits during the game's flash/fade display path.
  • Made renderer busy checks nonblocking and submitted large draw workloads in bounded batches.
  • Batched completed visibility-query results while retaining the original visibility counts and synchronization.
  • Reduced vertex/index conversion, allocation and upload overhead; reused unchanged geometry within valid frame lifetimes.
  • Reused texture views and sampler inputs, sped up texture-format lookup and render-state comparisons, and removed repeated texture/palette/MSAA metadata work.
  • Improved descriptor and upload-buffer lifetime handling when frame storage fills up.
  • Added persistent D3D12 pipeline caching, moved shader/cache writes off the drawing path, and improved rejection of stale or incomplete cache entries.
  • Reduced repeated audio loop-bound calculations without changing playback behavior.

Portable installation and release cleanup

  • GameData now stays beside the launchers, including imported game files, profiles, settings and shader cache. Move the whole folder to keep the installation together.
  • First ISO import can copy compatible saves/settings/cache from the previous AppData-based XBE installation without changing the old copy. Existing portable data takes priority; cancelled or failed imports preserve it.
  • Direct Play uses this installation's GameData, independent of a shortcut's working directory, instead of silently falling back to AppData.
  • Updated the source snapshot, code map and maintenance notes. Release diagnostics/capture hotkeys are disabled; bounded error reporting remains available for failures.

Install/update: Extract the complete Windows x64 ZIP to a writable folder. Run Burner Edition Setup.exe and select your supported Xbox ISO/XISO, then use Play Burner Edition.exe. Existing portable users should copy their GameData folder beside the new launchers. Back up saves before removing an old installation. Required runtime DLLs are included.

Content: No original disc files, Xbox executable, videos or saves are supplied. Your ISO provides the game content. The download includes the approved restored HD replacement artwork and custom Burner Edition artwork.

Other limits: Performance varies by scene and hardware; this is not a guarantee of constant 60 FPS. Switch 2 USB remains experimental and hardware-unverified; Bluetooth is unsupported. The source snapshot still requires private title-generation inputs for a complete rebuild, as documented in the build notes.

Burner Edition 0.04 — Controller and menu update

  • Fixed controller navigation on the new-game difficulty screen and added controller operation throughout the PC settings menus.
  • Added PlayStation and Nintendo button artwork, corrected Xbox Rewards/Difficulty prompts, and hide the mouse pointer during controller use.
  • Original profile and level/rewards menus return when using a controller; PC settings remain available.
  • Added a mouse-friendly Rewards sidebar with original thumbnails and details, matching level select's icon size and spacing.
  • Included experimental Switch 2 USB support. Hardware validation is pending; Bluetooth is unsupported and a compatible Windows USB driver may be needed. No system drivers are installed by the launcher.

Install/update: Extract the complete Windows x64 ZIP. Run Burner Edition Setup.exe with your supported Xbox ISO/XISO, or use Play Burner Edition.exe if you already imported your game. Existing verified imports and current-runtime saves/settings are reused. Required runtime DLLs are included. No original game assets are included.

Notes: Dynamic scenery/character lighting, busy effects and retained bodies can still cause frame drops. Physical PlayStation/Nintendo testing remains pending; controllers presented as Xbox by a remapper show Xbox prompts.

@linkssy2 linkssy2 released this 16 Oct 02:53

Burner Edition 0.03 — PC port

  • Moved to XboxXBERecomp by TGP482 and its Direct3D 12 renderer, with improved performance in testing. Thanks also to sp00nz's xboxrecomp for the earlier foundation and retained helpers.
  • Added game-style mouse menus, keyboard/controller rebinding, profile management and PC prompts. Fixed dialogue Skip prompts, HUD pulse behavior, audio and fog issues.
  • Expanded Graphics settings: widescreen, resolution/internal scaling, MSAA, filtering, lighting, fog and ragdoll options.
  • Added English, French, Italian and German selection in Options → Language; restart to apply. Custom PC settings text remains English.
  • Updated ISO setup/direct Play launchers, bundled required C++ runtime DLLs, and disabled routine diagnostics/logging.

Install: Extract the Windows x64 ZIP, run Burner Edition Setup.exe, and select your supported Xbox ISO/XISO. Then use Play Burner Edition.exe. Requires Windows 10/11 x64 and a Direct3D 12-capable GPU. No original game assets are included.

Upgrading: Verified disc imports are reused. New saves/settings use the separate xbe-runtime folder; older saves/settings are preserved but are not automatically migrated.

Performance: Dynamic scenery lighting, character lighting, effects and retained bodies can still cause slowdowns, especially during explosions. Adjust Graphics settings as needed; 60 FPS is not guaranteed.

Burner Edition 0.02 — compatibility hotfix

  • Added support for the verified USA/Europe retail ISO and its XISO conversion, alongside the previously supported copy.
  • Fixed the missing mouse hold-and-drag visual cue when accepting healing from a medic.
  • Removed embedded original HUD artwork; it is now generated from your imported disc with unchanged pixels and custom PC prompts.
  • Existing imports, settings and saves remain compatible. Disc compatibility passed user gameplay testing. The final HUD extraction change passed byte-for-byte pixel, renderer/input and import checks; it has not had another live playthrough.

Install: Extract the Win64 ZIP, run Burner Edition Setup.exe, and select your supported Xbox ISO/XISO. After import, use Play Burner Edition.exe. Existing users can extract the update to a new folder and reuse their installed data.

An unofficial Windows x64 hybrid recompilation using xboxrecomp by sp00nz and native PC engine components, retaining original gameplay and mission logic.

Performance: Dynamic scenery lighting and character lighting can cause slowdowns. Lower their settings in Graphics and press Apply. Routine runtime logging and diagnostic recorders remain disabled.

No ISO, standalone Xbox executable, bulk game data, videos or saves are bundled. Original HUD artwork is also sourced from your disc rather than bundled.

Source/build limitations remain documented in docs/BUILDING.md. This hotfix does not complete the standalone rebuild pipeline.
