🚀 Operon v0.0.1-stable: Desktop GUI & VS Code Extension

We are thrilled to announce the first stable release of Operon, an intelligent, high-performance local AI agent environment built in Rust.

This release delivers production-ready support across the Operon Desktop GUI, the new VS Code Extension, and the core operon-rs backend runtime.

Experience the full power of Operon directly within Visual Studio Code, powered by an ultra-fast, native JSON-RPC 2.0 stdio bridge (operon-vscode-bridge.exe):

  • Project-Scoped Sessions: Automatically anchors sessions and tool operations to your currently open IDE workspace folder.
  • Interactive WorkGroup Timeline: Real-time visualization of tool calls, inputs, and stdout outputs with 60fps streaming animations.
  • Human-in-the-Loop Interactivity: Dynamic tool authorization cards and embedded multiple-choice clarification question dialogs.
  • Adaptive Responsive Layout: Smart collapsible toolbar chips that smoothly adjust when working in narrow sidebar widths.
  • Native IDE Notifications: Integrated VS Code desktop toast alerts for pending permission requests and turn completions.

A modern desktop application built with Tauri v2:

  • 1-Click Auto-Updates: Automatic background release detection against GitHub Releases with a 1-click "Update Ready — Relaunch" badge in the sidebar.
  • Customizable Appearance & Typography: Glassmorphism styling, live thinking orb speed controls, syntax-highlighted code block themes, and font selection.
  • Multi-Channel Integrations: Built-in background daemon manager for WhatsApp and Telegram bridges with QR/pairing code authentication.
  • Native Windows Desktop Integration: Configurable Windows AppUserModelID notifications and system tray support.

  • Multi-Provider LLM Architecture: Seamless support for OpenAI, Anthropic, NVIDIA NIM, and custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints with dynamic reasoning effort selectors.
  • Hardened Tool Suites: High-safety filesystem tools (read, write, edit, ls, grep, delete) with strict absolute path validation, secure shell execution, web search & fetch, and interactive ask tools.
  • Global Persistent Memory Subsystem: Embedded SQLite memory store (operon-tools-memory-store) enabling cross-session retrieval and semantic memory recall.

📦 Installation & Getting Started

Installing the VS Code Extension

  1. Download operon-vscode-0.1.0.vsix from the Assets section below.
  2. Open VS Code, navigate to the Extensions view (Ctrl+Shift+X / Cmd+Shift+X).
  3. Click the ... menu in the top-right corner of the Extensions panel and select "Install from VSIX...".
  4. Choose the downloaded operon-vscode-0.0.1.vsix file.
  5. Open any project folder and click the Operon icon in the Activity Bar to start chatting!

Running the Desktop GUI

  1. Download the Windows installer (operon-gui-setup.exe) or portable executable from the Assets below.
  2. Launch the application and configure your API keys under Settings (Ctrl+,) → Models.
