Glyphie 0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Oct 03:27
926baba

Glyphie 0.4.0 adds the Unicode 17 and 18 emojis and makes the gender filter work.

What's new

  • Unicode 18 emojis: 17 new emojis, among them 🫪 distorted face, 🫍 orca, 🫝 pickle and 🫌 monarch butterfly. Search finds them by name and keyword like the rest.
  • Bundled emoji font: Glyphie now carries its own copy of Noto Color Emoji 2.057, so the picker shows every emoji even where the system font is older, as on Ubuntu and Pop!_OS 24.04. Apps that draw with an older system emoji font can still show the newest emojis as blanks. The download is about 10 MB larger.
  • Skin tones for bunny ears and wrestlers: people with bunny ears and people wrestling now follow your skin tone. The two new thumb signs, 🫹 and 🫺, keep their default colour until the font has toned forms for them.
  • Gender filter: Female and Male now hide the other gender's emojis in People & Body. Before this release the filter had no effect. If you set it earlier, some emojis will be gone after the update; set it back to All to see everything. An empty result now says when a filter is on.

Install

Ubuntu 24.04, Pop!_OS 24.04, Debian 13 or newer (apt pulls in wl-clipboard and the emoji font):

sudo apt install ./glyphie_0.4.0_amd64.deb

Flatpak (the runtime is fetched from Flathub automatically):

flatpak install --user glyphie-0.4.0.flatpak
flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie

From source (Rust 1.93 or newer):

git clone https://github.com/lkbddh/glyphie.git && cd glyphie
just build-release && sudo just install

Bind a shortcut under Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command glyphie, or flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie for the Flatpak.

If you installed an earlier version with sudo just install, install 0.4.0 the same way or with the .deb so your shortcut runs the new binary.

Glyphie 0.3.4

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Oct 00:39
ad22507

Glyphie 0.3.4 lets Left and Right move through the results while you type a search.

What's new

  • Arrow keys while searching: Left and Right move the highlight through the results even with text in the search field. Type happy, press Right twice, then Enter, and the third result is copied.
  • Editing the search text: Shift or Ctrl with Left and Right still select and move through the text you typed. Plain Left and Right leave the cursor at the end.

Install

Ubuntu 24.04, Pop!_OS 24.04, Debian 13 or newer (apt pulls in wl-clipboard and the emoji font):

sudo apt install ./glyphie_0.3.4_amd64.deb

Flatpak (the runtime is fetched from Flathub automatically):

flatpak install --user glyphie-0.3.4.flatpak
flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie

From source (Rust 1.93 or newer):

git clone https://github.com/lkbddh/glyphie.git && cd glyphie
just build-release && sudo just install

Bind a shortcut under Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command glyphie, or flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie for the Flatpak.

If you installed an earlier version with sudo just install, install 0.3.4 the same way or with the .deb so your shortcut runs the new binary.

Glyphie 0.3.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 13 Oct 00:08
cb19fee

Glyphie 0.3.3 moves the search field into the header bar, as in COSMIC Settings.

What's new

  • Search in the header bar: the search field sits next to the menu button, with a clear button, and the emojis get the space it used to take.
  • Esc keeps your place: after Esc clears the search, a selection or a menu, the cursor stays in the search field so you can keep typing.
  • Arrow keys on an empty search: Left and Right move through the emojis whenever the search is empty, including right after the picker opens.

Install

Ubuntu 24.04, Pop!_OS 24.04, Debian 13 or newer (apt pulls in wl-clipboard and the emoji font):

sudo apt install ./glyphie_0.3.3_amd64.deb

Flatpak (the runtime is fetched from Flathub automatically):

flatpak install --user glyphie-0.3.3.flatpak
flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie

From source (Rust 1.93 or newer):

git clone https://github.com/lkbddh/glyphie.git && cd glyphie
just build-release && sudo just install

Bind a shortcut under Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command glyphie, or flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie for the Flatpak.

Glyphie 0.3.2 puts the cursor in the search bar as soon as the picker opens.

What's new

  • Type straight away: the search bar has focus when the picker opens, so you can start typing without clicking it first.

