ScreenshotBox 0.1.5-linux.1 — Ubuntu / X11 preview

First Linux preview of ScreenshotBox, for Ubuntu x64 with an X11 desktop. The Windows release remains 0.1.4.

Features

• Region capture with eight resize handles and selection movement.
• Pen, arrows, rectangles, adjustable sizes, color palette, mosaic, annotation eraser and undo.
• Save and copy, copy only, or export PNG. Local CPU OCR runs after saving.
• PNG/JPEG import, notes, tags, stars, trash and restore.
• Literal Chinese/English text search and whole-line highlights in the image preview.
• System/light/dark themes; system language or manual Simplified Chinese/English; custom hotkeys and library directory; validated library backups.

The Linux frontend uses Avalonia and shares the storage, search, backup and OCR code with Windows. Sources and component licenses are in the repository.

Download and run

Download the .tar.gz and its .sha256 file. The 77.54 MiB archive includes the .NET runtime, native libraries and Chinese OCR models. No SDK, Python, CUDA, account or API key is required to run it. Normal Linux desktop libraries and an X11 server are required.

Checks and limitations

On Ubuntu 20.04.3 / WSL with XLaunch: 42 Core tests, 41 service checks with actual CPU Chinese OCR, 42 capture checks, 20 app checks per language, 19 installer transaction checks and 8 archive checks passed. The final archive was extracted and installed in a Chinese path containing spaces. Install/update/uninstall and extracted permissions passed 13 checks. The installed executable passed 20 app checks; uninstall then retained its database, original and thumbnail with unchanged hashes (7 checks). Windows and Linux CI passed for the source commit.

The self-contained executable recognized a Chinese fixture into five saved line boxes; short queries still matched after restart. Six colorful English fixtures produced 79 line boxes. Process-local outbound TCP checks allowed only the local X11 server; this is not a disconnected fresh-machine test. Release checks.

• X11 only for capture and global shortcuts. Wayland capture and portal shortcuts are not implemented.
• Linux tray integration and login startup are not included. Closing the library window exits the app.
• WSL/XLaunch captures the X server desktop, not Windows application windows.
• Physical Ubuntu desktop sessions, mixed-DPI monitors, manual image paste into common Linux applications and a fresh disconnected machine remain unverified.
• Ubuntu 20.04 is an experimental compatibility test environment, outside the current .NET Ubuntu support list. CI runs on Ubuntu 22.04; desktop behavior there has not been tested on hardware.
• OCR can misread text. Highlights cover whole recognized lines. Mosaic is visual pixelation, not secure redaction.

已在本机 WSL Ubuntu / XLaunch 验证实际窗口、截图组件、中文识别、重启保留、剪贴板及安装更新卸载。Linux 当前没有托盘和登录自启动；Wayland 截图未实现。WSL/XLaunch 截取的是 X 服务画面，无法截取 Windows 应用。实机 Ubuntu 桌面、混合 DPI 多屏、常见应用手工粘贴及全新断网电脑仍未验证。

Changes

• Starts quietly in the tray at Windows sign-in after installation. Disable or enable ScreenshotBox in Task Manager → Startup apps; updates retain Windows' startup approval state.
• Installer startup is selected by default and can be cleared. Manual launches open the library; repeated background launches leave it hidden.
• New original SVG and nine-size Windows icon, shared by the app, tray, and installer.
• Fixed the PowerShell 5.1 script uninstaller's file-list handling. Script installation accepts -NoAutoStart.

Downloads

For Windows 11 x64. Choose the installer for a per-user installation and sign-in startup, or extract the complete ZIP for portable use. Both include .NET and Chinese CPU OCR models. No SDK, Python, CUDA, account, or API key is needed to run the app. Check the adjacent SHA-256 files. Packages are approximately 84 MiB (installer) and 108.5 MiB (ZIP).

The release is unsigned. Sign-out/sign-in, Task Manager interaction, mixed-DPI multiple monitors, and a fresh physically offline computer remain unverified. See the test record and known limitations.

