First public version of the English translation of Densetsu no Ogre Battle Gaiden: Zenobia no Ouji
(Neo Geo Pocket Color).

What's translated

  • All story dialogue, town conversations and the ending.
  • Menus, system messages, prompts and the tutorial.
  • Items, item descriptions, classes, unit names, tarot cards, help texts, town names.
  • Graphics text: chapter and area title cards, the opening prologue, menu labels, battle labels, the title-screen
    prompt.
  • Name entry opens on a page of English letters (upper and lower case, digits, punctuation).

Tested

  • Played through chapter 4 on Beetle NeoPop (RetroArch, Android handheld) and Mednafen.
  • Everything after chapter 4 is translated but not yet checked in game: expect some text that runs past a box
edge, awkward line breaks or the odd untranslated line.
  • Link (versus) mode is translated but untested.

Known limitations

  • Some screens only have room for short names: the ITEM window and shop use names up to 10 letters
(CurePotion), the status screen up to 8 (BlkKgSwd), and the battle tarot list abbreviates a few cards
    (Prstess, HngdMan).
  • Japanese hiragana with ゛ or ゜ (が, ば...) can no longer be displayed; this only matters if you type a Japanese
    name.
  • MAME can freeze in places (an emulator issue, also with the Japanese game). Use Mednafen or RetroArch's
    Beetle NeoPop core.

How to apply

You need your own copy of the original Japanese ROM
(Densetsu no Ogre Battle Gaiden - Zenobia no Ouji (Japan).ngc, md5 26d0557d8a465aa8f430d5e4d94c679a).

  • With the IPS: apply the IPS to the ROM with any IPS patcher.
  • From this repository: ./build ROM then ./patch ROM (see the README).

Reporting problems

Please include a screenshot and, if you can, a save state from just before the problem, plus the chapter you're
in.
