DevXH v1.0.1

Packaging fix release: the v1.0.1 server binary now runs on any modern
Ubuntu LTS out of the box — 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 — instead of only the
distro it was built on.

What changed vs v1.0.0

The v1.0.0 binary was dynamically linked against every dependency of its
build host (Ubuntu 24.04), so on other distros it failed at startup:

  • libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file (when SDL_image
    was not installed)
  • libfmt.so.9: cannot open shared object file (Ubuntu 26.04 only ships
    libfmt10; the v1.0.0 binary required the older libfmt9 ABI, which cannot
    be installed from 26.04 repositories at all)

v1.0.1 fixes the root cause instead of papering over it:

  • libfmt (10.0.0), libsodium, and bzip2 are statically bundled from the
    upstream-vendored sources in 3rdParty/, using the same
    DEVILUTIONX_SYSTEM_*=OFF flag set the upstream DevilutionX release
    workflow uses (their stated reason: these libraries' soversions churn
    across distro releases).
  • libstdc++ is statically linked (no libstdc++6 version constraint).
  • A small glibc compat shim (Source/glibc_compat.c, new in this release)
    backports the C23 strtol redirects and arc4random so the binary keeps
    its glibc 2.35 floor (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS) even when built on a 24.04 or
    26.04 host. v1.0.0's real floor was silently glibc 2.38.
  • The only remaining runtime libraries are SDL2, SDL2_image, and zlib —
    all with stable sonames, documented in the First Gate guide and
    INSTALL.txt: sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0 libsdl2-image-2.0-0 zlib1g

No gameplay, networking, or CLI changes — server behavior is identical to
v1.0.0. Existing gates keep running; upgrading is optional but recommended
so future Ubuntu upgrades can't break your gate.

Verified compatibility

  • Built and smoke-tested on Ubuntu 24.04 (WSL), glibc 2.39 host
  • Binary requires glibc >= 2.35, links only libz / libSDL2_image /
    libSDL2 (+ libc/libm) — confirmed via readelf
  • Tested against Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS ("Resolute") expectations: no libfmt
    dependency exists anymore; libsdl2-2.0-0 and libsdl2-image-2.0-0
    are present in the 26.04 repositories
