Changes in 3.1.0
- Enable spatial adaptive quantization.
- This now requires macOS 15 or later.
Spatial adaptive quantization optimizes perceived picture quality by shifting bits within a video frame from complex, highly textured areas to flat, smooth areas.
The human eye is highly sensitive to artifacts, banding, and blocking in flat areas. Even minor distortions in these areas can be instantly distracting, whereas in highly detailed or busy areas, the eye cannot easily detect tiny compression artifacts hidden among complex patterns.
If you want to further reduce compression artifacts in detailed areas, even when they are barely noticeable, you can increase the quality parameter -q by 2–4 points. This will, however, result in larger file sizes.
Renamed project to mx-upscale
This tool was originally a fork of fx-upscale. Since then, I’ve added many new features that go far beyond what it used to be. Users who know the original tool might be confused about the differences, so I decided to rename this repository and tool to mx-upscale to better reflect the many changes and improvements it has gone through. Because mx-upscale uses MetalFX for its operations, the new name also highlights this foundation more clearly.
