Glovebox v0.8.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Oct 23:34

What's new

  • Keeps every drive until you're home. Glovebox now keeps each minute of driving on its own, skips the time the car sits parked, and holds it until it's backed up. A day parked at work on Sentry no longer pushes the morning drive out.
  • Settings → Storage. A bar shows what's on the card: the car's recordings, Sentry and saved clips, kept drives and free space. A slider picks how many hours of driving to keep, measured from your own car.
  • Better default split. New cards give the car half the space, 32 to 64 GB, and keep the rest for drives.
  • Snapshots every 15 minutes instead of every hour.
  • Cleaner web app. Shorter text, details behind ? tips, a compact Car page once paired.
  • Smoother playback from one minute to the next: no black frame, and the speed and gear don't reset.

Fixes

  • Drives were lost when space ran low: the oldest snapshots went first, even when they held driving not yet backed up.
  • Backups failed with "no such clip file" when a snapshot was cleared mid-upload.
  • Time parked in the garage showed up as a drive, and made the drive home look longer.
  • The accelerator pedal read 100 times too high.
  • After a restart, Settings said it was waiting for a backup that had finished.

Upgrading

Your car's drive keeps its size. To keep more driving, use Settings → Storage: it recreates the car's drive at the new size, once everything is backed up.

Install

New card: flash glovebox-v0.8.0-image.zip with Raspberry Pi Imager (Choose OS > Use custom), put the card in the Pi and plug it into the car's glovebox USB port. After a couple of minutes, join the Glovebox-XXXX Wi-Fi network with your phone: a setup wizard opens for your Wi-Fi, backups, extra drives and car.

Already running Raspberry Pi OS Lite (64-bit)? Install without reflashing, then open http://<the Pi's name>.local:8080 for the same wizard:

curl -fsSL https://github.com/lubaxe/glovebox/releases/download/v0.8.0/install.sh | sudo bash

Glovebox v0.4.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 02:03

What's new

A new look

  • The web app has a new slate-and-blue design and a new logo, an open box, in both the light and dark themes.
  • The Car page has a new picture of where to lay the key card when pairing: on the wireless charging pad beneath the touchscreen.
  • On a fresh card, the setup wizard opens with a new welcome banner.
  • The backup chip at the top of the page (tap it to look for new clips now) also works from the keyboard.

Fixes

  • Leftover .partial files on the NAS. If the car cut the power mid-upload, the half-written temporary file stayed on the NAS for good. Glovebox now records each temporary file before uploading and deletes any leftovers on the next backup run. If the NAS still has the file locked, it tries again on later runs. This covers SMB and NFS. Leftovers from earlier versions aren't recorded, so delete any *.partial files on the share by hand once.

Updating

From 0.4.0: open Settings and press Install v0.4.1.

Glovebox v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Oct 19:51

What's new

Updates from the web app

  • Settings now shows the version the Pi runs and checks GitHub for a newer release. When there is one, it shows what's new and an Install button. The sidebar says so too.
  • Install downloads the new version, checks it against SHA256SUMS, makes sure it runs on the board, swaps it in and restarts Glovebox. It takes a minute or two.
  • The car's drive stays connected the whole time, so the car keeps recording. If the car is paired for keep-awake, Glovebox keeps it awake until the update is done, so the Pi can't lose power partway.
  • It works on any board running Glovebox from the image or install.sh, 64-bit or 32-bit ARM. The previous version is kept as /usr/local/bin/glovebox.old.

Settings

  • The Setup page is now Settings, with a gear icon. Old #/setup links still work.

Upgrading from 0.3.0

0.3.0 doesn't have the update button yet, so this one upgrade is done by hand. After this, updates come from Settings.

  • Glovebox image on a Pi Zero 2 W: download glovebox-linux-arm64 from this release on your computer, then copy it to the Pi and install it (use your Pi's address and login):

    scp glovebox-linux-arm64 glovebox@glovebox.local:/tmp/glovebox
    ssh glovebox@glovebox.local 'sudo install -m 755 /tmp/glovebox /usr/local/bin/glovebox && sudo systemctl restart glovebox'
  • Installed with install.sh: run the install command below again. Your settings and recordings are kept.

Install

New card: flash glovebox-v0.4.0-image.zip with Raspberry Pi Imager (Choose OS > Use custom), put the card in the Pi and plug it into the car's glovebox USB port. After a couple of minutes, join the Glovebox-XXXX Wi-Fi network with your phone: a setup wizard opens for your Wi-Fi, backups, extra drives and car.

Glovebox v0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Oct 18:41

What's new

Set up from your phone

  • No more editing glovebox.toml. A fresh card starts an open Glovebox-XXXX Wi-Fi network. Join it with your phone and a setup wizard opens by itself, with steps for your home Wi-Fi, backups, extra drives and car. The setup network turns off once the Pi is set up.
  • glovebox.local: reach the web app by name on your home network.
  • Change your setup any time: run Guided setup again from the Setup page and open only the steps you want to change. When the Pi is already on your Wi-Fi, this doesn't go through the setup network.
  • Start setup over: put an empty glovebox-setup file on the card's boot partition and the setup network comes back.
  • glovebox.toml on the boot partition still works for anyone who wants to prepare a card ahead of time.

More places to back up to

  • Besides SMB, Glovebox now backs up over NFS, rsync over SSH and rclone. rclone covers cloud storage such as Google Drive, S3, Backblaze B2 and Dropbox.
  • Test connection checks each step (the server, sign-in, the folder and write access) and says which one failed.
  • For rsync over SSH, the Setup page shows the Pi's public key to add to the server. You can upload an rclone.conf from the browser.

Extra USB drives

  • Optional Music, LightShow and Boombox drives, each kept in sync from a folder on your backup target. They're off until you give them a size.
  • A new version is checked first and then swapped in, so the car never sees a half-copied drive.

Install on other boards

  • install.sh now checks the board, OS, kernel modules, Wi-Fi and free space before installing. It runs on more Raspberry Pi models, including 32-bit ones, and on other boards with a USB device port, on a best-effort basis. GLOVEBOX_CHECK_ONLY=1 runs only the checks.
  • The prebuilt image is still for the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.

Fixes

  • Wi-Fi status shows the network's name rather than its connection name.
  • Changing the backup target starts the archive state over instead of keeping the old target's progress.
  • Restarting the service no longer unmounts snapshots that are in use.
  • Turning off an extra drive also deletes its disk image.
  • While a new version is swapped in, an extra drive stays ejected for long enough that the car and computers notice the change.

Upgrading from 0.2.0

Your existing glovebox.toml keeps working: the old flat SMB settings are still read. Save once from the Setup page to move to the new layout.

Install

New card: flash glovebox-v0.3.0-image.zip with Raspberry Pi Imager (Choose OS > Use custom), put the card in the Pi and plug it into the car's glovebox USB port.