Download verification

Edge may say the installer “is not commonly downloaded.” The 0.1.4 installer and application EXE are unsigned; this is a download-reputation notice, not a malware verdict. The installer SHA-256 is 96b7ddfbad053630706e3c188ea0f22a31549f00df90a016744b100b2220a38e (88,097,504 bytes). Compare the downloaded file with the adjacent .sha256 file. Matching proves that the bytes equal this release asset; it does not prove that the software is harmless. Do not disable security protection to install it. If Windows reports a specific malware detection, stop and report its name and the file hash. Verification steps. Code signing policy.

ScreenshotBox 0.1.3

Windows 11 x64 preview. Capture a screen region, annotate it, and save it locally. OCR runs in the background so you can find the image later by its text.

Changes

• Chinese and English interfaces across the library, preview, editor, capture toolbar, palette, tray menu, settings, and application messages.
• Language defaults to System: Chinese Windows display languages use Simplified Chinese; all other display languages use English. Choose System, 简体中文, or English in Settings, then apply and restart. User titles, notes, tags, and recognized text stay unchanged.
• English is now the default documentation entry, with an independent Chinese README. User guides, build instructions, architecture, and test records follow the same structure.

Install ScreenshotBox-0.1.3-win-x64-setup.exe to choose an installation directory, or extract the complete ZIP and run ScreenshotBox.exe. Quit an older version from the tray before upgrading. The runtime, native libraries, and Chinese/English CPU OCR models are included; no account, API key, Python, or dedicated GPU is required.

Default shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+S. Settings supports combinations such as Alt+A and reports occupied global hotkeys and common reserved system combinations. The library defaults to %LOCALAPPDATA%\ScreenshotBox\library; Settings can move it to another folder.

Verification

The final installer was installed in a separate folder with Chinese characters and spaces. All 497 executable, library, and model hashes matched the distribution. The installed application passed 43 integration checks for each policy: System, English, and Simplified Chinese, including the English System labels in both theme and language controls. An independent restart recovered one interrupted OCR task. Uninstall preserved the database, originals, thumbnails, and an extra user file.

The test processes used the bundled runtime with no SDK lookup and an unavailable proxy. The test computer's network was not physically disconnected. System-language mapping for Traditional Chinese and several other locales was tested with supplied locale names; Windows itself was not switched between those language packs.

English capture layout checks covered 24 toolbar samples. Windows CI covers 42 Core tests and 35 synthetic pixel checks. See test records and UI checks.

Known limits

The app and installer are unsigned. Mixed-DPI dual displays, external-app paste, the complete manual settings/restart flow, and a fresh SDK-free computer with a physically disconnected network remain unverified. OCR may make mistakes; match highlights cover entire text lines. Mosaic is visual pixelation and does not guarantee secure redaction. Windows system dialogs can retain the operating system's language.

Project code and the original icon use MIT; bundled components retain their licenses.

• Six quick colors and an RGB/Hex palette. Adjustable pen, shape, eraser, and mosaic sizes.
• Arrows, rectangles, undo/redo, and undoable clear. Erasing restores source pixels; tool preferences survive restart.
• Consistent Save labels, exact tag filtering, unsaved-edit indicators, and a single metadata editor per image.
• Improved tall-image fitting and actual pixel size. Space and Enter no longer intercept buttons.
• Atomic PNG replacement preserves an existing file if the write fails.

33 Core tests passed. Distribution checks covered Chinese OCR, keyword queries, metadata, clipboard readback, retry, delete/restore races, backup, restart recovery, and duplicate launch. At 125% scaling, a 1000 px image in actual-size mode occupied 1000 physical pixels. See test records.

Mixed-DPI displays, external-app paste, a full manual input pass, and a fresh SDK-free computer with the network physically disconnected remain untested. The installer is unsigned. Empty-library working set was about 148 MiB on the test machine; multi-window OCR used about 360 MiB.
