What Felines Is

Felines is an educational platform that maps stray cat colonies and converts everyday citizens into guardians — without requiring them to love cats first.

"Every world domination plan has the same problem: the already-convinced don't need convincing. We built a platform for everyone else."

The Problem

Scale: An estimated 10 million stray cats live on Brazil's streets (WHO/WSPA), out of roughly 480 million worldwide (World Animal Foundation, 2021). Only a fraction — roughly 7,400 of Brazil's 10 million — are in formal shelters (Instituto Pet Brasil / Índice de Abandono Animal).

The gap: Every existing platform was built for people who already care for cats. Nobody built a bridge for the conflicted neighbor, the curious passerby, or the averse citizen.

The root cause: Misinformation drives conflict, and conflict drives mistreatment. ~40% of Brazilians have had a conflict with a neighbor involving animals (IBGE). 71% of people who abuse animals also commit crimes against humans (Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, citing "The Link").

The solution: Felines speaks to the unconvinced. Conversion happens through logic, not emotion.

Positioning

Primary user: the everyday citizen — not the existing cat person.

Core differentiator: the only product that speaks to someone who wants the cats gone, and converts them into an ally instead.

Hackathon theme connection: "world domination" read as conquering those who aren't allies yet — see the full reasoning in the README.

Value Proposition

Felines is an educational platform built for people who aren't "cat people" — at least, not yet. We help everyday citizens understand what's happening with stray cats in their neighborhood and turn that understanding into real action. Anyone can become an ally to street cats, one small step at a time.

Competitor Benchmark

Product Audience Gap identified
CatColony.org Established caretakers/NGOs No entry point for regular citizens, no education, English only
Meow Metrics Municipal guardians European focus, no on-ramp for non-cat-people, top-down not bottom-up
Whisker Tracker Caretakers/photographers Cat ID only, no community, no education
The Stray App Lost pets Not colony-focused, no education
Alley Cat Allies Activists Excellent educational content, but an NGO, not an interactive digital product
Municipal platforms Partner associations Restricted access, no general public

Conclusion: every competitor speaks to people who already care. Felines speaks to everyone else — and is the only one combining educational content, a collaborative map, emergency support, and full PT/EN bilingual support for the Brazilian context.