Install

Ubuntu 24.04, Pop!_OS 24.04, Debian 13 or newer (apt pulls in wl-clipboard and the emoji font):

sudo apt install ./glyphie_0.3.2_amd64.deb

Flatpak (the runtime is fetched from Flathub automatically):

flatpak install --user glyphie-0.3.2.flatpak
flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie

From source (Rust 1.93 or newer):

git clone https://github.com/lkbddh/glyphie.git && cd glyphie
just build-release && sudo just install

Bind a shortcut under Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command glyphie, or flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie for the Flatpak.

Glyphie 0.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@lkbddh lkbddh released this 01 Oct 08:21
dfd7c9a

Glyphie 0.3.1 has a new icon, a new app ID, keyboard and skin-tone fixes, and a .deb package.

What's new

  • New icon.
  • Keyboard navigation: ↑ and ↓ move exactly one row, keep their column across subcategory headers, and keep the highlighted emoji in view in long categories.
  • Skin tones: "people holding hands" takes the chosen tone correctly. Before, the handshake was toned too, which broke the emoji into separate pieces.
  • New app ID: Glyphie is now com.lkbddh.Glyphie. Preferences and recent emojis reset once; see Upgrading from 0.3.0 to keep them.
  • .deb package for Debian, Ubuntu and Pop!_OS, attached next to the Flatpak bundle.
  • Built on the latest libcosmic.

Install

Ubuntu 24.04, Pop!_OS 24.04, Debian 13 or newer (apt pulls in wl-clipboard and the emoji font):

sudo apt install ./glyphie_0.3.1_amd64.deb

Flatpak (the runtime is fetched from Flathub automatically):

flatpak install --user glyphie-0.3.1.flatpak
flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie

From source (Rust 1.93 or newer):

git clone https://github.com/lkbddh/glyphie.git && cd glyphie
just build-release && sudo just install

Bind a shortcut under Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command glyphie, or flatpak run com.lkbddh.Glyphie for the Flatpak. Super + ; works well, because COSMIC already uses Super + . for Zoom In.

Upgrading from 0.3.0

To keep your preferences and recent emojis, copy them to the new app ID:

cp -r ~/.config/cosmic/com.aldeastudio.Glyphie/. ~/.config/cosmic/com.lkbddh.Glyphie
cp -r ~/.local/state/cosmic/com.aldeastudio.Glyphie/. ~/.local/state/cosmic/com.lkbddh.Glyphie

The Flatpak installs as a separate app. Remove the old one with flatpak uninstall com.aldeastudio.Glyphie, and change any shortcut that runs flatpak run com.aldeastudio.Glyphie.

If you installed 0.3.0 with sudo just install, remove its launcher entry and icons, or you'll see two Glyphie entries:

sudo rm -f /usr/share/applications/com.aldeastudio.Glyphie.desktop \
  /usr/share/metainfo/com.aldeastudio.Glyphie.metainfo.xml \
  /usr/share/icons/hicolor/*/apps/com.aldeastudio.Glyphie.* \
  /usr/share/icons/Cosmic/scalable/apps/com.aldeastudio.Glyphie.svg

Glyphie 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@lkbddh lkbddh released this 17 Sep 05:07

Glyphie 0.3.0 is built on libcosmic 1.0.

What's new

  • Frosted glass: the picker follows COSMIC's translucent window setting.
  • Readable on translucent windows: secondary text and dividers now use theme colors.
  • Ctrl+C copies on non-Latin keyboard layouts.
  • Recent emojis history holds up to 36 emojis.
  • Flatpak fix: preferences and recent emojis are now saved. Before, the sandbox couldn't write Glyphie's config.
  • Flatpak runtime: Freedesktop 26.08, with wl-clipboard 2.3.0 bundled.

Install

Flatpak (the runtime is fetched from Flathub automatically):

flatpak install --user glyphie-0.3.0.flatpak
flatpak run com.aldeastudio.Glyphie

From source: Rust 1.93 or newer is now required.

git clone https://github.com/lkbddh/glyphie.git && cd glyphie
just build-release && sudo just install

Bind a shortcut under Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command glyphie, or flatpak run com.aldeastudio.Glyphie for the Flatpak. Super + ; works well, because COSMIC already uses Super + . for Zoom In.
